MSc (Geoinformatics)
(Established under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 vide Notification No. F.9-19/95-U-3 dated 5 October 1999 of the Government of India)
Note from the ChancellorThe TERI University is a unique institution of higher learning that benefits from the enormous range of objective-oriented research carried out by TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute). The challenge of improving the environment, both at local and the global levels, is an issue that is increasingly engaging the attention of corporate organizations in India and abroad and, of course, governments and civil society in general. The TERI Universitys MSc programmes are designed specifically to help organizations, particularly in the corporate sector, meet challenges that are emerging throughout the world. These programmes are also of great value to the scientific community, policy-makers, as well as NGOs and representatives of civil society. Given the practical orientation of all the work that TERI carries out, the programmes are necessarily interdisciplinary in nature and focus on problem solving. Students who graduate would, therefore, be uniquely qualified to undertake major initiatives in the efficient management of natural resources and the prevention of environmental pollution. The programmes equip students to solve problems in these fields at source rather than through end-of-pipe interventions. This saves costs and results in longer-term benefits for the organization concerned and the society in general.

Established in 1998 and recognized as a Deemed University in 1999 by the University Grants Commission, the TERI University has evolved as a reputed research university and attracts some of the finest minds to explore new ideas and master the proven ones. The genesis of the TERI University is rooted in the comprehensive research, consultancy and outreach
activities of TERI, a not-for-profit, independent research institute recognized globally for its contribution to scientific and policy research in the realms of energy, environment and sustainable development.
The University's special relationship with TERI has propelled and influenced the evolution of its academic units. This relationship is enshrined in an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) between the University and TERI, wherein the two have agreed on collaborative research and programmes; joint studies; and mutual support for seminars, symposia and conferences. TERI also provided an initial corpus to financially support the University's establishment and continues to support several components of the University's capital and revenue expenses. Additionally, TERI's existing infrastructure - state-of-the-art laboratories, well-equipped field stations and highly professional manpower - is available for the TERI University to utilize and gain from it.
With this consolidated base, in February 2002, the TERI University also entered into a MoU with the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies of Yale University. In 2004 the TERI University signed MoUs with Nottingham University, UK; in 2006 with the University of Saskatchewan, Canada; in 2008 with the University of Iceland, with North Carolina State University and with Friei University, Germany and in 2011 Asian Institute of Technology Thailand. These interinstitutional MoUs are aimed at facilitating mutually beneficial exchange of students, faculty, knowledge, resources and ideas.
The University receives no regular grants or aid from any source. In 2002, the Ford Foundation gave an endowment to the University for setting up the Department of Natural Resources. In 2004, National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) gave a grant for setting up the NTPC Chair in the Department of Policy Studies. In the same year, the Department of Personnel Training, GoI, entered into collaboration with the University for running a master's programme for mid-career civil servants. In 2005, National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) gave a grant for setting up the NHPC chair in the Department of Policy Studies.

MissionThe TERI University aspires to contribute globally by serving society as a seat of advanced learning, and promote learning through teaching and creating and sharing knowledge. The University commits itself to academic excellence and an environment, which would encourage personal and intellectual growth.
The University provides world-class facilities and resources to its students and faculty so as to usher in innovative and multi-disciplinary research.
About the University logoThe emblem signifies what TERI University stands for: looking for glory through reaching new horizons. The figure of a running student symbolizes his quest for knowledge with his arm reaching out towards the rising sun. The rising sun stands for hopes, aspirations, enlightenment, and the ultimate source of all life and knowledge on earth. All of this is synchronous with new and innovative research in an institution of higher education. The dark blue colour signifies seriousness and tranquility, while the bright orange and red stand for the enthusiasm and the fire withinqualities that student of TERI University would imbibe.
Along with the lofty ideals, which the University stands for, the use of capital letters has been avoided in the emblem to signify modesty and humility, which were the hallmarks of ancient Indian sages and rishis.
InfrastructureThe University has, in September 2008, moved to its new campus Vasant Kunj. The campus, which has been constructed to include modern pedagogical amenities, showcases green building design.
TERI University harnesses the best of modern technology to satisfy the intellectual curiosity of its students and faculty. Well-equipped Geoinformatics (Remote Sensing, GIS and GPS), Biotechnology, Environmental Chemistry, Seed Technology and Ecology laboratories, replete with advanced equipment and facilities, aid and stimulate research. For courses such as Geoinformatics, Biodiversity and Soil Conservation, field surveys and experiments are carried out. Enabled by information technology tools, the University is fully networked and has an online presence.
Come state-of-the-art equipments available include high-end computers (dual processor), scanners, digitizers, printers, plotters, digital image processing software like Erdas Imagine 9.3/8.7/2010, LPS 9.3, GIS software like ArcGIS 9.3/2010 Workstation, GMS 6.0, WEAP etc., are some of the advanced support systems available.
