The early 19th century witnessed a veritable flourishing of Music and dance in the Royal courts of the Nawabs, homes of noblemen and salons of the courtesans in Northern India. Two arts in particular rose to the forefront..

Thumri and Kathak representing a rich confluence of Hindu and Muslim culture. This presentation traces the hand in hand journey of these two inseparable sister arts through time..

Dhanashree Pandit Rai-Dhanashree is one of the foremost vocalists of Indian Music today and has established herself as one of the leading exponents of the Thumri gayaki. She has trained in Khayal under the stalwart of the Kirana Gharana Pt. Firoz Dastur and further specialized in THUMRI under the guidance of the thumri legend Shobha Gurtu. She has an Masters degree in Music from the Bombay University. Dhanashree is aspiring to give THUMRI its rightful place on the concert stage since it faces the risk of extinction with the dominance of KHAYAL.. She has performed in all the leading music Institutions in Mumbai and all over India and has toured the U.S. several times for concerts and music workshops. She has released several thumri albums entitled “Saawan ki thumri”, Barsat Rang and Kanha Re under the banner of TIMES MUSIC and Dreams Entertainment and her latest release is a World Music album “Always Here” released by Amoka Records.

Aditi Bhagwat-began rigorous training in the Jaipur style of “Kathak” dance under Padmashri Dr.Roshan Kumari with strict discipline and ethics. She has also received the able guidance of Kathak exponent Nandita Puri. She is an ‘A’ graded artist of the Doordarshan Kendra and impanelled with the Indian Council of Cultural Relations. She has received the title of “Nalanda Nritya Nipun” from the Nalanda Dance and Research Academy, Mumbai. Her first collaborative venture was with Jazz maestro Louiz Banks, ace percussionist Sivamani and music composer Merlin D’souza from India. She performed at the Budapest Spring Festival for the Indo-Gypsy Jazz project with pianist Bela Szakcsi Lakatos in Hungary, Kathak and Electronic music collaboration with the band Kartik and Gotam in France and for The Issue Project with New York based pianist Rod Williams. She has gracefully blend the stylized gestures of Kathak and the sophisticated rhythm different Taals with instruments from different disciplines.

Thumri and Kathak ... two great art forms that arose hand in hand in the court of Wajid Ali Shah

of Awadh in the early 19th century redefining the concept of “Shringar and “Nazakat”, took the theme of love and romance to dizzying heights..yet all within the limits of Classical Art.

Dhanashree and Aditi will trace the journey of these two sister arts across time through solo and jugalbandi sequences covering a wide spectrum of their intertwined history : traditional compositions of Wajid Ali Shah himself and masters like Bindadin Maharaj from his court ; themes like Panghat (village maidens at river bank), Sawan (monsoon and rains), Hori (festival os colors), Baramasa (cycle of seasons), the Nayikas and rasas (essence); Bhaav (emotions) in Thumri & Kathak and most importantly - their journey from the Kotha (salons of the courtesans) to the concert stage.

The concept features tabla, sarangi and harmonium as accompanying instruments.
