National March For Life - Washington, D.C. - submitted by Molly Milana -

On Tuesday, January 19, 100 Pius X students boarded busses with 135 other high school students from the Lincoln Diocese for the annual National March for Life in Washington, D.C. The pilgrimage included students from Bishop Neumann, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Cecilia’s, St. Thomas Aquinas, Sacred Heart, and other public high schools throughout the diocese as well as 12 priests and over 25 chaperones from all over the diocese.

Upon arrival to Washington, D.C., the pilgrims quickly settled into hotel rooms and ended the evening with Mass before getting some much needed sleep. Thursday morning, there was a trip to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Concep-tion for touring and Mass with Bishop Conley. Afterwards, stu-dents split into groups for lunch and various tours of the city.

Friday morning was an early one. Students joined thousands of others for the Youth Rally and Mass for Life at the Verizon Cen-ter. Immediately following the Mass, young people from across the country flooded the streets to join thousands of others, young and old, for the 43rd annual National March for Life Rally and walk to the Supreme Court building. Despite the cold, the falling snowflakes gave the March a very peaceful and humbling envi-ronment as pro-life advocates united as one to be a voice for the voiceless.

Ultimately, it was these snowflakes that led to the group’s early departure from Washington, D.C. Immediately following the March, the five busses were loaded and heading home in hopes of missing the impending snow storm. This meant the group would miss a night tour of the National Monuments and a visit to Mount St. Mary’s University where some of the Lincoln sem-inarians currently study.

The drive back to Lincoln was an adventurous but joyous and grace-filled one. An accident on the Pennsylvania turnpike held up two busses for eight hours and three others for almost 19 hours! This unexpected delay was frustrating and boring at times but filled with many blessings. Students bonded on warm bus-ses, sharing snacks and water, playing games, watching movies, and praying with one another. The sacrifices made on the long wait were offered for the unborn and all expecting mothers. Many others made sacrifices to bring stranded busses and cars gas, water, snacks, and even pizza.

… continued When the accident was finally cleared, all busses were back on the road. All were home safe and sound by Sunday early after-noon; glad for a shower and a bed. While this pilgrimage brought many unexpected circumstances and sacrifices, it was one of the most inspirational and life-changing adventures. Stu-dents and chaperones agreed that the struggle was well worth it and many admitted they would do it all over again. As we go forward, we will continue to pray, make sacrifices, and hope for an end to abortion and the culture of death. —————————————————————————— Nebraska Walk For Life - Saturday, January 30 - submitted by Molly Milana -

Pius X students, staff, priests, and parents joined over 5,000 Ne-braska pro-life supporters at the state capitol on Saturday, Janu-ary 30, for the Nebraska Walk for Life. Senators Deb Fischer, Pete Ricketts, Lt. Governor Mike Foley, and Congressman Jeff Fortenberry were just a few of the morning’s speakers.

After the singing of the National Anthem and the releasing of thousands of pink and blue balloons at the State Capitol, walkers made their way to the UNL Student Union to hear from Sue Thayer, the former director of Planned Parenthood in Storm Lake, Iowa. Sue shared her miraculous and inspiring conversion story of leaving Planned Parenthood after 18 years and now di-recting a pregnancy resource center.

Supporters walked, prayed, and shamelessly carried signs to give a voice to the voiceless. —————————————————————————— March For Life - Diocese of Lincoln Students

Theology IV Field Trip - submitted by Sister Maria -

On Wednesday, January 20, half of Sr. Maria’s Theology IV students participated in a field trip. The other half went on the field trip the following Wednesday, January 27. Along with be-ing a field trip, it was also a pilgrimage. As a culminating activi-ty for the class on vocations, the theology students visited the Marian Sisters’ Motherhouse, Villa Marie School, St. Gregory The Great Seminary, and the Carmelite Sisters in Agnew, Ne-braska. The goal was to provide a little something for the mind, heart, soul, and body of those students who availed themselves of this rare opportunity.

The young sisters who are in religious formation at the Marian Sisters gave a tour of the newly renovated chapel and other parts of the house. They then presented the history and charism of the Marian Sisters along with instruction on the various stages of religious life and the significance of the evangelical councils of chastity, poverty, and obedience. They also shared their vocation stories with the students. The students enjoyed some treats.

Afterwards, they visited the Villa Marie School for children with special needs. This school is run and staffed by the Marian Sis-ters. The principal, Sr. Jeanette Rerucha, shared information and the history of Villa Marie School and then the students of Villa Marie conducted tours of the school. The Pius X students also enjoyed fresh cookies.

A sincere vote of gratitude to Mr. Michael Messineo is in order for his generosity in providing a substantial discount for lunch at Valentino’s Buffett where the Pius X field trip participants en-joyed a delicious meal.

The next stop was St. Gregory the Great Seminary in Seward. Various seminarians divided the group and conducted tours of the seminary.

The final stop was at the Carmel of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph convent. The Carmelite Sisters were kind enough to speak with our students to answer any of their questions. We then prayed in their beautiful chapel.

The 31st class of National Honor Society (NHS) members was inducted at Pius X on Monday evening, February 15. The convo-cation ceremony honors the top scholars and leaders of the school for their dedication to and exemplification of the four National Honor Society pillars: character, service, leadership, and scholarship.

As the largest student organization at Pius X, more than 300 young adults participate in NHS. “Although all four pillars are important, the main emphasis of the Pius X Chapter is service and leadership,” noted Tom Seib, Pius X Social Studies instruc-tor and NHS sponsor.

Seib made special note of the impressive list of community ser-vice and number of hours completed by NHS members. “Our students volunteered at a large variety of organizations including Matt Talbot Kitchen to Autism Awareness to the Lincoln City Library and the Zoo. They also volunteered at their parishes, at Pius X, City Impact, hospitals, Catholic Social Services, YMCA youth sports, and many more,” said Seib. “In all, our students completed well over 2,000 hours of service in the Lincoln com-munity.”

NHS members also provide outstanding leadership for the Pius X student body. Seib noted that junior and senior NHS members were involved in 26 clubs, 15 sports, and 8 performing groups during the first semester of the school year.

NHS president Anna Stuchlik addressed the crowd of more than 400 students, teachers, administration, parents, and family mem-bers. She stated that the four pillars of NHS “shape not only high-achieving students, but also well-rounded individuals. Character is the key and the most important. You can have good grades, but cheat to get them; lead noble causes and do service for all the wrong reasons.”

Anna further explained that character is the tool that pulls the NHS pillars together. Character is “who you are when no one is looking; your moral and ethical quality and your integrity…and you may not always be aware of how your character is affecting others, which is part of why character is so important.”

Anna also encouraged her fellow students to work on building their own good character. “We must develop our character be-fore it can be shared and impact others.”

After the induction of 203 Pius X juniors and seniors into the National Honor Society, the students and guests enjoyed com-ments from guest speaker Seth Odgaard. A 1993 graduate of

Pius X High School, Seth is the Director of Refugee Resettle-ment in Lincoln for Catholic Social Services. He also creates and markets realistic crucifixes and provides leadership training to companies and non-profit organizations.

“It was a tremendous honor to be invited to come back and ad-dress those young men and women in that capacity,” commented Seth. “I love Pius, have always been grateful for my experience there, and was happy to be able to give back a little.”

He opened his presentation with a leadership exercise that in-cluded the singing of the Pius X fight song by the entire crowd. Seth also shared the tragic story of two refugees with whom he had worked as an example of why leadership is so important. “We live in a broken and shattered world, and you probably hear often that you are the future. Every single one of you in this room has been given gifts. God gave them to you so that you may use them to serve others.”

Seth noted that students may choose from a wide variety of vo-cations, “but whatever gifts you have, it is not about your own success and enjoyment. It is about laying them down at the feet of Christ by putting them to use for the good of others.” He also encouraged students to “ask God to open the doors He wants opened” and to lead you to use scholarship, character, and ser-vice to mend the world around us.

With too many examples of bad leadership in our world, Seth encouraged students to “commit yourself to a study of leadership throughout your life…Become as good of a leader as you can be, which is precisely what the world needs of you.” He also noted that leadership is about relating to others. “Everyone has the capacity to lead and influence others.”

As he concluded, Seth explained that “your gifts are not about you. God does not care what you do as long as you are seeking to use your gifts to rebuild His kingdom.”

National Honor Society is open to all Pius X students in grades 10-12 who maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher and meet the by-law requirements of scholarship, charac-ter, service, and leadership.

The NHS officers for 2015-16 are Anna Stuchlik, president; Henry Jaros, vice president; Independence Talken, secretary; Liam Kruse, treasurer; Reagan Scott, senior representative; Clare Morehouse, junior representative; and Kristie Le, sopho-more representative.

Guest Speaker - College & Career Classes www.facebook.com/restoreallthings

The Pius X College and Career Writing classes were given the opportunity to spend Thursday interacting with Chancellor Douglas Kristensen of the University of Nebraska - Kearney. Mrs. Sullivan and Ms. McBride welcomed Chancellor Kris-tensen's advice on not only the value of attending college, but also the importance of each individual choosing the right college for the right reasons. Kristensen has been in his position at UNK since 2002.

Chancellor Douglas Kristensen from the University of Nebraska - Kearney graciously took time to speak with our College and Career Writing Classes today. Mr. Kristensen shared a connec-tion with Pius X by telling a tale of being classmates with our very own Sister Jacquelyn. Kristensen said that many classmates were chided by their parents years ago to straighten up and pay more attention in school so they could be "like Jacque." Thank you to Mr. Kristensen for taking time for our students.

Five Named Presidential Scholar Candidates www.facebook.com/restoreallthings

Exciting news arrived at Pius X with the announcement that we have a whopping five Presidential Scholar candidates walking our halls. Records indicate that current Stanford student Benja-min Kotopka ('09) is the only Presidential Scholar in Pius X his-tory. Hopefully, that number will grow this year. Congratula-tions to Rachel Duden, Independence Talken, Catherine Krue-ger, David Tines, and Liam Kruse on advancing as candidates for this extremely prestigious award. —————————————————————————— Concussion Training www.facebook.com/restoreallthings

The University of Nebraska is partnering with Pius X and other local schools to promote and educate staff on a competency-based approach to concussion training and support. Mr. Art Maerlender and staff presented to the administrative team Mon-day, February 16. A recap was featured on Channel 8 News To-night at 6 and 10 PM. ——————————————————————————

She was chosen from a pool of nearly 1,200 well-qualified 10th and 11th grade students from across the country with a passion for pursuing a career in science and cancer research,” said Laura Bessen, Vice President, Head of U.S. Medical, Bristol-Myers Squibb. “Our hope is to inspire more students to explore careers that may lead to future innova-tion in cancer care, and know Natalie will represent Pius X High School and the entire Lincoln community as she continues to enhance her knowledge and skills through this one-of-a-kind mentorship program.”

“I am most excited to work alongside my mentor and observe what it takes to be successful in the medical profession,” shared Natalie who recently had a teleconference with her mentor. Na-talie’s mentor will be esteemed scientist Dr. Hussein Tawbi from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. In addi-tion to working with Dr. Tawbi on a multi-week cancer research project, Natalie will also receive a Google Chrome Notebook to enhance her studies and to extend the collaboration with her mentor, a $1,500 stipend for expenses, and the opportunity to continue her mentoring program throughout high school in order to further her academic pursuits.

“Dr. Tawbi and I are hoping to work on our project from early July to late August, and that I will be able to go to MD Anderson in Texas for at least part of the project and to shadow Dr. Taw-bi,” noted Natalie. The remainder of the time, she will be able to work on the research project from a facility in Lincoln and con-tact Dr. Tawbi via Skype.

Natalie learned of this career opportunity and the award in No-vember from Pius X Anatomy teacher, Mrs. Shari Schneider. “I want to thank Mrs. Schneider for telling me about this oppor-tunity,” said Natalie. “I want to pursue a career as a doctor and this program is a once in a lifetime opportunity to expose myself to the medical profession in a hands-on way.”

Natalie joins 99 other students from rural, suburban, and urban communities in 40 states to comprise the first class of Emperor Science Awardees. “Part of the application process was to write an essay concerning the importance of cancer research, as well as answering questions about how this program would impact me if I were to win and why I was interested. I had a lot of fun learning about cancer and cancer research while I formulated my essay.”

The students selected for this opportunity demonstrated aware-ness of emerging developments in cancer treatment including precision medicine, immunotherapy, and epigenetics. They are interested in nanotechnology, basic cellular biology, gene map-ping, toxicology, genetics, DNA splicing, development of bi-omarkers and computational sciences. From laboratory studies and mouse models to exploring marine organisms and their po-tential to provide “natural” cytotoxins for cancer research, stu-dents’ research interests were impressive.

Bristol-Myers Squibb, along with Genentech and Novartis, has provided the funding to award this opportunity to 100 students every year, for three years. Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), a pro-gram of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, and PBS Learn-ing Media, a media-on-demand service designed for K-12 class-rooms, partnered to promote the opportunity to students interest-ed in a career in science research.

Congratulations to Pius X's Kaylee Arndt, Caleb Hansen (left), and Brendan Plummer. Each were recognized as award winners for the 2015-12016 Veterans of Foreign Wars "Voice of Democracy" essay competition. Students were given the theme of "My

Vision for America" and recorded a 3-5 minute essay on an au-dio device. The VFW began sponsoring the Voices of Democra-cy in 1947 and 40,000 student compete nationally each year.

Arndt earned first prize for our area and her essay will be sub-mitted to our district representative for potential advancement to the next stage of the competition. These great writers give us another proud reason to be a Bolt.

Pius Players to Present the Musical “Brigadoon” - submitted by Mary Odgaard -

Pius Players is proud to present the spring musical, Lerner and Loewe's classic "Brigadoon". "Brigadoon" tells the story of two world weary 1940's Americans finding themselves lost in the Highlands of Scotland. When they accidentally stumble upon an eighteenth century Scottish village, the Americans discover it is a magically preserved town that appears out of the Scottish mist only once every 100 years. Brigadoon is a beautiful place where life is simpler, easier, and untouched by the worries and negative influences of the modern world. The hero of the story, Tommy Albright (Thomas Fulton) falls for the lovely villager Fiona MacLaren (Emma Finder), and must decide whether to stay in Brigadoon forever, or return to his American life in New York City.

Brigadoon is truly a story of the miracle of love and heroic sacri-fice for the good of others. With a cast of 47 and a crew of 30, students and directors are hard at work to do justice to this beau-tiful story and even more lushly beautiful music.

Show times are Thursday-Saturday, March 17-19, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, March 20, at 2 p.m. Tickets can be reserved by calling the school office at 402-488-0931 beginning Monday, March 7. —————————————————————————— Mr. Todd Krier Featured in Harmonizer Magazine Visit https://issuu.com/theharmonizer [January/February 2016]

Science Bowl Club Competes at Eastern Nebraska High School Science Bowl at Wayne State College - submitted by Mikala Bradley -

Pius X’s Science Bowl Club team members (pictured) senior Nina Bui, junior Lisa Vu, junior Jolie Hoang, senior Tracy Ngu-yen, and junior Will Twehous represented Pius X in the Eastern Nebraska High School Science Bowl competition hosted by Wayne State College on Saturday, February 13. Pius X Science Bowl Club Sponsor and Chemistry Teacher Mikala Bradley ac-companied the team (pictured far right).

The Science Bowl is a fun, fast-paced academic competition that tests students' knowledge in Science and Math. Teams went head to head using each other’s strengths to answer questions in dif-ferent subject areas such as Anatomy & Physiology, Biology, Chemistry, Energy, Environmental Science, Math, and Physics.

A total of 27 teams from the eastern third of Nebraska joined the competition with some schools represented by more than one team. Schools at the competition included:

Columbus Gretna Elkhorn (4th Place) Elkhorn South Elkhorn Valley Elmwood-Murdock Humphrey Lincoln East Lincoln Pius X Norfolk Oakland Craig Omaha Central (3rd Place) Omaha Creighton Prep (1st Place) Omaha Duchesne Omaha North (2nd Place) Omaha Skutt Catholic Pender Shelby-Rising City

The first part of the competition involved a 4 division round robin competition. The top 4 teams from each division advanced to the second double elimination competition to determine the overall winning school. Although Pius’ students answered many questions and earned competitive scores, they were eliminated in the first round by teams such as Omaha North and Elkhorn who went on to place in the overall top 4 teams. In the consolation bracket, Pius X secured 3rd Place. The overall winner, Omaha Creighton Prep, earned an expense-paid trip provided by The U.S. Department of Energy to the National High School Science Bowl competition in Chevy Chase, Maryland, where they will represent Nebraska.

Pius X Science Bowl Club Sponsor and Chemistry teacher Mikala Bradley had this to say about the Pius X team: “I am very proud of the how the team competed throughout the day. They encouraged each other, challenged each other, and showed great sportsmanship throughout the day. Each student showed their strengths and I believe they learned a lot for it being their first time. We are all anxious to practice, build up the club, and return to the competition to represent our school again next year!”

Pius X Students to Learn about Farm to Table - submitted by Deb Hoge -

Pius X High School is working to bring the farm to the table – the school cafeteria table. And on Tuesday, February 16, stu-dents involved in Landscaping Club learned how they can bring fresh foods to their family dinner table. Gary Fehr of Lincoln Neighbors Urban Farm shared information about his farming operation, how to develop their own family gardens, and about the amount of farm fresh foods available in the Lincoln area.

“Having Mr. Fehr speak to our students is very educational and timely,” noted Georgia Miller, the Landscaping Club sponsor. The students in the club maintain much of the landscaping on the Pius X campus. “We are also working to plant and maintain a herb garden at Pius which will be able to supply our food ser-vice program and our Family and Consumer Science classes.”

“Farm to School is a natural fit for Nebraska’s rich history in agriculture,” shared Pius X Food Service Director Tini Van-Oehlertz who met Fehr at a local conference pairing producers and food service programs. “The phrase “farm to school” refers to schools serving local, farm-fresh foods ranging from fruits and vegetables to eggs and honey to meat.”

After meeting Fehr, who was just beginning his vegetable gar-den, and learning more about the wide-range of farm-fresh prod-ucts available, Van-Oehlertz began purchasing foods from the Nebraska Food Cooperative to incorporate into Pius’ school lunch program. It was a hit with students, faculty, and staff. “Some of the products we have been able to serve in our cafete-ria so far include butter lettuce, spring mix, radishes, acorn squash, corn, berries, homemade granola, jellies, and jams. We have found that the produce has a much longer shelf life as we do not have a middle–man where products sit in a warehouse for a week or more.”

As Van-Oehlertz began working to incorporate more fresh foods into the school lunch menu, she was especially impressed by the sanitation practices followed by producers to bring the food from the farm to the table. “Food safety regulations are stringent, and through this process I have received good insight into pro-curement practices and the sanitation requirements that are a priority for the grower as well as the end facility.” During the winter months, Van-Oehlertz has been excited to get products grown hydroponically and in green houses. “Each time the deliv-ery comes, it is like Christmas. The products are so beautiful, clean, and delicious.”

The Pius X Landscaping Club members maintain much of the landscap-ing on the Pius X campus including the school’s center courtyard which has been featured in Lincoln’s Garden Tour. They will also be planting a garden that will produce herbs for the school lunch program and for use in Family and Consumer Science classes. *courtesy Pius X Foundation *

—————————————————————————– Join us for the 31st annual BOLT benefit dinner on Saturday, April 23. BOLT is an annual fundraiser for Pius X that consists of a gourmet dinner, live auction, silent auction, and lottery with cash prizes totaling $15,000. The evening begins at 5 p.m. with Mass in the Pius X chapel. At 6 p.m., a silent auction and social hour are held in the Pius X gym with dinner at 7:30 p.m. The live auction and lottery drawing follow from 8:30-10:30 p.m. Valet parking is available. Seating is limited so book your reser-vation early.

BOLT has become larger and more successful each year, providing over 4.5 million dollars of improvements over the past 30 years. One-third of the proceeds fund the Booster Club’s special projects while two-thirds of the proceeds finance im-provements to the physical facility. To continue, it takes a com-mitment from all of us.

Lottery Tickets: Each ticket costs $100 for a chance to win $1000, $1500, $2500, or the Grand Prize of $10,000. Winners do not need to be present at the event. Tickets may be pur-chased from students or Deb Schulte at (402) 488-0931.

Students: The top three student ticket sellers will win cash prizes of $300, $200, or $100. The individual who sells the grand prize winning ticket receives $100 as well. In addition, there are prizes for the entire student body who reaches the following levels: 100 tickets = sweatpant/t-shirt dress-up day, 150 tickets = free cookie, 250 tickets = an administrator sleeps on the roof, and 500 tickets = Raising Canes lunch.

Auction Items: Online bidding begins Monday, March 14.

Mobile Bidding: Register your mobile phone early at www.piusx.net (click on the BOLT icon under Quick Links). For those not using a mobile phone for bidding, there will be tablet/computer bidding stations throughout the event with volunteers ready to help.

Preview: All are invited Friday, April 22, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Join us for a casual evening and hors d’oeuvres to pre-view our beautiful gift displays and dining area, have an op-portunity to place bids on auction items, and thank our many wonderful volunteers.

Mobile Bidding

Mobile Bidding is back at BOLT 2016. Mobile or text bidding* allows for a completely paperless bidding system. Auction bidding sheets will no longer be on the display tables, eliminating overcrowding around the auction items. Mobile Bidding will make our event run more efficiently from registration to check out!

* Standard text messaging & data rates may apply.

Can’t attend BOLT this year? Anyone can bid on the silent auction. The auction will be open for submit-ting bids one week before BOLT. You must register, though, so go to the BOLT Mobile Bidding registration page. Your instructions on how to start are the same as noted in “Before you arrive” (below). So, if you can’t attend BOLT, you can still donate or bid on items. All items must be picked up Sunday following BOLT, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., unless you make arrangements beforehand.

Before you arrive: Register your mobile phone online at www.piusx.net. Click on the BOLT icon under Quick Links, then go to the registration page. Be sure to fill out the form completely. All BOLT attendees must register their mobile phones online before they arrive in order to bid on items. You may go direct-ly to the Qtego site at qtego.net/qlink/bolt2016.

Registering early will allow you to receive special announcements and updates about the silent auction.

The night of BOLT: Simply bring your cell phone fully charged and you are ready to win some amazing items! Mobile bidding will allow you to bid electronically on all the silent auction items. You can easily track your desired items by following your activity from your mobile device, or by using our tablets or the computer bidding stations that will be available throughout the evening without having to return to the item’s table.

Guests without phones: If you do not have a cell phone or do not wish to use your personal phone, no wor-ries. We will have tablets/computer bidding stations throughout the event location. And, we will have volun-teers ready to help you!

Food Service

Pound Down Club New Year’s Resolutions come and go. The Food Service staff decided to re-instate their weight loss program after the Christmas holidays. As the school is developing and presenting their wellness plan, we decided to open our weight loss challenge to the faculty and staff at Pius X. One of the employ-ees came up with the great name of “Pound Down” for the group.

The challenge began in January; 26 people are involved in the group. The sign-up cost for each participant is $10; a grand prize will be awarded to the person that has the highest percentage of body weight loss. Food diaries were developed where food intake and exercise are recorded. Frequently, when one uses this kind of tool, one is more aware of what food is con-sumed. Diaries are only a tool and not a requirement.

The weigh-in is every other Thursday. As of February 5, after recording each person’s weight, the total pounds of weight loss was calculated at 74.1 pounds for the group. At the weigh-in, bottles of water and fruit are offered to each participant as well as light recipes, dining out strategies, kinds of fats to eat in one’s diet, and a lot of hugs and encouragement.

A new exercise class called NIA has started for faculty and staff. We have had one session and will meet every Tuesday at 4 p.m. through May 10. The class is a non-impact aerobics that concentrates on dance, joy of movement, and martial arts. It is so fun. You hardly realize that you are exercising. Kelly Hedlund, R.N., is the instructor. She comes to us from Prairie Life Fitness.

An informal walking club has begun as a spin-off of Pound Down. The Pius X Foundation, BOLT, and Alumni staff started the group and walk a fast 15 minute mile through the building. It is a great way to burn off some steam (and calories).

I think this group has been a positive and welcome beginning to the school’s wellness policy integration into the school. ———————————————————–——————————— Farm to School Living in Nebraska provides many opportunities. With so many great farm products available, it makes meal planning and preparation for our school menus nutritious and delicious.

I attended a Farm to School summit a year and a half ago and saw how many great products were available. This conference gave me the opportuni-ty to meet the growers and make a connection. Some of the products we have served in our cafeteria include butter lettuce, spring mix, radishes, acorn squash, frozen corn, fresh berries, granola, jellies, and jams. The pro-duce we have found has a much longer shelf life since there is no middle man where the products sit in a warehouse for a week.

I was tremendously amazed at the sanitation practices that are followed to bring the food from the farm to the table. The food safety regulations are stringent.

I will be attending another conference in March. It is a gathering of food service professionals, students, school administrators, and faculty. The goal of the seminar is to be able to increase students’ knowledge about local and healthy foods, and increase the amount of local foods served to students in our schools.

We have been purchasing food through the Nebraska Coop for the past year. During the winter we have been able to get products grown hydroponically and in green houses. Each time the delivery comes, it is like Christmas; the products are so beautiful, clean, and delicious.

The USDA selected two food service directors from across the state to at-tend Produce University. I was fortunate enough to be selected. I will be going to Florida in April. The course will concentrate on safety and sanita-tion measures connected with produce, suggestions for more ways to use fresh produce in the schools, and visiting farms and looking at their process-es on a first-hand basis. The expectation is that this information be shared with other schools to encourage them to use these great local products. The other food service manager is from Litchfield, Nebraska. She has a small school but works hand-in-hand with a local greenhouse who produces what she needs. Her students are active in the planting, weeding, and harvesting the produce. She has told me that the 1st and 2nd graders help snap beans. As students are more involved in the process, they are far more likely to eat the fresh products.

I will tell you more about my Farm to School adventures after my trip to Florida.
