Way back when…
• Native Americans lived there until French and British explorers found this prime location: Allegheny and Monongahela rivers met to form the Ohio
• Fought for its control in the 1750s
• American independence in 1783 --YAY!
• Fort Pitt continued to grow
“steel city”
• The War of 1812 cut off British supplies, stimulating American manufacturing
• By 1815, Pittsburgh was producing large quantities of iron, brass, tin, and glass products
• By 1840s, Pittsburgh became one of the biggest cities west of the Allegheny mountains
• In 1875, Pittsburgh started manufacturing steel and by 1911, it was producing half of the nation’s steel
• Great Depression, labor unions, New Deal
• 1970- Pittsburgh loses to foreign competition
