One local bridge hascrossed two rivers andtraveled more than 600

    miles.The Historic Steel Truss

Bridge now serves as a pedes-trian and bicycle crossing forthe American River, but in thedecades between the 1930sand 1990s, it served as thebridge over the Klamath Rivernear the Oregon border.

Originally constructed in1893 in Folsom, the trussbridge had outlived its useful-ness when the Rainbow Bridgewas built in 1919 just downriver.

    The truss bridge was closed

and in 1931 it was sold for$250, ripped from the banksof the American River, andmoved to the Klamath River.

There it sat until anotherbridge was constructed nearby, forcing it to be closed once

Folsom History Museum is highlighting thestructures, both past and present, with a specialexhibit that opened earlier this month and runsthrough May 10.

The exhibit, Celebrating Folsoms Bridges, was established as a way of generating excitementfor the citys newest bridge, Folsom LakeCrossing, which will open to traffic on March 28.

Featuring many historic photographs, arti-facts, maps, artist renditions and even a historicFord Model T, the exhibit will detail the historyof seven of the about a dozen bridges that havespanned the American River at various timesduring the areas history.

Karen Mehring, the museums director, saidthat the exhibit is a great way to demonstratethe history and importance of Folsoms bridges.

Bridges have definitely been an importantpart of Folsoms history, said Mehring, whosefather was a bridge engineer for bridgesthroughout the state. I think what is fascinat-ing about bridges is not only are they architec-turally incredible, but they link communities. And as Ive watched this exhibit come together,it is fascinating to see the history and theimportance of how these bridges not only con-nected communities, but were essential in mak-ing them viable communities.

Considering that the idea to create thisexhibit at the museum was conceived due to theconstruction of Folsom Lake Crossing, theexhibit naturally highlights the short history ofthis very new bridge.

The new bridge stands 200 feet tall andspans 970 feet across the American River andwill add a much needed addition to the citysfamily of bridges.

The bridge will alleviate local traffic con-gestion caused by the post-Sept. 11, 2001 clo-sure of Folsom Dam Road, which was a major

thoroughfare for commuterstraveling to and from ElDorado Hills and Placer

    County.Constructed by Kiewit

Pacific through a partnershipbetween the Army Corp ofEngineers, the city of Folsom,HDR, Inc., the CaliforniaDepartment of WaterResources and the SacramentoArea Flood Control Agency,Folsom Lake Crossing featuresa 2.3-mile roadway with fourlanes for automotive traffic

and separate lanes for bicyclesand pedestrians.

The bridge, which was builtto handle 40,000 vehicles perday, also provides a scenicview of the Folsom Dam to theeast and Folsom Prison to thewest.

Lake Natoma Crossing, another one of the exhibitsfeatured bridges, was complet-ed in 1999. The 2,264-foot-

    long, 105-foot-wide span has

been the topic of humorousdiscussions among the muse-ums volunteers and staff.

    Lake Natoma (Crossing)

was always referred to as thenew bridge and weve beenlaughingly talking about howthe Folsom Lake Crossingbridge is now going to becalled the new, new bridge, said Melissa Pedroza, themuseums administrative assis-tant.

The construction of LakeNatoma Crossing, whichbypasses the citys historic dis-

trict, resulted in the unearthingof a variety of Chinese arti-facts from a late 19th centuryChinese community. Theexhibit will showcase many ofthese artifacts.

Another artifact of theexhibit will be one of the fewexisting markers from the his-toric Lincoln Highway, whichwas conceived in 1913 to iden-tify the fastest automobile

routes between New York andSan Francisco. Routed alongthis highway was the city of

    Folsom.The exhibit will also pay

tribute to Drury Butler, thecounty engineer who wasinstrumental in the creation ofFolsoms Rainbow, FigueroaStreet, Orangevale Avenue andCanal bridges all of whichwill be featured in the exhibit.

Widely considered to be themost beautiful and definitelythe most photographed ofthese four bridges is the deco-rative, high-arched RainbowBridge.

Built in 1918 and enhancedwith widened lanes and apedestrian walkway in 1969,this bridge connects the cityshistoric district at Riley Streetwith Greenback Lane andAuburn Folsom Road.

    Constructed three years

prior to the Rainbow Bridge,Orangevale Avenue Bridge, which was once part of theLincoln Highway, formerlyserved as a vital connectionbetween Folsom andOrangevale.

The existence of this bridgetoday is the direct result of a

joint effort by the HeritagePreservation League of Folsomand the Lincoln Highway

Association, which convincedthe city of Folsom to thwart itsplan to have the bridge dis-mantled due to disrepair.

Another one of DrurysFolsom bridges highlighted inthe exhibit is the single lane,1915 Figueroa Street Bridge, which is the citys smallest andnarrowest bridge. This bridgespans the small ravine thatparallels Riley Street.

The last of Drurys Folsombridges is the Canal Bridgethat once had a direct connec-tion to Riley Street, but nowserves as a bike path. Thename of this bridge derivesfrom the fact that it rests abovethe canals in front of the his-toric powerhouse.

The exhibit would certainlynot be complete without the

inclusion of Folsoms oldestexisting bridge, the HistoricTruss Bridge.

Built in 1893 to replace a

suspension bridge that had col-lapsed, the Historic TrussBridge, said Mehring, has aninteresting story behind it.

It has a great little history, because it was there (just northof the Rainbow Bridge), thenit left and then it came backagain, Mehring said. Afteryears of non use, the (bridges)55 steel arches were disman-tled during the 1930s and put

to use near Walker, Calif.,where the Pacific Highwaycrosses the Klamath River. When a larger bridge wasneeded in that location,Folsom was contacted to see ifwe would like it back and thebridge was soon afterwardreturned to Folsom.

Candy Miller, who is one ofthe museums many dedicatedvolunteers, said that it seems

very appropriate for the muse-um to present a bridge exhibit, considering that Folsom ishome to half of the countysbridges along the AmericanRiver.

One of the highlights ofthe story about our bridges isthat the city of Folsom hasfour crossings across theAmerican River and the coun-ty has a total of eight

(American River crossings)with Sunrise, Watt, Howe andthe crossing by Discovery Parkbeing the other ones, Millersaid. To me, thats a fascinat-ing sidelight.

Commenting on the educa-tional aspect, Mehring said theexhibit provides an inexpen-sive way to learn about thecity.

    This exhibit is an opportu-

nity to learn more aboutFolsoms history and how thecitys bridges have enhancedboth the past and present timesin our great community,Mehring said. And with theeconomy the way it is, peoplealso appreciate that we offer afamily-friendly activity formuch less than the cost ofgoing to a movie.

    The FigueroaStreet Bridge was

built in 1916 tocross a brushyravine that hasbeen largelyfilled in and the

water divertedinto culverts.Because it is a

vehicular bridge,it is inspectedevery two yearsby CalTrans andmaintained by

the citys publicworksDepartment. Thebridge is locatedjust off RileyStreet, about oneblock up fromSutter Street.

The Orangevale Avenue Bridge connects Folsom with its neighbor over Gold Creek. Thebridge was constructed in 1915, as shown in this photograph, and once served as partof the historic Lincoln Highway. Sometimes referred to as the Mini Rainbow Bridge, thisstructure served as the prototype for the span that would follow four years later.
