Three steps to… The three step process of life is found in books ranging from “Three Steps to the Universe: From the Sun to Black Holes to the Mystery of Dark Matter “ to “Three Steps to Yes: The Gentle Art of Getting Your Way”. For years public speaking courses have taught the “3 points and a conclusion” method. Three is a good number. It is a biblical number. It is a number that we, in our striving to “get it”, seem to be able to handle. Jesus has a three step process as well. He says, “Come, follow, and I will make you fishers of people”. If the three step books on the market seem to imply that they can make it easy, Jesus does not. Come, follow, be made. Come. Come over to Jesus. Come away from the selfish pur- suits of our hearts and over to the selfless purposes of his. Stop running from and start running toward Christ. Come away from the mainstream and into the flow of the spirit of God. Come, close enough to hear the voice, the ways, the heart of Jesus. Follow. It implies we are going somewhere - motion. It implies that there is direction and that there is a leader. Sometimes it asks us to leave where we are to go where we know not. It asks us to believe that he knows what he is doing and where he is going and that we are intended to go there with him. Be made. “I will make you.” How difficult is this one? We of the self-made man, self-made woman mystique. We of the stand-alone-without-help-thank- you-very-much-mindset. Our Liberator asks for permission to “make us”. Without help what we make of us is so much less than ideal. In the making the Maker remakes us. Come, follow, be made by the one who followed the trail of our brokenness to the cross – the one who came to be made like us that we might be made like him. Three steps to true person- hood. Three steps to discovering Life. Three steps - all of which go against our grain. Simple, yes. Easy, no. Come. Follow. Be made.

Come away from the selfish pur-suits of our hearts and over to the selfless purposes of his. Stop running from and start running toward Christ. Come away from the mainstream and into the flow of the spirit of God. Come, close enough to hear the voice, the ways, the heart of Jesus.

Follow. It implies we are going

somewhere - motion.

We of the stand-alone-without-help-thank-you-very-much-mindset. Our Liberator asks for permission to “make us”. Without help what we make of us is so much less than ideal. In the making the Maker remakes us.

Come, follow, be made by the one who followed the trail of our brokenness to the cross – the one who came to be made like us that we might be made like him. Three steps to true person-hood. Three steps to discovering Life. Three steps - all of which go against our grain. Simple, yes. Easy, no. Come. Follow. Be made.

CAN WE STILL HELP?As we all know, one month ago Haiti was devastated by an Earthquake. Since that day UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) has had a daily presence in offering aide to the people of Haiti. I am very proud to be part of a church that has been part of this recovery program and continues to ask “can we still help?” Yes, we can.

In January, PUMC sent $995 to UMCOR. The 2009 PUMC Vacation Bible School funds have been des-ignated to be sent to Haiti, that amount is $407.52 and will be

mailed at the end of February along with any other funds that are placed in the Offering Plate designated for Haiti. Each and every month, for as long as funds are designated for Haiti, a check will be mailed to UMCOR from Pittsboro United Methodist Church in aide to our brothers and sisters in Haiti.

UMCOR.org reports in the article “UMCOR Relief Efforts in Haiti:

One Month after the Quake” that generous supporters have con-

tributed more than $11 million to UMCOR’s Haiti recovery plan, as well as components for more than 350,000 health kits. The article goes on to say that UMCOR has devel-oped a five-year work plan in part-nership with the United Nations, NGOS and the Methodist Church in Haiti. The UMCOR work plan will occur in three phases of recovery: emergency, recovery, and rehabilita-tion. The people of this country have a long road of recovery in front of them and will need help with every area of life: food, water, sanitation, shelters, to more perma-nent fixtures such as schools, hos-pitals, permanent homes, churches. Every gift that UMCOR receives will be an important step in recov-ery for Haiti.

So in answer to the question that I was asked a couple weeks ago, “can we still help?” “YES”. “For how long?”, for as long as there is a need. Just write UMCOR Advance #418325 in the memo line of your check and place it in the Offering Plate.

Believe this year was amazing! They had new artists and different attrac-tions for different kinds of kids. If you don’t know what Believe is, it’s a two day field trip for any middle school student that wants to go. It’s always a lot of fun. They have sing-ing and praising towards God with the band and a speaker that preach-es to us. They also have this artist that always plays the role of God. He creates these beautiful pieces of art that grab your attention. In years

past, Believe had a stuntman that did amazing tricks, but they twisted it up this year. Instead of the stunt-man they had three skateboarders that would always open up every segment.

Believe is a place where young teen-agers can just be themselves and make new friends. They don’t have to pretend there because Believe is a NO judge zone. I love going out there and meeting new people.

It’s one of my favorite parts about Believe! Sarah H., on the other hand, said that her favorite part of Believe was all the songs, new and old. Believe is just a wonderful experi-ence for everyone! All the kids and all the adult chaperones always end up having a blast.

This being my very last year of going on Believe, I have to say I’m going to miss it. It was always one of my high-lights of the year and now it’s over with. For any new comers, I advise you to always keep an open mind when going on Believe. Anything

can happen, and lots of weird things always end up happening, but it’s always filled with great memories. Don’t be afraid to get out there and talk to people. Getting new friends is always fun especially when you can share something as cool as Believe with them. GO CRAZY! Don’t ever hold back when you are there. If you feel like dancing, then dance! Most importantly, just have fun! Make the best of everything that happens. Don’t ever let anything small ruin your day, and that’s for both Believe and in life.

THE WALK TO EMMAUS – IS IT FOR YOU?Have you considered a Walk to Emmaus? Several members from this church and others around the world have taken this “jour-ney” to a deeper walk with Christ and more fruitful servant hood in the life of the church. It is not the beginning of your spir-itual pilgrimage, but a spiritual renewal weekend; a time apart to hear Christ speaking to you and to experience the love of God in a deeper way moving you to a more intimate relationship with Christ and then living out that relationship in the world in which you live and move.

There are two women’s walks and two men’s walks each year; one in the Spring and one in the Fall. Prayerfully consider if God is calling you to join Him on an Emmaus Walk; and then talk to someone who has been on a Walk. They will be happy to answer your questions!

The 2010 walks are scheduled and accepting applications. (Reservations are required and space is limited.)

Spring Walk:

Men'sWalk#64....................April22-25Women'sWalk#65..............April29-May1

Fall Walk:

Men'sWalk#66...................Oct7-10Women'sWalk#67.............Oct14-17

Members of PUMC that have attended an Emmaus Walk:

Mike & Jill Hostetler, John & Cindy Eaton, Jim & Julie Mardis, Stuart & Christy Williams, Sean & Carmen Daugherty, Cindy Wilson, Tom & Vickie Toussant, Woody & Linda Smith

Children's Church and Music Ministry Children's Church and Music Ministry are pleased to announce they collected $177.90 for Family Promise of Greater Lafayette. Family Promise helps families and indi-viduals in the Lafayette area.

The children also collected $95.25 to be given to Family Health Ministries. FHM is an organization which helps children in Haiti and other impoverished countries.

What great giving from such small hands!

4-Week Easter StudyOn Sunday, March 7th, the Servants Sunday School class will begin a 4-week Easter study. The topics of this study are The Triumphal Entry (3/7), The Last Supper (3/21), The Crucifixion (3/28) and The Ressurection (4/4). This is a down-loaded study so the church office will need to make copies for anyone who is interested in participating. Please contact Cathy Dickson (374-5244 or [email protected]) or the church office for study materials. This group meets in the Fellowship Hall. Cost of the study is $3.
