were originally scheduled to begin play at 4 p.m. ET Friday, March 17, but due to potential inclement weather, the two teams will now play at 2 p.m.

• The rest of the schedule will remain in place, but all game times and dates are subject to change.

• Game two will take place at 1 p.m. ET Saturday, March 18, prior to the series finale on Sunday, March 19 at 12 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT • The Panthers embarked on a nine-day road trip,

beginning with their first ACC showdown of the season against North Carolina. Following the se-ries against UNC, Pitt faced Elon before heading to Greenville, N.C. to face then No. 13/14 JMU and East Carolina.

• Against the Tar Heels, the Panthers were swept, falling 5-1, 6-2 and 8-7 (nine innings).

• Pitt bounced back against Elon, defeating the Phoenix 7-2. A second-career grand slam by sophomore Alexis Solak sparked the Panthers at the plate.

• The Panthers continued their tour of North Carolina as they traveled to Greenville, N.C. to face the Pirates and ranked Dukes. Pitt opened with a 10-hit, 5-2 win over host ECU. The Panthers were not able to muster another victory in that weekend, dropping two games to JMU and another to ECU.

2017 GAME NOTESTHE SERIES • Pitt trails Louisville in the all-time series, 16-2. • The Panthers last win came May 2, 2015, when the

squad defeated the Cards 2-1 at Vartabedian Field in Pittsburgh.

SCOUTING RVLOUISVILLE • Louisville opened the 2017 season with a slow

start, going 6-6 in their first 12 games. Since then, the Cards have won nine of their last 10, posting an overall record of 15-7.

• Louisville will ride a three-game winning streak into its first conference matchup of the season against the Panthers.

• The Cards are currently receiving votes (14) in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll.

• Led by senior Tiarra Sanabria (.429) and redshirt junior Nicole Pufahl (.381), Louisville features eight players with a clip of .300 or better. Pufahl paces the Cards offense with 23 RBIs and 24 hits. Senior Maryssa Becker provides the pop in the Cardinal offense, leading the team with four homers and 38 total bases.

• Becker’s power isn’t used only at the plate, as the senior doubles as Louisville’s ace, posting an 11-4 record with a 1.26 ERA. She has recorded 77 strikeouts in 89.0 innings pitched.

STRENGTH AT THE PLATE • Pitt boasts five players hitting .300 or better:

NFCA/USA Today Coaches Poll (4), however did not get votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll.

SOLAK STRONG • Sophomore Alexis Solak continues her strong

play at the plate for Pitt, hitting .407 on the year with 24 hits and 19 RBIs. She leads the Panthers in batting average and RBIs in addition to slugging percentage (.559) and on base percentage (.449).

• Solak’s clip currently sits eighth overall in the ACC.

• Solak's bat produced her second-career grand slam Wednesday, March 8 against Elon, leading Pitt to a 7-2 win over the Phoenix.

• At the Troy Classic, she hit 10-for-17 with one home run, one double, and five RBIs.

• Solak set a new personal best in hits when she went a perfect 4-for-4 against Troy Feb. 25. She now has five multi-hits games and three multi-RBI games on the season.

PITCHING KNIGHTS OUT • Freshman pitcher Brittany Knight continues to

impress in her first season, improving to 8-3 on the season.

• Knight leads the Panthers' pitching staff with eight wins and 74.1 innings pitched.

• She earned her fifth victory of the season against Southeastern Louisiana, by only allowing three runs and striking out three over five innings pitched.

• Knight started the Panthers’ second meeting against Lipscomb at the Troy Classic, allowing two earned runs over five innings pitched, and three strikeouts en route to a 4-3 revenge victory over the Bisons.

• At the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Knight started the Panthers’ second meeting against Nebraska, allowing two earned runs over six innings pitched, en route to a 6-2 victory over the Cornhuskers.

• In her debut weekend with Pitt, the freshman star pitched lights outs, ending her four-appearance showing with a 0.00 ERA in 16.1 innings pitched and did not allow an earned run. The Windham, Ohio, native also struck out six.

GRAY AT THE PLATE • Sophomore Olivia Gray is a key piece in the

Panthers' lineup. She is currently hitting .313 on the season with 21 hits, nine of which are doubles. She is also slugging .493.

• Gray led Pitt’s undefeated (4-0) weekend at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Tallahassee, Fla., as she scored a team-leading seven times after reaching base safely in 10 of her 14 appearances at the plate.

• The Pittsburgh native was 7-for-11 on the weekend with four doubles and one RBI. She also earned three walks in the game. Gray finished the weekend with a .636 average, 1.000 slugging percentage and a .714 on base percentage.

• The sophomore had three multi-hit games, including both games against Nebraska. In game two against the Huskers she went a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles and scored two of the three times she reached base.

LEADOFF HITTER • Freshman Hannah Edwards has been the leadoff

hitter in the lineup in all but one game so far this season.

SWIPING BASES • Junior Erin Hershman, has tested the arms of

multiple opponent catchers, stealing a perfect seven bases on seven attempts so far this season.

• Freshman Hannah Edwards has swiped eight bases in her debut season to lead the Panthers.

UP NEXT • Following the Louisville series, Pitt will begin a

five-game homestand. The Panthers will open at Vartabedian Field Wednesday, March 22 against non-conference foe Kent State, before welcoming Boston College to Pittsburgh for the first home conference series March 24-26. Pitt will conclude its homestand March 29 with a single game versus in-state rival Penn State.

PANTHERS PICK UP WIN AT ELON • Pitt defeated Elon, 7-2, in its first midweek game

of the season Tuesday, March 7. • With the game knotted 2-2, sophomore Alexis

Solak gave the Panthers their lead after hitting her second career grand slam.

PITT SWEPT BY UNC TO OPEN ACC PLAY • In its opening weekend of ACC play, Pitt was

swept by North Carolina. The Panthers fell it the opening game Friday 5-1, before losing 6-2 Saturday. On Sunday, Pitt was defeated in an extra-inning thriller as the Tar Heels came back from trailing the Panthers 7-1 to win 8-7.

• Pitt had three players tally averages above .400 as freshman Valerie Ortega hit .571, junior Gior-giana Zeremenko hit .500 and sophomore Alexis Solak recorded a hitting percentage of .444.

PERFECTION LEADS TO WEEKLY HONORS • On Sunday, Feb. 26 against Southeastern Louisi-

ana, junior Kayla Harris threw her first perfect game and the second in Pitt program history. Harris retired 21 straight batters, while striking out four. She began the game sitting down the

first four batters she faced, striking out the side in the first inning and the first batter of the second.

• This was the second perfect game in Pitt program history, the first coming last season when sophomore Sarah Dawson threw a perfect five-inning campaign, Feb. 27, 2016. The two games happened almost exactly a year apart from each other.

• For her effort last weekend, Harris was named ACC Pitcher of the Week. In addition to her perfect game, she captured her first save of the season, pitching two innings to secure a 4-3 victory over Lipscomb. In her loss against the Bisons, Harris tossed a complete game, giving up just a single hit through six innings. She also fanned four in the game.

PANTHERS FINISH TROY CLASSIC, 3-2 • The Panthers concluded the Troy Classic 3-2,

earning their first losses of the season but also earning Pitt's second perfect game in program history.

• Against Southeastern Louisiana Sunday, Feb. 26, junior Kayla Harris threw her first perfect game en route to a 5-0 victory for the Panthers.

• Pitt began the weekend with their first loss of the season to Lipscomb, a 1-0 affair after a walk-off home run sealed the victory for the Bisons. The Panthers were able to rebound and defeat Lipscomb in the second matchup, 4-3. Pitt also defeated Southeastern Louisiana twice and fell to Troy in an eight-inning game, 7-5.

PITT GOES 4-0 AT ACC/BIG TEN CHALLENGE • The Panthers went undefeated, 4-0, at the ACC/

Big Ten Challenge.• Pitt defeated both Nebraska and Northwestern

twice, including a 2-1, eight-inning thriller against the Wildcats in which junior Kayla Harris tossed a one-hitter in the game.

• Harris was dominant on the mound for the Panthers, tossing a complete game to earn her fourth win of the season. The junior gave up just a single hit in the first inning before holding the Wildcats scoreless through the remainder of the game with the help of her defense. Harris finished with three strikeouts.

• Pitt outscored its opponents 23-8 over the course of the weekend.

UCF KNIGHTS INVITATIONAL • Pitt began the season at the UCF Knights Invita-

tional in Orlando, Fla., and returned home with a 5-0 record.

• Highlighting the Invitational were the Panthers' two wins over then-No. 20 Kentucky. Pitt defeated the Wildcats 3-1 in the opening matchup and 6-3 in game three of the weekend.

• Pitt also took down Florida A&M 5-2 and UCF, who was receiving votes, 6-3 in an eight-inning game.

• Lone senior Kaitlin Manuel began her season with a bang, producing seven hits in 15 at-bats, good for a team-leading .467 batting average. She scored three runs and drove in seven.

• The Panthers’ first home run on the season came at the hands of Manuel. The solo homer to right field gave Pitt an early 1-0 lead in the second game against Kentucky.

2016 SEASON IN REVIEW • Pitt surpassed the 30-win mark for the second

consecutive season in 2016, marking the first time in program history that has been accom-plished.

• The Panthers advanced to the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, falling to eventual ACC champion No. 6 Florida State in the first round.

AT THE PLATE • Offensively, the Panthers will look to a core

of power hitting players in juniors Giorgiana Zeremenko, Erin Hershman and McKayla Taylor, in addition to sophomore Olivia Gray.

• Zeremenko, a NFCA All-Region Second Team selection last year, will be expected to provide the pop in Pitt’s offense after hitting 17 home runs in 2016, a Panthers’ single-season record to go along with a team-leading .392 average and 52 runs batted in. Her .888 slugging percentage topped the conference and sat seventh nationally.

• Hershman, who garnered All-ACC First Team honors, hit .366 last season and stole 12 bases on 13 attempts.

• Taylor (.331) and Gray (.325) both recorded a batting average over .300 a year ago.

• Pitt will also rely on the incoming bats of the freshmen class and Akron sophomore transfer Gabrielle Fredericks. Fredericks joins the Panthers after leading the Zips with a .319 batting average. Fredericks also hit 12 doubles and drove in 25 runs.

• Of the incoming freshman, Hannah Edwards, Alexee Haynes and Connor McGaffic are all expected to make an impact in the lineup.

• One of two Pennsylvania products from the incoming class, Edwards holds five Pennsylvania state records, and competed in the PGF High School All-American softball game this past fall and was tabbed the No. 7 recruit in the country per FloSoftball.

• Haynes is a corner infielder and a top 100 recruit who hit a sparkling .612 percentage with seven home runs, 55 runs batted in and 60 runs scored. Haynes’ tremendous season culminated in her being named the West Virginia Softball Gatorade Player of the Year.

A WPIAL product and Class A All-State First Team honoree, McGaffic will also add power to the lineup.

IN THE FIELD • The Panthers will see some change in the field

when it comes to this year’s roster, however three positions will remain consistent. Senior Kaitlin Manuel, along with juniors McKayla Taylor and Erin Hershman will all remain in their positions from last year, first base, shortstop and center field, respectively.

• Manuel, started all 52 games for Pitt last season at first base. An asset in the field, she possessed a .995 fielding percentage, committing just two errors in 441 chances and three errors total in the past two seasons combined.

• Taylor and Hershman also started every game last season for the Panthers and will look to do the same in 2017.

• Looking to fill the gap of former standout Maggie Sevilla at second base will be either Marissa DeMatteo or Alexis Solak, both sophomores who saw minimal playing time in 2016.

• Sophomore Olivia Gray, who played mainly outfield last season, will move her talents to the infield as she takes over for Shelby Pickett at third base. Solak could also potentially see time at third, a position she play last season if Pickett moved behind the plate.

• Pitt’s outfield will also have new faces as multiple freshmen vie for the remaining two spots. Hannah Edwards and Connor McGaffic will look to fill the positions in left and right, respectively at the start of the season. Freshman Kaitlyn Kruger, sophomore Taylor Myers and junior transfer Taylor Stimson will also compete for time in the outfield.

ON THE MOUND / BEHIND THE PLATE • On the mound, Pitt will rely on junior Kayla

Harris, who has seen substantial time since her freshman season with the Panthers, along with sophomore Sarah Dawson and freshman Brittany Knight.

• Harris tossed a team leading 158.2 innings pitched last season for the Panthers, obtaining a 3.40 ERA and 16 wins. Harris also accumulated 117 strikeouts. The Chesapeake, Va., native started 29 games for Pitt last season, going the distance in 13 while recording five shutouts.

• Dawson provided one of the biggest Pitt softball storylines in 2016, tossing a five-inning perfect game in a 13-0 defeat of Providence. The Bridgewater, Mass., native finished her freshman season with an 8-0 record.

• Knight is also expected to help chip into the workload alongside Harris and Dawson this season.

APRILE AT THE HELM • Beginning her ninth season at the helm of the

Pitt softball program, head coach Holly Aprile will look to guide the Panthers towards continued success in 2017.

• Aprile coached Pitt to back-to-back 30-win seasons in 2015 and 2016, marking the first time that feat has been reached in program history.

• Over the last three years, Aprile has led seven players to NFCA All-Region and All-ACC honors.

• The Panthers reached the ACC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history in 2015 under the leadership of Aprile. Pitt went on to reach the regional final before falling to the eventual WCWS runner-up Michigan.

KEY DEPARTURES • The Panthers will be moving into 2017 without

Shelby Pickett, Maggie Sevilla and Jenna Modic, three key members that played significant roles in the team’s increased success the past two years.

• All three departures started every game for Pitt last season and put up huge numbers at the plate. The trio’s bats will be missed as all three players hit above a .300 clip, led by Sevilla who held the third-best average on the team (.351).

PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISH • The Pitt softball team was predicted to finish

eighth out of 11 total teams in the ACC Softball Preseason Coaches Poll as announced by the league office Monday, Feb. 6.

• No. 3/3 Florida State, who will look for their third consecutive ACC title, is predicted to finish first for the third straight season. The Seminoles received 10 first-place votes and 100 points, while Louisville came in at second with 86.

• No. 22/22 Notre Dame received 84 points to round out the top three, while North Carolina (67) and Virginia Tech (58) finish off the top five.

• Coached Pitt to a 31-21 overall record, marking the second consecutive season

where the Panthers have won 30-plus games.

• Led Pitt to its second ACC Tournament appearance in back-to-back years.

• Aided in the development of freshman pitcher Sarah Dawson, who tossed Pitt’s first

perfect game in program history in a 13-0, five-inning win over Providence (2/27).

• Recorded her 200th career win after defeating North Carolina 7-3 at Vartabedian

Field.

• Guided sophomore Giorgiana Zeremenko up the statistical leaderboard, as she

became one of the top hitters in the conference and nation. Zeremenko led the

ACC in slugging percentage (.888) and ranked third in home runs (17). She finished

seventh in the nation in slugging percentage, 11th in home runs per game (0.34) and

16th in total home runs.

• Zeremenko also broke the all-time single-season home run record, recording 17

long balls in 2016.

• Pitt concluded the regular season leading the ACC in home runs (75), slugging

percentage (.552), doubles (82) and total bases (735).

• Three Panthers were named National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA)

Mid-Atlantic All-Region selections. Redshirt Senior Maggie Sevilla and sophomore

Giorgiana Zeremenko were second-team honorees, while sophomore McKayla Taylor

• Led Pitt to its best season in program history as numerous school records fell, both

individually and as a team.

• The team finished with a 34-17 overall record and a 13-8 mark in Big East play. The 34

overall victories and 13 conference wins were both the most in school history.

• The Panthers won 10 of their final 13 games.

• Four Panthers earned their first-ever All-Big East honors, a program record. Kelly

Hmiel was selected the program’s first-ever National Fastpitch Coaches Association

(NFCA) Player of the Week on March 15.


• Directed Pitt to a 27-25 finish.

• Received the highest seed ever at the Big East Tournament (No. 6).

• Junior Alyssa O’Connell pitched her first-ever no-hitter in 9-0 win against St. Francis.

• A pitcher/outfielder, Aprile was a four-time all-conference first team selection (1989-

92) and twice was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year.

• Tabbed the 1992 A-10 Pitcher of the Year, 1989 A-10 Rookie of the Year and named the

A-10 Tournament’s outstanding pitcher twice (1989, 1992).

• Played a pivotal role in leading UMass to its first trip to the College World Series in

1992, and closed her career with a then-school record 77 victories.

• In honor of her achievements, she was inducted into the UMass Athletic Hall of Fame

just three years after her graduation.

• She was also a participant on the United States National Team from 1993-99,

competing in the U.S. Olympic Festival (1993-97), Pan Am Qualifying (1994, 1997) and

the South Pacific Classic (1998).

Education

• Graduated from UMass in 1992 with a degree in Sport Management.

• Earned her master’s degree in political science, while working as a graduate

assistant coach at Eastern Illinois University in 1995.
