Trees Pool

The Panthers have called Trees Pool home since its first meet on January 5, 1963. Over the last 50-plus years, Trees Pool has been one of the premier ven-ues in all of swimming and diving for competition and spectating.

Always keeping up with modern technology and advancements, Trees Pool was equipped with two state-of-the-art LED displays in 2015, made possible by donations from Gertrude Petersen and her late husband, John.

The main LED video display measures approximately 14.5 feet high and 26 feet wide. Variable content zon-ing will allow the display to show one large image or be divided into different zones to show any combination of live video, instant replays, school records, lap times and advertisements with crystal clarity.

Following the 2015-16 season, construction began on the largest renovation project in the history of Trees Pool. Now completed, updates include new men’s and

women’s locker rooms and the addition of a team room for the Panthers that features a nutrition center, a lounge and a legacy wall. That project is now complete, giving Pitt swimming & diving a significant asset to aid the program’s efforts in recruiting and developing talented student-athletes for years to come.

The 75-by-165 foot Olympic sized pool, also recently renovated has dual capability of an eight-lane, 50-meter course, or a 20-lane, 25-yard course. Renovations to the pool have allowed it to achieve current NCAA regulations in addition to the installation of new diving board platforms and railings. The circulation, draining and heating systems have also been refurbished to ensure top level quality.

The diving area is equipped with two, 1-meter and 3-meter durafirm stands with maxiflex boards, in addition to multiple diving towers with a 16-foot water depth.

John Hargis was named head coach of the Pitt swimming and diving program on April 5, 2016.

A 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist and a 12-time NCAA All-American, Hargis spent the previous three seasons as the associate head coach at his alma mater, Auburn, where he graduated from in 1999. Additionally, he was previously the head coach at Penn State from 2008-13.

“John has the pedigree, passion and track record of success that will serve as a strong foun-dation for excellence at Pitt,” University of Pittsburgh Athletic Director Scott Barnes said. “We have the shared vision of academic achievement, winning championships and graduat-ing our student-athletes. I have no doubt that John will help take Pitt swimming and diving to new and exciting heights.”

At Auburn the past three seasons, Hargis helped lead a program that annually contends for top honors in the Southeastern Conference and nationally. This past season, the Tigers’ men finished 10th at the NCAA Championships. The swimmers under Hargis’ direction broke three school records and won five titles at the SEC Championships.

While at Auburn, Hargis coached Annie Lazor to a Bronze Medal at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.

As head coach at Penn State, Hargis established the Nittany Lions as perennial contenders in the Big Ten. In five seasons, his student-athletes produced 74 All-America performances. In Hargis’ final season, the Penn State men and women combined for 20 All-America citations at the 2013 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

During his Penn State tenure, he also coached on the international level. Working as an as-sistant for Team USA at the 2011 World University Games, Hargis helped the Americans earn 13 medals.

Prior to Penn State, Hargis spent the 2007-08 season as head women’s coach at the Univer-sity of Arkansas at Little Rock. He also spent time as the head coach and the chief executive

officer of the Little Rock Arkansas Dolphins swim club, which enjoyed unprecedented championship success under his watch.

Hargis served as a collegiate assistant coach at Ar-kansas-Little Rock (2006-07), Penn State (2003-06) and UNLV (2002-03).

A native of Clinton, Ark., Hargis is a 1999 gradu-ate of Auburn with a degree in health promotion/sports management. One of the most decorated swimmers to come out of the state of Arkansas, he was inducted into the Arkansas State Swimming Hall of Fame in 2001 and was selected as one of Arkansas’ 100 Greatest Athletes of all-time.

Hargis was part of Auburn’s first NCAA champi-onship team in 1997 as well as the Tigers’ initial SEC championship squad in 1994. In addition to a dozen All-America citations, he was a three-time SEC champion in the 100 butterfly. Hargis won an Olympic Gold Medal at the 1996 Games in Atlanta as a member of the 400 medley relay team.

He and his wife Lauren, a Pitt graduate, have three children: daughter, Faith, and sons, John and Nathan.

Under first-year head coach John Hargis and his mostly new coaching staff, the Panthers aim for major improvements in the pool this season. Coming off 10th place finishes in the ACC in 2016 for both the men and the women, Pitt seeks an improvement in one of the nation’s top swimming & diving conferences to build a foundation for the program’s bright future. In swimming, Pitt returns several athletes capable of competing near the top of the ACC, while some marquee transfers and freshmen could also contribute. For diving, Coach Julian Krug returns for his 38th season at Pitt after helping Dominic Giordano win the program’s first individual NCAA Championship in the 3M dive last season, while Meme Sharp won Pitt’s first individual ACC title in any sport in the 3M dive. Both Giordano and Sharp return for Pitt in 2016-17.

The Men:The Pitt men’s swimming & diving team hopes to build towards the ACC Championships with the goal of achieving an improved team finish while also sending as many individuals to the NCAA Championships as possible.

2016 NCAA 3M diving champion and 1M All-American and now senior Dominic Giordano leads Pitt from the diving perspective, while returning ACC qualifiers Zach Lierley, Spencer Gray and Scott Simmer are among a quality class of other returners.

A three-time NCAA qualifier in the backstroke while at UNLV, Henrique Machado joins Pitt for his redshirt senior season and could make a major impact for the Panthers. Machado, a native of Brazil, was also a seven-time WAC gold medalist while racing for the Runnin’ Rebels.

In total, Pitt welcomes 11 newcomers on the men’s side, with each having an opportunity to make an immediate impact in the pool for the Panthers.

The Women:Like the men, the Pitt women are highlighted by one standout diver and a strong corps of returning swimmers in 2016-17.

The returning ACC champion in the 3M, junior diver Meme Sharp hopes to build off her stellar 2015-16 campaign that saw her become Pitt’s first ever ACC women’s gold medalist in any sport while she also qualified for the NCAA Championships.

In swimming, Pitt returns several talented athletes from last year’s team that posted a 20-3 overall record, including exciting ACC victories over Notre Dame and Georgia Tech.

Kinga Cichowska, Amanda Richey, Katherine Fernander and Athena Summa are just some of the familiar names that could make an impact for Pitt this season and hopefully compete for ACC Championships in Atlanta in February.

Another transfer from UNLV, Germany native Lina Rathsack, leads the group of 13 newcomers to the Pitt women’s roster. Rathsack qualified for the 2016 NCAA Championships in three events, the 100 breast, 200 breast and 200 IM, and was consistenly competing for Mountain West titles while at UNLV.

With a highly regarded group of freshmen also joining the Panthers, 2016-17 could be the season that the Pitt women start rising towards the top of the ACC in the pool under the program’s experience and committed new leadership.
