PURPOSE AND USE OF PROCESS INDUSTRY PRACTICES

In an effort to minimize the cost of process industry facilities, this Practice hasbeen prepared from the technical requirements in the existing standards of majorindustrial users, contractors, or standards organizations. By harmonizing thesetechnical requirements into a single set of Practices, administrative, application, andengineering costs to both the purchaser and the manufacturer should be reduced. Whilethis Practice is expected to incorporate the majority of requirements of most users,individual applications may involve requirements that will be appended to and takeprecedence over this Practice. Determinations concerning fitness for purpose andparticular matters or application of the Practice to particular project or engineeringsituations should not be made solely on information contained in these materials. Theuse of trade names from time to time should not be viewed as an expression ofpreference but rather recognized as normal usage in the trade. Other brands having thesame specifications are equally correct and may be substituted for those named. AllPractices or guidelines are intended to be consistent with applicable laws andregulations including OSHA requirements. To the extent these Practices or guidelinesshould conflict with OSHA or other applicable laws or regulations, such laws orregulations must be followed. Consult an appropriate professional before applying oracting on any material contained in or suggested by the Practice.

1. Introduction

1.1 PurposeThe purpose of this Practice is to provide a uniform system for identifying piping lineclasses.

1.2 ScopeThis Practice establishes the system used for identifying piping line classes.

2. General

The base piping line class designator system consists of five alternating alphanumeric fieldscontaining one or two characters each (maximum of eight characters). Each field describesvarious features of the piping line class.

At the user’s option, revisions, alterations, and/or additions can be made to a base line classspecification by adding an alphabetic character (maximum of two, making for a maximum of tencharacters total to define a line) after the fifth field designator to indicate that changes have beenmade to the base PIP document. The addendum alphabetic character(s) should be added directlyto the base line class designator number as a suffix and without a delimiter.

3. Field Definitions and Example

3.1 First Field3.1.1 The first field defines the pressure rating and is numeric in character.

3.1.2 The pressure rating field consists of one or two numeric characters as shown inTable 1.

3.2 Second Field3.2.1 The second field defines the nominal pipe material and is alphabetic in character.

3.2.2 The nominal pipe material field consists of two alphabetic characters as shownin Table 2.

3.3 Third Field3.3.1 The third field defines the corrosion/erosion allowance and is numeric in

character.

3.3.2 The corrosion/erosion allowance field consists of one numeric character asshown in Table 3.

3.4 Fourth Field3.4.1 The fourth field defines the joint construction/construction type and is alphabetic

in character.

3.4.2 The joint construction/construction type field consists of one alphabeticcharacter as shown in Table 4.

3.5 Fifth Field3.5.1 The fifth field defines a sequential number for numbering variations of the line

class specification and is numeric in character.

3.5.2 The sequential number field consists of two numeric characters. The field rangesfrom numbers 01 through 99, with numbers 01 through 79 being reserved for useby PIP and numbers 80 through 99 being reserved for use by owner.

3.6 ExampleAn example of a complete piping line class designator is 3CS1S01. This designatormeans:

First Field: 3 = ASME Pressure Class 300

Second Field: CS = Carbon Steel Base Material Piping System

Third Field: 1 = Nominal Corrosion Allowance in multiples of 1/16"

Fourth Field: S = Socketweld Small Bore Construction and Buttweld andFlanged Large Bore Construction

Fifth Field: 01 = Sequence Number (first in this piping material/ pressureclass series)

4. Notes

PIP Piping utilizes a set of standard notes and note numbers on line class specifications toprovide the user with additional information (i.e., guidance, caution, clarification, etc.).Occasionally, a user may find the need to add company- or project-specific notes to a line classspecification. This can be accomplished through the use of an Addendum form.

Note: Numbers 01 through 699 are reserved for PIP use. Numbers 700 through 999 arereserved for users.

5. Cover Sheet

5.1 While many users plan to use PIP line class specifications “as is,” some users will find ithelpful and/or necessary to attach a “cover sheet” to the document and communicate theextent to which the line class specification applies within the user’s company and/or onthe user’s specific project. In cases where no revisions, alterations, or additions are madeto the line class specification, the dual-purpose cover sheet/addendum form should beused to convey the user’s application intentions. The cover sheet/addendum form islocated in Appendix A.

5.2 When the form is used as a cover sheet, the user must complete the fields for PIP PipingPractice number, piping line class material specification number, and scope. The usershould enter the words “No Change” in Sections 2 through 10. The addendum numbershould not be filled in when the form is used solely as a cover sheet. An example of howthe form might be used as a cover sheet is shown in Appendix B.

6. Revisions, Alterations, and Additions

6.1 Users of PIP line class specifications may have company, location, or projectrequirements that require revisions, alterations, and/or additions to the base PIP line classspecification(s). To accommodate such cases, the dual-purpose cover sheet/addendumform is to be used.

6.1 To use the cover sheet/addendum form for revisions, alterations, and/or additions to thebase line class specification, fill in the PIP Piping Practice number, piping line classmaterial specification number, and addendum number alphabetic character(s). Within theapplicable section (i.e., Scope, Design, Materials, etc.), fill in the necessary informationto detail the deviation(s) being made to the base line class specification. Users maycreate more than one addendum for a base line class specification. An example of howthe cover sheet/addendum form might be utilized as an addendum is shown inAppendix C.
