Every student and staff member in our kura stepped up and participated with PRIDE. From helping to set up and preparing kai to going hard with the waiata and haka, everyone had an important role to play in supporting their whānau. We had some excellent feedback from the community including some awe-some words of affirmation from our Mayor Brian Hanna who was really im-pressed with the quality and structure of our afternoon. A big ‘Paki Up’ must go to our contributing schools who had our guests and students captivated with their performances. Piopio Primary with their item ‘Kaitiaki of the Mokau awa’ added such depth to our day with the history of our local area. The confidence in which the students performed and listening to those talented singers was sensational! We were also treated to a special item performed by local rising stars who filled our gymnasium with their

stunning vocals. We must thank our sponsors who kindly gifted us some amazing prizes this year, we were overwhelmed by your generosity and willingness to support the students. So a MASSIVE thank you to the following businesses: Atkin-son's & Associates, The Fat Pigeon, PGG Wrightsons Piopio, RD1 Piopio, The Warehouse and New World. A big thanks must also go to our judges, Roy Willison, Joanne Taitoko, Matarina and Rozel Coffin; our guests and parents who made a big effort to join our celebrations and our parent / whānau helpers who came in and supported our students on their kai days! Lastly…A massive congratulations to our KOWHAI whānau who took out the number one spot and our Matariki Trophy for 2017. Ka mau te wehi, Kowhai!

Celebrating science in country schools

Piopio College has set in place the tradition of entering in this great science

competition, thanks to invitations from Aria Primary School. This year stu-

dents from Year 9 carried out a range of investigations resulting in a colourful

display of their project.

Initial investigations into suitable experiments were carried out followed by

brainstorming how to turn their interest into a fair test. This is where all factors

in the experiment are kept the same except the one factor you want to see

the effects of. For one of the Coke and Mentos experiments this was to see

how changing the number of Mentos lollies effected the rate of reaction with

the Coke.

Each group had to keep a logbook of what they did to progress their investi-

gation and this, along with their final display board, was included in the judg-

ing process.

A miscommunication meant our entries were delivered late but thanks to

Heather and her staff the entries were accepted and the displays were judged

after hours, ready for prize giving the next day.

Comment was made by the judges that the standard of investigation and

display this year was markedly improved on last year – well done to all who

participated!

A number of entries received Judges Choice Awards, however the major

prize winners in the Year 9 category were as follows.

Written by Richard O’Dea — HOD Science

Third Place: Paris Keightley, Katelin Warren and Kendall Burton for their

project on Mentos and Coke.

Second Place: Sidney Baker and Freddy Davey for their project Delighted,

investigating which colour paper absorbed the most light.

First Prize: Asha Goddard and Jordan Leineweber for their project on

Energy Efficiency. This involved setting a lamp up next to a chocolate egg

and seeing what happened if different bulbs were used. Clearly the least

efficient bulbs turn their energy into heat and melted the chocolate eggs

faster – an awesome idea, well designed and reported.
