The following is excerpted from Mr. Mailloux’s remarks to our graduates at commencement.

Graduates, tonight, I join your valedictorian in saying that the final page turns in this chapter of your lives. In a few minutes, you will no longer be Trinity students, but will be counted among our school’s alumni. Trinity’s bells will no longer ring for you.

There will be no more need to submit parents’ notes to the office. Your teachers will no longer look for your names on their attendance rosters. Your high school experience is ending. A page is turning. Your “Trinity Chapter” is ending. However, as one chapter ends, another begins! And YOU are the authors. Page by page,

chapter by chapter, you are composing the stories of your lives. As I listened to your reflections on the day of your prom, I couldn’t help but think of all that you will take away from Trinity as you go off on your individual journeys to make your mark on the world. That day, I heard of friendship and love, of good times and bad, of beloved teach-ers, and of a bond between you and your classmates that will last a lifetime. I heard amazing young people share moments from their Trinity years with a depth and sensitivity that liter-ally brought tears to my eyes. And I thought, this is what it’s all about. Beyond the hours of study and homework, beyond the excitement of sports and championships, you’ve learned something incredible – the power of love and friendship to shape our lives in the most meaningful of ways. I heard of moments that I know will follow you for the rest of your lives. I congratulate you for being able to see this most important truth about life and for being able to experience the joy of that truth. As with any great novel, we can’t wait to see what that next chapter holds. We know that challenges await you and that you will have to make important choices. We know that life still has much to teach you. We know, too, that you will have family and friends to support and guide you, and we know you have many, many great things to achieve. Choosing Trinity meant that you had to commit to more work, tougher grading, and higher expectations. It meant you would be expected to become more involved – through your activities and service. It meant you would be in a Catholic school, a place that stands for values that aren’t always followed in the world around us. It meant you were choosing a more challenging path than the one taken by most high school students. …Graduates, look around; breathe it all in. There are few defining moments in life, and this is one of them. The page is turning. This chapter is ending. …The page is turning. Your “Trinity Chapter” is written. Now, go, set the world on fire and live your dreams. We can’t wait to see what your next chapter will hold, and we join you in the wonder of the possibilities for your future. May God bless you on your journey and may you always feel His presence in your lives. May you always feel the joy of love in your lives, and may you know that you are forever pioneers!

Yours in Pioneer Pride,Denis MaillouxClass of ’72

FROM

THE

PRINCIPAL

By Mrs. Terri Greene Henning Trinity High School Communications Director

One robot. Three people. A partner robot. Three more people. A chal-lenge to master. Two minutes. When you get right down to it, that’s VEX robotics in a nutshell. There’s a robot—a boxy-ish contraption of aluminum, rubber, plastic, and electron-ics. There are three humans—typically, a driver (the one who operates the drivetrain), an operator (who operates the rest of the robot, i.e., its arm) and one coach, either another student or an adult mentor. The robot has the help of another robot, thus forming a two-team alliance of drivers, opera-tors, coaches and robots against another two-team alliance. There’s a game to master, one that requires the robot—operated by the drivers—to move around on a square field against the two other robots all trying to do the same thing. Oh, and it’s all done in two minutes. So, for three and a half days, as part of my job to “cover” the VEX Robot-ics World Championship in Anaheim, Calif., as Trinity’s communications director, I watched countless matches, watched as the robots battled one another to pick up blue and red balls and barrels and place them into hold-ers to score points. I snapped photos of our Trinity students as they rewired pieces, tested their drivetrains and moveable parts, rebuilt their robots, and fixed whatever part or piece had just failed them in competition. I captured video of their competitions, trying to keep the camera steady as I fought the urge to cheer and clap. And, of course, I thrust a videocamera in their faces after every victory and every loss. I saw our students at their best and their worst, exhausted, frustrated, hungry, and stressed. I watched as they devoured boxes of pizzas in seconds and pumped steady levels of caffeine in their bloodstreams. I heard words I probably shouldn’t have and was the recipient of quite a few “can’t you just turn that off?” or “please, leave me alone. I don’t want to talk right now.” But I also saw young men and women work like mad, performing tasks I don’t begin to understand. I saw sparks (literal sparks, not just tempers) as robots were being built, dismantled, and put back together again. I watched our students keep their calm (and sometimes not) for two excruciating minutes of each match. I watched them win. I watched them lose. I watched as two of our teams were chosen to move on past the qualifying rounds—it was like being a part of Selection Sunday in advance of March Madness. And just like watching the brackets fill up as teams win, lose, move on, or go home, I watched our own Trinity teams inch closer and closer to making it to the “big dance.” And while I fell fast asleep due to exhaustion every night, those students were pulling all-nighters to work on their ro-bots, read scouting reports of their opponents, and devise strategy. Tied with the most number of teams sent to the World Championships (7), Trinity Robotics is a force to be reck-oned with. Our students, decked out in red T-shirts and red and white-checkered rugby shirts—certainly established a presence. In the end, one team, 40J (seniors Jason Butchard and Eric Gadecki), entering the competition as the 24th seed (of 99) in their division, made it all the way to the finals of their division, finishing 6-3-1 overall. Team 40F (freshman Bryan Therrien and sophomore Alex Millos), the 21st seed, were quarterfinalists, finishing with a 6-3-1 record. Our other teams showed heart, flared tempers, battled hard, and eventually fell short of the goal. Still, I was awed. There was the all-female team of sophomore Melissa McCormick, junior Geraldine Kroll, and senior Kiersten Photiades, which battled drivetrain issues and ended the competition 3-7-0. Team 40B (seniors Kevin Pepin, Reinhardt Maltby, and sophomore Bernie Dolan) worked tirelessly on their “wall-bot,” which weighed more than 40 pounds and extended to more than six feet. Their bot, while impressive, suffered crushing malfunctions, and the team ended up with a misleading 3-6-1 record. Team 40G (senior Mitch Pellerin and junior Josh Martin) was impressive and fell just short of moving past the qualify-ing rounds, ending the competition 6-4-0. Team 40K (sophomore John Koziarski and freshman Joel Rand) finished with a 3-7-0 record, while 40D (sophomore Jake St. Germain and freshman Paul Gadecki) went 5-4-1. I could be using this space to write more about the matches and the scores. I could describe each robot to you. But I’m not sure you’d care very much. I can tell you this, however: Mr. Pouliot, the other adult mentors, and these robotics students are nothing short of amazing. They might call themselves nerds or geeks, but they’re going to change the world someday. They’ve already changed mine.

Pioneer SPIRIT 7

In his first year as Campus Minister at Trinity High School, former theology and social studies teacher Mr. Brian Flaherty is hard at work making sure that Trinity’s campus ministry center is, indeed, at the heart of the Pioneer experience. Following an incredibly busy fall and winter, Mr. Flaherty led the school community in Lenten liturgies and devotions

and introduced two new celebrations here at Trinity that will soon become part of our legacy of tradition: the junior leadership ceremony and grandparents’ day. During the junior leadership ceremony, members of the junior class were “commissioned” as the future leaders of Trinity, receiving letters from coaches and advisers as well as a crucifix. And in one of this year’s most fun events, Trinity students invited their grandparents to school for the day. After sharing in our Ascension Thursday liturgical celebration, students took their grandparents on a tour of the school and then gathered once again in the gym for a catered lunch. This summer brings little rest to the efforts of Campus Ministry, as Mr. Flaherty has two trips planned for students: a return visit to the Lasallian Youth Assembly in July as well as another trip to serve the poor at the St. Francis Inn in Phila-delphia, a trip Trinity has been involved with for several years. Stay tuned to Mr. Flaherty’s blog for details, stories, and a look ahead: http://thscampusministry.blogspot.com/
