Being the father of 9 and 10 year old boys brings me many joys. One of them is seeing movies I probably would not see if it were up to me. Two nights ago, I was watching, for the third or fourth time, Surf’s Up, which is sort of an Endless Summer with cartoon penguins. This time was different because this time when Cody, the lead actor, er, penguin, said hello to Kelly Slater, the name registered. “Kelly Slater! he’s the star of our new IMAX®!” Even my kids were impressed. I think you will be, too. The Ultimate Wave: Tahiti is the ultimate summer IMAX movie. It’s got action, it’s got thrills, and it has a great story. Kelly Slater is half the story. The other half is Raimana Van Bastolaer, Tahiti’s most accomplished surfer. Slater is a competitor. He sees surfing as a sport. Van Bastolaer sees it as an art form. There is no right or wrong to this, and the only winner will be you, when you experience this stunningly gorgeous film. In addition to nature’s grandeur in the giant waves of Tahiti, you can also experience the power of nature on a crystalline scale in the new exhibit, Diamonds! This is really two exhibits in one. The first tells the story of diamonds from their formation through industrial uses and all the way to the diamond on your finger. The second brings the story close to home by focusing on the diamonds found in our neighboring state of Arkansas. There is much more here and at Lichterman Nature Center—enough adventure and fun for a whole family stay-cation. It’s the best deal around and, if you are a member the price is even lower. So, come chill out with us. Surf’s up at the Pink Palace.Sincerely,

Director of Museums, Steve Pike

From Rocks to RichesTake an in-depth look at the hardest natural substance on Earth and arguably the most glamorous. Travel deep within the Earth to learn how diamonds were formed, billions of years ago. See how diamonds are mined, test their amazing properties, learn about uses of diamonds in modern technology, and try evaluating gem-quality diamonds. Your diamond exploration begins underground:

FormationCarbon requires just the right pressure and temperature to form diamond. Explore the complexities of diamond formation in a computerized model of the Earth by trying to find the depths where diamonds commonly form.

ExplorationCarried from deep within the Earth to the surface byvolcanic eruptions, finding diamonds can take decades.Meet a diamond exploration geologist and learn aboutthe challenges and rewards of diamond exploration.

Mining and ProcessingWhile diamonds were first mined in India over 4,000 years ago, modern mining as we know it began in South Africa in the late 19th century. Today, Canada is emerging as a major diamond producer. Learn the mining processes involved in producing a single, one carat, polished and gem-quality diamond.

PropertiesDiamonds are the hardest natural substances knownto man. They are nonmetallic, do not conduct electricity, have great thermal conductivity, and refractive index. These properties make them pretty in jewelry, anduseful in many industrial, technological and scientificapplications as well. Use real tools to discover the properties of diamonds and their many uses.

The GemVisit a jewelry store and explore how diamonds arecut and polished to liberate their fiery beauty. Color, clarity, carat, and cut determine the value.

Crater of Diamonds State ParkArkansas is home to the Crater of Diamonds State Park, the only place in North America where park visitors candig for diamonds and, keep the diamonds they find.
