“What’s Past is Prologue.”~William Shakespeare, The Tempest

I take great pride and pleasure in sharing with you the news that the Pink Palace Family of Museums has again been awarded accreditation by the American Association of Museums (AAM).

Everyone involved with our museum deserves credit for this: The City of Memphis; the Memphis Museums, Inc., Board of Trustees; our staff; all our volunteers, especially the wonderful Friends of the Pink Palace; our donors, members and other supporters.

We can all be especially proud of this achievement because it is one earned by each and every part of the Pink Palace Family—Lichterman Nature Center, Mallory-Neely House, Magevney House, Coon Creek Science Center; as well as the CTI IMAX® Theater, the Sharpe Planetarium and the natural and regional history exhibits at 3050 Central Avenue.

What does accreditation mean?

It means adhering to best practices in the museum profession. More than that, though, it means striving to live up to your institution’s mission. The short version of ours is to “inspire people to learn how history, science, technology and nature shape the Mid-South.” It’s a big mission, a noble one, and AAM’s judgment that we are living up to it is very heartening. To put it in perspective, only about 10% of America’s museums are accredited.

The AAM Accreditation Commission cited many aspects of our museum system for special praise: our care of the artifacts in our collection, our trial membership program, and our focus on service to our community—especially underserved parts of it. But the Commission’s report is not just about our past. Over and over it mentioned our Strategic Plan for the future and the progress we have made on it.

Thus, the quote above from The Tempest. We have done great things. We will do even greater ones in the future just as our Strategic Plan calls for: full-dome video in the Planetarium, all new natural and cultural history exhibits, as well as ones on fitness, nutrition, health and wellness.

Thank you for being a part of the wonderful past and present of our museum system. Here is to the future!

Director of Museums, Steve Pike

OPEN February 12When Veronica Coleman-Davis was sworn in as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee in 1993, she became the first black person, as well as the first woman to serve as United States attorney in Tennessee. She was also a founding partner in Tennessee’s first all-female law firm. Charles H. Mason was born on a farm near Bartlett, September 8, 1862, the son of devout Missionary Baptist parents. He said that he was a sickly child but was restored to good health in 1880 when the glory of God came down upon him. He established the church of God in Christ in 1896. When Mason died in 1961, COGIC was one of the largest Pentecostal denominations in the world. This exhibit is part of our Connections Exhibit Series, which is aimed at building our African-American collection of artifacts. Ultimately, many of these artifacts will be part of our new permanent exhibits.
