Time to Work on Our Attitude Toward Volunteers

As a Pastor who has served in the Church for many years, I have genuinely admired people who volunteer to serve in their congregation. Why? Because I know that there are so many others things to keep them busy elsewhere in their lives. In other words, they don’t have to be here. But like any other volunteer, there are all kinds of motivations for serving. Their motivation can come from their love for their Lord Jesus, their love for their brothers and sisters in Christ as they serve them with their time and talents.

We have a newly elected Council of Ministries and a Board of Elders. It is good for us to keep in mind that they have agreed to serve. They are not hired hands. They are not elected representatives of a constituency. They have answered the call to serve, but also lead in our congregation. Our goal is to begin to focus away from money and taking care of the building and start looking at doing more ministry in our congregation and our community. After all our Lord called His church to be about caring for people. It is amazing what happens in a congregation when this simple priority takes first place.

How should these people who choose to serve be treated? With respect and honor for their willingness to serve. Again, they don’t have to do this. It is not about power, or respect or control. It is about service. So I would ask that we pursue a course to change the culture in our congregation. I would ask you refrain from talking church business with our elected servants on Sunday morning or whenever we have worship. Basically that Sunday morning becomes a no church business zone. We need to remember that we are there, during that time to worship our Lord. When we talk business, we make it hard for them to worship.

Also, it is inappropriate to bombard them with emails, etc. Simply their purpose is to lead and serve, not keep people happy. I know this is a hard concept for some to understand, but that is what to expect in the future. Through all this we give all glory to our Lord Jesus in all things and that includes our volunteers.

In His Service,

Pastor

Fred Simon

From the Elder’s

On June 15-16, 2018, Dave Anderson and Pastor Simon attended the Nebraska District Convention. The convention process is unique and unlike any I had ever attended in the past. Essentially, it is one large business meeting over 2 days. The theme of the 2018 convention was Go and Be Reconciled: What Does This Mean? This was very fitting considering everything Pilgrim has experienced over the last 9-12 months. The Keynote speaker, Rev Ed Keinath presented material which was rooted in biblical reconciliation. The Cross can remind us how we can be reconciled. In the vertical relationship of the cross, God reconciled us to Himself through Christ. In the horizontal relationship, we are called to be reconciled with others for whom Christ has died. In order to be reconciled, we must first be reconciled to God and remember whose you are (Baptism), repent before God (Ten Commandments), and receive God’s forgiveness (Confession and Forgiveness). We must also be reconciled to others by confessing to the other person(s) (The Creed), forgive as God forgave us (The Lord’s Prayer), and restore with gentleness (The Lord’s Supper). Let’s remember 2 Corinthians 5:19-20 (In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting the trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God) as we prepare to celebrate our 75th Anniversary with gladness and joy. Let’s receive God’s forgiveness, forgive others as God forgave us, and restore our congregation with gentleness and humility. Thank you, Dave Anderson, Elder

To God Be the Glory!
