On the Via Francigena of Piemonte, especially in the crossing zone between France and Italy, can be found many signs of ancient stories of pilgrims and soldiers, merchants and men of God.

Like many border areas, the historical axis that connects Arles and Turin

crosses valleys and mountain that, over the centuries, have been plagued by

the vicissitudes of men: we retraced by car and on foot part of their journey

between the Durance and Susa Valleys, discovering places built, destroyed

and resurrected countless times, inhabited, first of all, by Ligurians, Celts and

Romans.

Briançon

Our journey starts from here, from this charming fortified village at the

junction of five valleys, which for centuries has been an important

commercial hub of the Western Alps, where fairs and markets vital for the

local mountain communities were regularly held.

Briançon, the highest town in France, is situated on a dry peak: in the

Vauban citadel , wells, fountains, a moat and canals have ensured, through

the centuries, its survival by saving it from fires and drought.

Inside the walls, the tall and narrow houses, the colorful balconies

overlooking the valley, the corners where lovers used to meet, the alleys and

the tiny restaurants, the antique doors and the Piazza d’Armi add poetry to

this UNESCO site protected and surrounded by fortresses of great

defensive and tactic importance in the alternation of leaders and rulers.

Clavière

We cross the border by car and we stop at Clavière, once a frontier post ,

today renowned winter resort.

Monginevro’s pass, where we are, connects the two most famous pilgrimage

roads in Europe: the Road of Santiago de Compostela and the Via

Francigena that leads to Rome. The mountains here are full of spirit and

human feelings. Since twenty years ago, on these slopes inhabited by pine,

alder and larch, one of the most fascinating animals of these regions – the

wolf – is back.

Near the Dora Riparia’s riverbed, in the San Gervasio’s canyon there is the

longest suspension bridge in the world (408 + 70 m) built a few years ago

in the heart of a ravine that sinks into the mountain. On the Mount Seguret

there are still the Saracen’s Cavern , where Arab troops settled for some

time after having conquered Spain more than 1000 years ago.

For lunch we stop at the Gran Bouc (http://www.granbouc.it/), a restaurant

that impresses us for Renata’s style, the landlady, and the her husband’s

cooking. The balance between good taste and elegant hospitality makes us

feel good and stay with us throughout the afternoon.

Susa

On the way to Susa, the Eco-museum Combano-Romean , the Gran

Bosco Natural Park (http://www.parcogranboscosalbertrand.it/Eindex.php%

20), three mountain villages that preserve old houses and medieval

fortifications – Gad, Exilles, Chiomonte – and the Avanà’s vineyards, a native

grape that is recently experiencing a prestigious rebirth.

The town that gives its name to one of the most beautiful valleys of the

Piedmont is alive, teeming with people who buy panettone, focaccia bread,

schnapps and wine walking among monuments and historic buildings. The

Romans left significant traces of their passage , and you can still see part

of the old walls, Porta Savoia, the Arch of Augustus, the aqueduct and the

amphitheater. On the other hand, the Castle, the remains of a fort, abbeys

and convents are a Middle Ages’ inheritance.

We treated ourselves to a stop at the Favro’s Bakery, that from 1870 has

been producing the most delicious and popular sweet focaccia bread of the

valley. Favros have been able to keep the recipe secret for four generations

and, up to now, according to many, it is still the best one.

Novalesa Abbey

The abbey dedicated to Saints Peter and Andrew has a troubled history ,

which unfortunately caused the loss or deterioration of an important part of its

heritage. The monastery was built around the 700, first Benedictine

monastery in Piedmont and the second in Italy, on a territory already

inhabited during the Iron Age. It went through periods of fervent spiritual and

commercial activity, but the incursions of those who were fighting for

dominance over the region, plagues and some decision taken by different

authorities (from the Council of Trento to Napoleon) put a strain on the life of

the monks that managed it, Benedictine first and then Cistercian.

After being abandoned for several decades , used as a hydrotherapy hub

and then as a college , now the Province of Turin has given it back to the

Benedictines who works on its preservation.

In this island of tranquility, that over the centuries has been both place of

hermitage and hospitality, the chapel of St. Nicholas and Sant’Eldrado is

definitely the part that captures most visitors and pilgrims’ attention: the

frescoes , dated between 1060 and 1070, wrap guests with bright colors and

faraway stories, leaving stunned with their intensity.

Sacra of San Michele

In 983 Count Ugo of Montboissier was seeking redemption and chose to

build an abbey. He chose the rocky spur of Mount Pirchiriano probably

because of its eremitical tradition and cultural prestige , passage of top

drawer pilgrims.

Legend has it that the angels brought the building material on top of the

Mount Pirchiriano, making it clear to the Count that that was the place

chosen by God : the consecration took place with fire. Michael, chief of the

angels , is the warrior archangel that defeated the dragon (the evil) who

wanted to fight against God, perfectly overlapping the combative deity of

pagans who had inhabited these regions for ages.

The Sacra

built in an absolute verticality, just around and above the rocky mountain

summit.

The abbey is not only the symbol of Piedmont and a very importan Via

Francigena’s point of interest, but it is also one of the main stops of St.

Michael’s Road from Jerusalem to Ireland on a perfect axis passing

throught Monte Sant’Angelo in the Gargano area and Mont-Saint-Michel in

Normandy.

Contemplating the valley below from the Sacra’s terrace, you feel in a single

breath the power, the energy and the pride of this place baptized with fire

and chosen by the angels.

St. Anthony of Ranverso’s Preceptory

By walking along the ancient road to France from Avigliana, you walk through

countryside until

Buttigliera Alta hamlet, up to St. Anthony of Ranverso’s delicious Preceptory,

a famous historic landmark for everyone traveling between Rome and

Santiago de Compostela.

Here, in fact, a hospice for pilgrims wanted by Umberto III of Savoy turned

into a place of care for those affected by shingles (in Italian called “St.

Anthony’s fire”). The Antonians, also called “Knights of the Holy Fire”,

managed the Preceptory cultivating the land and raising animals: they

somehow learned to use the pork fat as an emollient to ease the pain of

the sores caused by herpes zoster. Thanks to this noble function, the pig

became in the Turin region a kind of animal in the grace of God: he had the

freedom to move off to towns and cities, fed and quenched by all.

Maybe to give grace to a place that hid a lot of sorrow within its walls (it was

also a hospital for people affected by the plague ), Preceptory’s exteriors

Turin

Turin has little medieval charm.

Alessandra Masino, our guide, helps us to sharpen our eye to discover Turin

under the skin.

A thousand years ago this city was a place of transit and the walls

surrounded a small urban area of which little remains today. We walk through

the narrow streets of the city where you can still feel an intimate

atmosphere , in search of a state of mind that somehow binds us to the

pilgrims of the past.

We are looking for walls, arches, brick, access doors, fords, churches,

ancient courts, stake’s place: a world of images that in part we discover and

in part recreate.

Our path was made of moments.

This tour, organized by the Province of Turin, gave us bites of culture,

spirituality and hospitality that speak about the vocation of a territory to

nature.

In the frenzy of our lives, it is not easy to find a dimension of travel able to put

La Via Francigena del Piemonte custodisce, soprattutto nell’area di valico tra Francia e Italia, storie di pellegrini e combattenti, commercianti e uomini di Dio.

Come molte zone di confine, l’asse storico che collega Arles a Torino

attraversa valli e valichi che, nei secoli, sono stati tormentati dalle

vicissitudini degli uomini: abbiamo ripercorso, in auto e a piedi, parte del loro

cammino tra la Valle della Durance e la Val di Susa, scoprendo luoghi

costruiti, distrutti e risorti infinite volte, abitati, primi fra tutti, da Liguri, Celti e

Romani.

Briançon

Il nostro viaggio parte da qui, da questo incantevole villaggio fortificato

all’incrocio di cinque valli che per secoli ha rappresentato un importante

snodo commerciale delle Alpi Occidentali, dove si svolgevano fiere e

mercati di vitale importanza per le comunità montane.



Briançon, città più alta di Francia , sorge su una rocca secca: nella

cittadella di Vauban i pozzi, le fontane, il fossato e i canali hanno garantito,

nei secoli, la sua sopravvivenza salvandola dal fuoco e dalla siccità.

All’interno della mura, le case alte e strette, i balconi colorati che danno sulla

valle sottostante, gli angoli dove gli innamorati si davano appuntamento, i

vicoli e i ristorantini, le porte antiche e la Piazza d’Armi aggiungono poesia a

questo luogo tutelato dall’Unesco e circondato da fortezze di grande

importanza tattica e difensiva nell’alternarsi di condottieri e sovrani.

Clavière

Varchiamo il confine in auto e ci fermiamo a Clavière, un tempo posto di

frontiera, oggi rinomata località turistica invernale.

Il colle del Monginevro, dove ci troviamo, collega i due cammini più famosi

d’Europa: quello di Compostela verso Santiago e la Via Francigena verso

Roma. Le montagne, qui, sono piene di spirito e di sentim enti umani. Da

vent’anni, su questi versanti abitati da pini, ontani e larici è tornato il lupo,

uno degli animali più affascinanti di queste regioni.

Verso il letto della Dora Riparia, la Gola di San Gervasio ospita il ponte

tibetano più lungo al mondo (408 + 70 mt) costruito pochi anni fa nel cuore

dell’orrido che si inabissa dentro la montagna. Sul monte di Seguret sono

ancora visibili le “Grotte dei Saraceni”, dove le truppe arabe si insediarono

per qualche tempo dopo aver conquistato la Spagna più di 1000 anni fa.

Per pranzo ci fermiamo al Gran Bouc (http://www.granbouc.it/), un ristorante

che ci colpisce per lo stile di Renata, la padrona di casa, e per la cucina di

Emilio, suo marito. L’equilibrio tra gli ottimi sapori e l’eleganza

dell’accoglienza ci fa sentire bene e ci accompagna per tutto il pomeriggio.

Susa

Sulla strada verso Susa, l’Ecomuseo Combano-Romean , il Parco Naturale

del Gran Bosco , tre villaggi di montagna che conservano antiche abitazioni

e fortificazioni medievali – Gad, Exilles, Chiomonte – e i vigneti di Avanà,

un vitigno autoctono che ha conosciuto una recente e prestigiosa rinascita.

La cittadina che dà il nome a una delle valli più belle del Piemonte è viva,

brulicante di persone che acquistano panettoni, focacce, grappe e vino

camminando tra monumenti ed edifici storici. Sono stati i Romani a

lasciare le tracce più significative del loro passaggio e ancora oggi è

possibile vedere parte delle antiche mura, Porta Savoia, l’arco di Augusto,

l’acquedotto e l’anfiteatro. Del Medioevo rimangono invece il Castello, i resti

di un forte, abbazie e conventi.

Ci siamo concessi una tappa al Panificio Favro, che dal 1870 produce la

Briançon



focaccia dolce più buona e rinomata della valle. I Favro da quattro

generazioni si tramandano la ricetta di famiglia che, ad oggi, rimane

inarrivata a detta di molti.

Abbazia della Novalesa

L’Abbazia intitolata ai Santi Pietro e Andrea ha una storia travagliata, che

purtroppo è costata la perdita o il deperimento di una parte importante del

suo patrimonio artistico. Il monastero nacque intorno al 700 , primo

convento benedettino di Piemonte e secondo d’Italia, su un territorio già

abitato durante l’età del ferro. Attraversò periodi di fervente attività

spirituale e commerciale , ma le scorrerie di coloro che si davano battaglia

per il predominio sulla regione, le pestilenze e i provvedimenti di diverse

autorità (dal Concilio di Trento a Napoleone) misero a dura prova la vita dei

frati benedettini prima e cistercensi poi che se ne prendevano cura.

Dopo che venne abbandonata per parecchi decenni , adibita a struttura

idroterapica e poi a collegio, ora la Provincia di Torino l’ha restituita ai

Benedettini , che la custodiscono occupandosi anche della manutenzione e

del recupero delle strutture.

In quest’isola di pace, nella quale si è passati nel corso dei secoli dalla vita

eremitica all’ospitalità, la cappella di San Nicola e Sant’Eldrado è

sicuramente la parte che rapisce maggiormente i visitatori e i pellegrini che

decidono di scoprirla: gli affreschi, databili tra il 1060 e il 1070, avvolgono gli

ospiti con colori brillanti e storie lontane, lasciando storditi per l’intensità.

Susa




Nel 983 il Conte Ugone di Montboissier cercava redenzione, e scelse di

costruire un’abbazia. Scelse lo sperone roccioso del Monte Pirchiriano

probabilmente per la sua tradizione eremitica e il prestigio culturale di questa

zona, passaggio di pellegrini di alto rango.

La leggenda narra che furono gli angeli a portare il materiale per

l’edificazione sulla cima del Monte Pirchiriano, facendo capire al Conte che

quello era il luogo prescelto da Dio: la consacrazione avvenne con fulmini e

fuoco. Michele, capo degli angeli, è l’arcangelo guerriero che ha sconfitto il

drago (il male) che dava battaglia a Dio: una sovrapposizione perfetta con le

divinità battagliere dei pagani che avevano abitato queste regioni.

La Sacra è costruita in verticalità assoluta, esattamente intorno e sopra la

vetta rocciosa della montagna, tanto che il culmine della stessa è segnalato

all’interno della chiesa come “Culmine vertiginosamente santo”.

L’abbazia non è solo il simbolo del Piemonte e un punto importantissimo

della Via Francigena, ma è anche una tappa del Cammino Micaelico che da

Gerusalemme porta in Irlanda su un asse perfetto che passa da Monte

Sant’Angelo nel Gargano e Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandia.

Contemplando la valle sottostante dalla terrazza della Sacra, si sente tutta

d’un fiato la potenza, l’energia e l’orgoglio di questo luogo battezzato col

fuoco e scelto dagli angeli.

Precettoria di Sant’Antonio di Ranverso

Camminando a piedi da Avigliana lungo la Strada Antica di Francia, ci si

addentra nella campagna verso la Frazione di Buttigliera Alta, fino ad

arrivare alla deliziosa Precettoria di Sant’Antonio di Ranverso, grande punto

di riferimento storico per tutte le persone in viaggio tra Roma e Santiago di

Compostela.

Qui infatti un ospizio per pellegrini voluto da Umberto III di Savoia (il Beato

Umberto) si trasformò in un vero e proprio luogo di cura per gli afflitti dal

Fuoco di Sant’Antonio . Gli Antoniani, chiamati anche “Cavalieri del Fuoco

Sacro”, mantenevano la Precettoria coltivando la terra ed allevando gli

animali e impararono a utilizzare il grasso di maiale come em olliente per

alleviare il dolore delle piaghe provocate dall’herpes zoster. Grazie a

questa nobile funzione, il maiale divenne in tutto il torinese una sorta di

animale in grazia di Dio, che aveva la libertà di circolare libero per paesi e

città, nutrito e dissetato da tutti.

Forse per donare grazia ad un luogo che nascondeva molta pena tra le sue

mura (vi venivano anche ospitati gli ammalati di peste), l’esterno della

Pilgrim’s menu



precettoria è articolato ed elegante : le decorazioni in cotto, i pinnacoli, la

regolarità acuta delle geometrie donano una raffinatezza inaspettata per un

luogo di questo tipo, accresciuta dalla bellezza degli affreschi

cinquecenteschi del presbiterio, ad opera di Defendente Ferrari.

Torino

Torino conserva poco del fascino medievale Francigeno.

Alessandra Masino, la nostra guida, ci aiuta ad affinare lo sguardo per

scoprire Torino sottopelle.

Mille anni fa questa città era un luogo di transito e le mura racchiudevano un

piccolo agglomerato urbano di cui oggi rimane ben poco. Camminiamo nelle

strette vie del centro dove ancora si respira un’at mosfera intima, alla

ricerca di uno stato d’animo che in qualche modo ci leghi ai pellegrini di un

tempo.

Cerchiamo mura, archi, mattoni, porte di accesso, guadi, chiese, antichi

tribunali, tracce di roghi, case con tetti di paglia: un mondo fatto di immagini

che in parte scoviamo e in parte ricreiamo.

Pranziamo al ristorante Quanto Basta (http://www.quantobastaristorante.it),

dove ogni cosa è fatta in casa, e gustiamo carni forti dai sapori delicati: il

Piemonte profuma di elegante qualità.

Il nostro è stato un percorso fatto di momenti.

Bello percorrere questo tratto di Via Alta con voi.

I pellegrini cercano sé stessi nel cammino, ma spesso incontrano belle persone con

cui camminare e con cui condividere un pezzetto di vita.
