£ 0 DMemories soon fade a"ay.

A year book in a ,en,e pre.

serveh these memories. It i~

more than a mere mem..

ory book. It is the embodi.

ment of an ideal, service; the

incarnation of a principle,

fidelity; the interpretation of

a spirit, the intangible. It is

with this hope that the staff

submits this, the seventh

volume of the Yonahian.

At first these lIny seeds and bulbs were very tender not being accustomedto those hurncanes foolIShly peculiar to great places of learning. Thus In fighting their coemles and WIth the help of the rain and sun com·monly called the "Faculty." the Freshmen grew and waxed strong unr" theirperfume was Inhaled to the farthest corner of the campus.

On the occasion of the hnstmas party the Freshmen were filled Withexceeding great JOY when they looked Into the faces of the SophomoresanxIOus because of the non ·appearance of the banner which was In the possessionof the SenIors. Since all flowers like to nod and sway to the breezes the Freshmen contnbuted to the stunts of the evening by an old-fashioned square dance

Jn their second year when the fto\v~rs had grown In Wisdom Jnd wefecalled ··Sophomores." the whole garden was beset WIth pests which came Inswarms. These pests were called "Freshmen Insects" rhey c1J1med to havetaken the place of the Freshmen flowers of the precedIng year but the gods pItysuch creatures who pretend to possess the attnbutes of flowers when they areonly droves of Insects bent on seekIng the hearts of illy·whlte blossoms for

The Sophomores dramatized one of DIckens' hnstmas stones for theannual party because flowers are espeCIally assoclJted WIth hnstmas tIme

And the Sophomores thnved under their leader James wlnq- whom thew,nd could not bend nor the storms elestroy and whom they were ready to

Ever WIll there be in the hearts of the Sophomores the memory of thosetwo who were taken by death from their mldsl. Ralph Payne and, !arthaMinter Only the purest elle young and God wanted these two In the freshness

The J. S. Green Society has just passed its thirtieth year.h is old enough to include among its present members a son ofone of the men who drew up its charter in 1897. We like to

feel that the society has rendered thirty years of service to

Piedmont. and it is interesting to note how the fundamentalideas of the founders have been preserved amid much inevitablechange.

If the men of 1897 came back today-and they would bevery welcome-they would find that the J. S. Green Society hasbecome much more than a debating society. \Vhile the interestin debating has not been los(, the society has widcne-d its scopeto include the literary and social interests of its members. As anevidence of this. the society presenred for its thirtieth anniversaryprogram a clever dramatization of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. HYdeby one of its own members. Stanley Stevens. The acting of

orman Bailey in the dual-personality role. and of Grady Spratlin as "Mr. Unerson," deserves special praise. Miss RuthJones was inlroduced as sponsor. Our thirtieth year gives everypromise of a future which shall build worthily on the past.
