P I E D M O N T R O A D C H U R C H O F C H R I S T the Scroll 1 The Bible says, "And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him" (Gen. 5:24). What a memorial! I cannot think of a greater complement than if someone said, “That Neil Richey, he walks with God”? Though we may never be commended on this side of eternity for our faithfulness, we still must walk with God now if we have the hope to walk with him then. When I think about those who, like Enoch, are seeking to walk with God, I cannot help but think of the following: 1. The mommas who are faithful keepers of the home. They know that their first mission field is the home. They raise children to love God, and help their husband to do the same (Tit. 2:5). 2. The dads who are raising their boys to be real men. They show their sons how to treat women with respect, work hard, and always put the kingdom first (Eph. 6:4). 3. The unknown preacher. The one who's never invited to hold Gospel meetings, speak on lecture series, or write for "major" publications. They dig in day after day in their church work, and the local congregation and community are better because of him (1 Tm. 4:16). 4. The known preacher. The preachers who are "in demand." Without these men, we'd be bereft of scores of tremendous materials that supplement our studies. Without these men, young preachers would miss opportunities to listen to skillful presentations, and learn from a variety of stylistic approaches to sermon delivery (2 Tm. 2:2). 5. Elders and deacons who know their responsibilities and understand their qualifications. Today, it's such a challenge to find men who will step up and serve in these areas. We need more men who will faithfully carry out such responsibilities (1 Tm. 3:1-13; Acts 20:28). Of this there can be no doubt, our day of standing before the Judge is coming. The question is, will we be able to walk with God? It depends on whether or not we’re walking with him now. —Neil Richey Our Purpose in Life is to “Glorify God” Our Elders: Mike Adams, Tim Feltner (Shepherd of the Month- Mar.), Roger Winslett Our Deacons: Eric Aguirre (Lads to Leaders), Steve Brandt (Youth), Derek Brown (GSOP/GA Missions), Sim Christie (Benevolence), Dino Drain (Security/Technology), Tom Eickmeyer (Business/Contracts), John Golden (Worship), Hunter Hughes (Member Involvement/Community Outreach), Scott Ihle (Foreign Missions), Lance Leavens (Education/HOME), Chris Vance (Grounds), Josh Zahrndt (Building) Times of Assembling: Sunday, 9:30 a.m. Bible Study, 10:30 a.m. Worship, 5:00 p.m. Worship Wednesday, 7:15 p.m. Bible Study Office Contact Info: Office Phone: 770.971.9933 Office Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00-1:00 Web Address: www.LifeInChrist.com Our Staff: David Decker (GSOP Director) [email protected], 770.656.3979 Kelly Drain (Office Administrator) [email protected], 770.971.9933 Lance Leavens (Involvement Minister) [email protected], 678.809.2986 Neil Richey (Pulpit Minister) [email protected], 678.809.2984 Tommy Tidwell (Marietta Campus Director) [email protected], 770.365.2133 Susan recently shared a blog with me written by Charlene Notgrass. The title of the blog was It Doesn’t Matter what a Child Can Do if He Won’t. The article started out focusing on how children grow in their “list of can do’s”. This is their list of accomplishments as they grow and develop. As the title of the article implies though, it’s not what a child can do but what they actually do. It doesn’t matter if a child knows how to tie their shoes, brush their teeth, get dressed, etc. if they won’t do it. She eventually made the jump from children to adults in this line of thinking. As I read her article, I was struck by the truth in what she was saying. Since my role focuses on church involvement, I couldn't help but think of how true this is in our church lives. Many of us have skills that we put to use in our secular jobs but fail to use those same skills in serving the Lord. We may even have skills we have used in the past and have stopped using them. “And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment” (Mk. 12:30). Our love for God should impact every aspect of our lives. How do we demonstrate that love? Ultimately, it should be demonstrated in our work and service for Him. “Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work” (Jn. 4:34). The very thing that sustained Jesus (His “food”) was working and doing the will of His Father. We can have a list a mile long of things we are capable of doing. That list doesn’t mean much if we aren’t actually doing them. We need workers. Let’s all consider some things we can do and maybe aren’t doing. Then let’s start using those talents for the Lord. —Lance Leavens 75 Weekly Church Bulletin Volume 66/Issue 8 February 23, 2017 the Scroll

The Bible says, "And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took  him" (Gen. 5:24). What a memorial! A Good Tune UpJoe W. Nichols

The Georgia School of Preaching & Biblical Studies

“…though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered” (Heb. 5:8).

What a remarkable statement. The Lord “learned.” This thought is even more significant when one considers Paul’s words, “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past

finding out!” (Rom. 11:33). The same God who possesses all wisdom and knowledge could “learn” obedience through His sufferings. What an amazing consideration.

Learning is truly a life’s journey. It begins far earlier than K-12, and continues far beyond B.A., M.A. and PhD. Paul wrote of the vastness of God’s storehouse of learning in Colossians 2:1-3, “For I want you to know what a great conflict I have for you and those in Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh, that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

It is both challenging and thrilling to know that God possesses all knowledge. Not only does He know everything about us (Ps. 139), Our Father knows everything about everything. This is one of the reasons why learning His Word, and about His creation, are such rewarding pursuits.

But, learning comes with a price. Namely, “diligence” (2 Tim. 2:15). It is an everyday quest to learn and grow in the knowledge and understanding of anything - especially those things that are eternal in nature.

A personal challenge in the journey of discipleship is to maintain the goal of learning one new thing every day. Through reading, study, observation, conversation, listening, and investigation it is truly amazing to consider the things that can be learned.

Knowledge need not be merely the accumulation of random facts. Rather, it is the learning of important things that brings growth, richness of life, and a maturity that will likely never manifest itself alone. Job said of himself, “I have treasured the words of His mouth, More than my necessary food” (Job 23:12).

If we set for ourselves the perpetual goal of learning at least one new thing every day, the blessing to our lives will be inestimable. Especially if those “new” things are about God. And, as a result we will continually add to the library of things that we are able to share with others.

It is often said by Christians that there is a proverbial list of things that, when they finally get to heaven, they plan to ask God the Father, Jesus, Paul and Peter. Why not begin searching out those things long before that day? Most of us would be surprised at all that could be learned - if only we would pay the price that each step of the journey demands.
