True beauty, purpose, and satisfaction in marriage come when we reflect the true nature of the One that satisfies us completely and eternally. Jesus gives the purest picture of the life we are to live in marriage, showing that life blossoms when we use our lives to serve rather than be served (Mark 10:43–45; Luke 13:14–16). By his life and death, Jesus displays the center of marriage as self-sacrifice. Looking to his example, we must give our lives away for our husband or wife, not fight so hard to preserve ourselves (Matthew 16:25). —Jake Sutton

7Weekly Church Bulletin February 20, 2020

It has been said that everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die. It can be said the same about some marriages.

Marriage is a precious gift and can be a tremendous relationship of blessing. However, not all of our marriages are the blessing we’d like for them to be. We long for it to be right, but at the present time, it isn’t. Maybe when we married our spouse we had unrealistic expectations of what matrimony would be. Maybe its the case we make our marriage out to be more about self-gratification and less about self-sacrifice. Marriage is not to be a selfish union but a selfless union (Eph. 5:22-27). Biblically speaking “death to self” is the center of marriages gravitational pull. The world screams to you and I that we are consumers, in need of entertainment and we are due constant pleasure.

How vain. How godless.

We have a deep need for connection, deep emotional, sustaining, eternal connection. But we look in the wrong places for it. Perhaps you are looking to your imperfect spouse to fulfill your eternal need of life-giving connection. If that is the case, no wonder you find yourself tremendously let down, over and over. God has designed you with want and a constant hunger for gratification but it is to be for what He offers and in the way He offers it.

Paul exhorts believers towards a life of godliness, fueled by joy in Christ and concern for others, not personal gain and gratification (Philippians 2:1–4; Colossians 3:12–14; 1 Thessalonians 4:3–7). If this is true of how we should live toward all people, how much more toward our spouse?

True beauty, purpose, and satisfaction in marriage come when we reflect the true nature of the One that satisfies us completely and eternally. Jesus gives the purest picture of the life we are to live in marriage, showing that life blossoms when we use our lives to serve rather than be served (Mark 10:43–45; Luke 13:14–16). By his life and death, Jesus displays the center of marriage as self-sacrifice. Looking to his example, we must give our lives away for our husband or wife, not fight so hard to preserve ourselves (Matthew 16:25).
