Sony's Camilleri optimistic about digital frontier In the midst of the digital evolution of the music

industry at both the record company and retail levels, Rick Camilleri, president of Sony Music

Entertainment Canada, is surprisingly enthused about the possibilities of the new technology being made available. There is some concern in the

industry however, over the obvious threat presented by MP3, described as "a sophisticated PC -based

digital re-recording technology." Camilleri explains "It's all just part of the

digital evolution of the music business, you can look at all of the new technologies as either a threat or a

great opportunity. "Either way it's going to instigate and

stimulate a tremendous amount of change in our industry. I suppose if you wanted you could get

extremely depressed and consider it an overwhelming threat, I just look at the digital

frontier as an enormous opportunity . "It means our business is going to change

a new challenge and one that could fuel major changes within the industry. Camilleri was asked

how he was preparing to address this new challenge. "We're all preparing for the age of digital

distribution, the marketing of distribution and communication of what we do on-line and in digital

format. " Camilleri was asked if the industry was

prepared to go on-line to sell product. "I think at the appropriate point in time.

There's no fixed date right now. We'll have to be ready to compete or at least meet and serve the needs of the digital economy. If that means servicing

consumers on-line -- or record stores or retailers on-line because that's what they demand and what

the consumers demand, then we will have to be

ready to deal with it." With recordable music available on-line,

Camilleri was asked if that would have a negative effect on exsistng retailers?

"Not necessarily," says Camilleri. "I think our retailers are in no different position than we are today, and that is that all the existing players on the industry are facing new forms of competition and new demands from their customers based in

terms of what they want as well as technological challenges that can either serve to be enormous

threats if you ignore them or enormous opportunities if you decide to grab hold of them. I don't think

traditional retailers are in any different position than we are, in terms of the challenges they have or the

opportunities."

RCMP intercepts bootleg recordings The RCMP's Milton, Ontario detachment, with the

cooperation of the CRIAAnti-Piracy office and the CMRRA conducted an investigation in Halifax with

regard to the importation from Europe of suspect bootleg recordings. A shipment of these recordings was intercepted

and controlled deliveries of five subsequent shipments were monitored by the RCMP who

subsequently seized 1,600 sound recordings with a street value estimated at CDN$104,000. The

importer had declared a value of $8,000 to Canadian Customs. No names have been released as the

investigation continues with charges pending. G.Ken Thompson, Vice President and General

Counsel of CRIA, pointed out that bootleg recordings "are unauthorized and therefore unlawful recordings of live concert performances and studio outtakes." He went on to stress that under Canada's

Copyright act, which was recently amended, performers have new rights which protect their

performances. "Bootleg recordings are an infringement of a performers' copyright and the

unlawful importation into and sale of these recordings in Canada are damaging to the performers and their record companies."

Thompson further elaborated that bootleg recordings, which are often found for sale in

speciality record shops, command high prices because of supposed scarcity. It's been found however, that the quality of these recordings is often

substandard and reflects badly on the creative talents of the recording artists that are unlawfully

exploited by the manufacturers of bootleg recordings.

It's been reported that bootleg recordings account for approximately US$5 billion in lost sales

videos, taking action on behalf of its members to enforce their rights.

with Elvira CapreeseShocking news from radio??? A major, and Imean MAJOR radio station in a major, and again Imean MAJOR market is about to announce a major, and yes, I mean MAJOR change in personnel. Itwasn't a very happy camp as the boss made hisdecision. No discussion. The decision was final. Areplacement will be named, maybe before you readthis. (EC: At least there will be a replacement! ! !)

Country acts on the block??? With all themerging and downsizing going on, it's given a fewrecord companies the opportunity to clean out someof the non -producing acts. As the majors shed em,the independents will pick 'ern up . . for a song.(EC: You roll with the punches and go where theywant you!!!)

The Globe And Mail came through!!! Whileall the other dailies are crucifying Sheila Copps fordoing her job in protecting Canada's culture,Canada's national newspaper, the Globe and Mail, came through as a responsible supplier of news andprotector of things Canadian. It's too easy to panderto the great elephant to the south who willeventually gobble up everything that's Canadian, including our water, except Quebec where theywork every day to preserve and promote theirculture. Thanks to last Monday's edition of theGlobe and Mail, we have a better understanding ofwhat we're up against. Will we bear up under thesabre rattling and threats from Washington? If weread more positive editorials on how to retain ourculture, we just might begin feeling proud to beCanadian. (EC: Is the Speaker's Corner next onthe agenda???)

Go get 'ern Sheila!!! Sheila should sue thebastards! This is war! If the SI split is allowed, thereis a lineup of other magazines who are ready todump their foreign propaganda into Canada at ahuge profit. That door should never be opened andif we behave like cowards and wimps . . . whoknows what will be next! On the other hand, whynot just become part of that whole thing? (EC: Iguess that's next!!!) Fight Sheila! Fight! Those wererather flattering pictures! (EC: Chauvinist Pig!!!)

CRTC protects us!!! If it wasn't for the CRTC,we would have all kinds of monopolies! We wouldhave the same people controlling too much of thethought in this country! (EC: You mean they're on our side???)

Confirm or deny!!! Is there a rumour that TheNew York Times and USA Today are both lookingat split runs of a daily for Canada? That will givethe dailies even more competition! Been on a bus lately??? Hilarious, improv-likehumour. That's what The Number 14 is all about .. . everyday experiences going to work and cominghome or going out for the evening . . . on the bus. It's a Canadian production out of Vancouver anddamn clever. The cast of six costume change soquickly you would think there was a dozen of them.Very creative masks, which is rather unique for thistype of theatre. If you don't get caught up on thehumour immediately, check out your neighbours.Chances are they'll be rolling in the aisle. Niceclean family humour. Better hurry up. It's a limitedrun at Toronto's Royal Alexandra Theatre to Feb.6. It's a David and Ed Mirvish production. I don't

With the word "free" being used over and over again when it comes to downloading, Camilleri

addressed the possibility of monitoring and enforcing copyright and mechanical royalties. "I think right now there is no doubt there's

a lot of use of music on-line that isn't being paid for and obviously that is a concern. In our industry

you need to talk about the evolution of intellectual property rights. More importantly the enforcement

of those rights as we have in the past." He explains further "It's no different than pirated bootleg tapes

in the '60s and '70s. There always has been and it seems there always will be, people who will want

to use music in whatever medium it exists for free. They don't want to pay for it. That has always been

a challenge for our industry and will continue to be

. . .

and we are just going to have to address it. The only difference is the use of the music is just now

in a different form." He elaborates with: "It's a new challenge

but it's the same old battle . . .

you have people who want to use your music for nothing. Today's

technology enables people to utilize music and not pay for it. Technology could also be a part of the

solution. There is going to be digital encoding, almost like digital fingerprints, where you will be

able to trace their origin. All of those security technologies being put in place will be a help, which

will be a method of policing." Camilleri has been a major player in

addressing the new technology, particularly the advent of MP3, but he's not acting alone.

"Well certainly I have had a lot of discussions with various people in the industry

about the importance of what is going on. We would love to work in concert with government and the

industry and all of these corporate people in terms of rights and the evolution of intellectual properties

RPM - Monday February 1, 1999 -

and with the industry in terms of piracy, this, that and the other. Obviously all of us have to do our own preparations

. . . so we will be doing both."

Although the dailies are just recognizing the invasion of the digital frontier and the sale of

music on-line right now, Camilleri revealed that the industry and particularly Sony had been gearing up for it for some time.

"We have been working on the digital frontier for over three years, so for me personally

in this company. we started aggressively working and dealing with the technological hurdles some

time ago. Our first BBS site, which was part of the initial learning curve, went live in January 1994.

And now we sit here in January 1999 . . .

we've been working on it for five years."

Camilleri indicates his optimism with: "I choose to look at the digital frontier as the great

horizon and I choose to look at it as a huge opportunity."

CHUM's Waters first broadcaster to receive WG award Veteran broadcaster Allan Waters, Chairman and

President of CHUM Limited, is the first broadcaster to be inducted into the "builders" section of the

Canadian Music Hall of Fame as this year's recipient of the Walt Grealis Special Achievement

Award. Waters, described as "a broadcasting visionary,

innovator and pioneer," fought for the recognition of Canadian talent, but against any hint of

censorship or dictatorial edicts from government agencies. He was revered as a benevolent adversary

who was always out front with his objections, yet leaving an open door for further discussion.

Waters allowed his programming people the freedom to choose whatever direction they believed

was right in promoting Canadian recordings but never to the detriment of the listening audience.

Cancon recordings in the early days of legislated radio. In 1969 Waters brought J.Robert Wood into

Allan Waters

CHUM as program supervisor to liaise with the recording industry. It was Wood who instigated the

Maple Leaf System (MLS) which was launched in June of 1969 (RPM

- June 23, 1969) an important,

however short-lived national campaign whereby participating broadcasters from coast to coast would

pick new Cancon releases and give them simultaneous exposure. All, of course, under the

watchful eye of Allan Waters, who preferred to remain in the background.

Even to this day, the CHUM empire (CHUM Radio Network), maintains its original commitment

to Cancon on its 24 radio stations and six television stations across Canada, and through its major

involvement in MuchMusic, MuchMoreMusic, MusiquePlus, MusiMax, Space, ACCESS Alberta,

Pulse 24 and Bravo speciality channels. Although a very shy man, Waters is no stranger

to honours and tributes. He received the RTNDA President's Award in 1986 followed in 1988 with

his induction into the Canadian Association of Broadcast Hall of Fame, and in 1992, in recognition

of his "significant contribution to compatriots, community and Canada," he was awarded the

Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation. In 1993 Waters was

honoured with the Canadian Association of Broadcasters' Gold Ribbon Award for Broadcast

Excellence. Waters will be presented with the Walt Grealis

Special Achievement Award at the 28th Anniversay Juno presentation on March 7.

Sony Wonder's Easter begans in January Sony Wonder is preparing what is described as "the most Egg -citing Easter ever," and they picked

January, one of the worst weather months in a century, to launch its Easter campaign.

Show Me The Bunny, a retail campaign is now underway to make Easter video retailing easy with

one -stop shopping for retailers who can order Easter-themed, colourful pre -packs to decorate their

stores this spring. The eye-catching pre -packed merchandisers

are available in counts of 36 and 48 units. Free with each pre -pack purchased is a plush bunny,

expected to add even more value to the promotion. It was also pointed out that Sony Wonder took

into consideration customers with long lead times with an early Easter campaign that solicited Nov.

11/98 (orders due Feb. 11/99). Videos with six English titles and one French title will go to retail

on March 9/99. These titles are: Here Comes Peter Cottontail; Precious Moments: Simon The Lamb;

Richard Scarry - The First Easter Egg Ever; The Velveteen Rabbit; The Beginner's Bible - The Story

of Easter; Richard Scarry - Le Premier Oeuf de Paques; and the brand new Madeline And The

Easter Bonnet. The latter Golden Books animated classic based on popular books by Ludwig

Bemelmans is the same Madeline character who won everyone's hearts in last years theatrical hit.

In other related news Sony Wonder reports that Caillou, regarded as Quebec"s "favourite

homegrown children's property," has shipped more than 100,000 units on each of the home video titles: Que Fait Caillou? and Ofi Est Caillou? The Sept. 1/98 releases both achieved diamond status just prior to Christmas, making Caillou Sony Wonder

Canada's fastest selling title ever. "Re -orders are still very strong coming into the new year," says

Therese Garnett, Division Head for Sony Wonder Canada, "and we do not anticipate any decrease in

the current sales momentum."

LAZAH CURRENT - Reggae/PopGlorious RideLazer Records -0001 (Trend)Born in Manchester, Jamaica and now livingin Toronto, Current proudly refers to himselfas a "Jam-Adian" artist. His album has beennominated for a Juno this year in the BestReggae Recording category. Although reggaecame natural to Current, he honed his styleand songwriting talent fronting Messenjah, aToronto reggae band he was associated withfor more than a dozen years as Hal Duggan. That was then, Glorious Ride is now withCurrent comfortably eased back into his realroots. These are all Current originals, vocallycharged with emotion and even somebenevolence. His style is intriguing, particularlyon Rasta Symphony, listen to the lyricscarefully here and Universal Love. Your Manhas been taken as the first single and video, apriceless track. But don't overlook That Smileand Ready Fi Di Ride. A pristine productionby Current and WYZ Malcolm. Recorded atToronto's Wellesley Sound Studios where itwas mastered by Don Turcotte. In-store playwill have an immediate impact. -WG

JOHNNY ADAMSA Man Of My WordRounder Records -11661-2155It's good to have Johnny Adams back after ayear or more's absence caused by indifferenthealth. His voice is as full as ever and stillpossesses the mellowness often lacking insome soul singers. We can write that each ofthe thirteen tracks are worthwhile but you'rebest to read the excellent liner notes of LenRomano for a more significant insight. We'lladd only that multiple listeners should considerboosting the treble response to catch all of thelyrics caressed byAdams' coffee rich tones. -BW

DANILO PEREZ - JazzCentral AvenueImpulse/Universal-279-JAt the very least, Dan i lo Perez excitesnervously as he pushes the envelope of jazzexpression close to the edge. At his best, he'sevocative of Ellington and Strayhorn whoseLush Life is the centre piece here thoughprobably unintentionally. That honour wouldseem to have been intended for the threemovement Rhythm in Blue Suite in which Perezfirmly establishes himself as a composer

worthy of watch as well as one of today's finestjazz pianists. -BW

DEEP RUMBA - RumbaThis Night Becomes A RumbaJustin Time -1024 American ClaveWell, it's a long way removed from the longago tarted up Latin American rhythms of XavierCugat or Enric Madriguera. Certainly what you

hear here isn't dance music for the ballroomfloor. This is relentless percussion with onlyoccasional forays into melody. The players aresophisticated but the spirit of what they play isdecidedly primitive and ... exciting as hell. Tryit. You'll like it. Warranted. -BW

JOHN PATITUCCINowConcord Jazz -4806 (St. Clair Ent.)That egalitarianism is the rule in jazz isdemonstrated here as Mr. P., a bassist, is upfront with a skilled combo of tenor sax, guitarand drums. That skill doesn't always equatewith artistry is also demonstrated. Though wellintended, the compositions are uniformly dull, unimaginative and ultimately irritating.Borrowing from baseball parlance; good field,no hit. -BW

BRAD MEHLDAU - JazzSongs/The Art of the Trio Vol. 3Warner Bros -47051-PIn Paris one can eat a potato prepared in anynumber of ways; all of them delicious but noneof them tasting like a potato. Pianist BradMehldau can arrange and play songs in myriadwondrous ways; all of them pleasant to hearbut none of them sounding like their originalmelodies. To be fair, many of the compositionsheard here are his own originals and melodic

assessment of them is perhaps unfair. We arefamiliar however, with Bewitched, Botheredand Bewildered, the enchantingly lovely ForAll We Know and Young At Heart and can attestthat as performed here they're virtuallyunrecognizable after a few opening bars. Thelate Hazel Scott used to do that with a showpiece performance she called Find The Melodybut dammel, she always did in the closingpassages. Mr. Mehldau however, still seemsto be reading Heine somewhere off in China(with apologies to Ira Gershwin). He is a skilledmusician and his work is, at the very least, tobe appreciated and even admired. We suspectthough, most listeners will find little to like. -BW

B.B.KINGBlues On The BayouMCA -11879-JIn his liner notes B.B.King writes "Found someold songs. Wrote some new ones. Got to thestudio about 11 a.m. and recorded until we gottired. Working that way, the record (all fifteentracks) was cut in just about four days. All live, all real. No overdubs, no high tech tricks. Justbasic blues." To which, one can only add afervent Amen! This might well be King'sdefinitive album. Though nominally stated asBlues, his music and performances of it is ahybrid of Soul and Blues. It's exuberant, notdolorous and expressive without ever beingcathartic. It is, as we choose to call it, HappyBlues. Hence the cut line. -BW

RED HOT RHAPSODY - PopularVarious ArtistsAntilles -314-557-788-QWith insouciance evidently engendered out ofignorance that approaches insult, the advancematerial for this album proclaims "the basicsong structure that Gershwin transcended hasbecome so obscure (sic) that today it is hardto understand the sophistication of hiscompositions." Uh huh. So it is that 18 currentpop favourites have taken it upon themselvesto present Gershwin in a new, one supposes, relevance. It doesn't work. Gershwin simply

doesn't morph convincingly into R&B, hip -hop,trip -hop and world music. The only cuts worthmention are those of Pope bashing SineadO'Connor singing Someone To Watch Over Meand David Bowie doing Foggy Day. The firstcan't sing worth a damn but at least she treatsher material with respect as does David Bowie. All else are simply curiosity pieces andrecommended only as such. An addedincentive for customers is that proceeds fromsales will go to support AIDS research -BW

THE BEST OF FRIENDS

JOHN LEE HOOKERThe Best of FriendsPointblank -7243-48424-FJohn Lee Hooker is the consummate bluesman. So into his work is he that he's frequentlyat his best solo. Here though, he's joined by anumber of obvious acolytes including EricClapton, Ry Cooder, Los Lobos, Van Morrison,Carlos Santana, Ike Turner (!) and Bonnie Raittamong several others. Their contributions arejust that . . . contributions. The album, asalways, most properly belongs to John Lee.Still, one decidedly enjoys Miss Raitt's vocalriffing. -BW

- Blues

ALBUM PICKSKYPiece Of ParadiseEMI -94210-FA very creative, polished and highly professional pop band, with squeaky -clean R&Bovertones that impacts immediately. Love Song, taken as the follow-up single to SomeKinda Wonderful, is perhaps best representative of this pair's entrancing and perhapsunique approach to their craft. The Montreal duo are only volunteering first names; Antoineand James, who are multi -instrumentalists and they know the territory when it comes tosongwriting. They cleverly manage to layer their sound, whether by design or accidenttouching a nerve on each track with their sensitive and youthful vocal projection thatprovides a comfortable wrap -around for their song message, not easy to do. They'vebeen together since 1992 and obviously work off one another but fit nicely like hand andglove. Although they also have producer credits for their previous works, they brought ininternationally -known producers PeterMokran, whose credits include MichaelJackson and R. Kelly, and Euro-SyndicateProductions whose members include TheBerman Brothers with some prettyimpressive credits, Joe Copeland and JoeWest. Half the album was produced by Euro-Syndicate at New York's Gallery Studios, from which came Love Song. Also key is AllI Want, a soft 'n easy ballad. But don'toverlook America, also heavily popinfluenced, described as "the pursuit of theAmerican Dream." Their session withMokran took place at Toronto's Metalworks, leaning more to urban material. "No rapping, but phat, chunky bass and beats," is howSky describes what they were looking for and obviously got. Key here is the gospel -tinged You And I, Shave, a duet with Dubmatique guest vocalist Dessy Di Lauro and I WillSurvive, co -written with John Acosta formerly of Acosta/Russell. -WG

Juno nominations brighten Canadian star system

An increase in multiple Juno nominations this yearsends out a signal of an established recordingindustry with a star system that more than servesthe need of the culturati.

As Pierre Juneau, the first Chairman of theCRTC so aptly put it when he announced the Canconruling for radio: " . . . the prophets of doom, themessengers of mediocrity will be overwhelmed bythe new generation of competent, creative, confidentartisans and by all those of preceding generationswho have already demonstrated their freshness ofmind, their talent and their capacity for inspiredleadership." (RPM - June 6, 1970).

The multiple nominations are led by CelionDion with seven, including the InternationalAchievement Award which she will receive at thisyear's award presentations; four each for BarenakedLadies, Matthew Good Band and Kevin Parent;three each for Jann Arden, The Philosopher Kings,
