Izzy calls to order the weekly meeting of the Alliance Moral Superheroes. Ace, always super-accountable, checks to see that everybody is in attendance. “Hmmm,” he says, shaking his head, “where’s Moe?”

“Moe is exercising at the gym,” says Izzy. “He texted me on my iphone that he’ll be late to our meeting. You have an iphone?” asks Fin.

Page 5: PICTURING THE GOLDEN RULE

PAGE 2

“And look,” says Izzy, “Moe texted me a selfie lifting the heaviest barbell at the gym!” Everybody gathers around her to see the picture. Moe is super-strong!

“Integrity Phone,” replies Izzy. Izzy’s super power is integrity, which means being respectful, honest, fair, and always doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.

Ashanti starts to walk home, talking on her phone, having waited at school until a big rainstorm ended.

On the other side of the city, Midwestern elementary school is done for the day and all the students are headed home.

PAGE 4

Damon gazes at the sky and says, “Wow, Bennie, look…a rainbow!” Bennie quickly pulls his iphone from his backpack. “I’ve got to get a picture! It’s awesome!”

On the other side of the street, Ashanti’s classmates, Bennie and Damon, started home too.

Now Ashanti’s yellow clothes are totally covered with muddy water and a couple of fast food wrappers blown up from the road. Ashanti is a mess!

in the street next to Ashanti is a big puddle of rain water left over from the storm. In the exact moment bennie was taking pictures of the rainbow, the school bus zoomed past Ashanti and sprayed her with muddy water.

Noticing that Bennie and Damon captured the picture of Ashanti getting soaked with muddy water, Un thought of a thoroughly mischievous idea.

Flying through the air, doing his usual no-good antics, Un, the arch enemy of the Alliance Moral Superheroes, flies up behind a startled and soaking wet Ashanti.

Page 10: PICTURING THE GOLDEN RULE

PAGE 7

“Uh, oh,” says Ace. “I see that trouble-maker, Un…and it looks as if he is headed somewhere to cause more trouble again!”

Back at the Superheroes’ clubhouse, the Trouble Alarm goes off, as it seems to do every week during the meetings.

Page 11: PICTURING THE GOLDEN RULE

PAGE 8

“I feel sorry for her,” says Damon, holding the iphone. “What if we were walking by that puddle when the bus drove past? We’d be all muddy, just like Ashanti.”

As Bennie and Damon reviewed the shots of the rainbow, they noticed in the last one Ashanti getting soaked by the school bus. “Oh, poor Ashanti! Wow, she looks like a total mess!” says Bennie.

Page 12: PICTURING THE GOLDEN RULE

PAGE 9

“What? It’s a great idea,” says Un. “Everyone will make fun of Ashanti and they will think you’re the funniest kid in 4th grade!”

Un flies down beside Bennie and says, “Bennie, text that photo of Ashanti to everybody in your class. It will give your friends a big laugh!” Damon looking concerned says, “That might not be a good idea.”

Page 13: PICTURING THE GOLDEN RULE

PAGE 10

“Who cares about Ashanti’s feelings?” says Un. “Now, text that picture to everybody!” Reluctantly, Bennie starts texting on the iphone with his thumbs.

“It’s not Ashanti’s fault she got all wet,” says Damon. “Remember, it could have been us...” Un cuts Damon off and says “But everybody will want to be your friend, after they see that picture. Just think how great that will be.”

Page 14: PICTURING THE GOLDEN RULE

PAGE 11

“Well, I wouldn’t like it, I guess.” says Bennie. “You guessed right! That would be against The Golden Rule,” says Izzy.

Before Bennie completes the text, Izzy quickly flies out of the clubhouse towards them. “Bennie,” says Izzy, “don’t text the photo. How would you like to have that done to you?”

Page 15: PICTURING THE GOLDEN RULE

PAGE 12

“You mean, I shouldn’t do something to Ashanti that I wouldn’t want done to me?” asks Bennie. “Exactly! It’s called having good ethics - knowing right from wrong.”

“The Golden What?” asks Bennie. “The Golden Rule,” explains Izzy, “Do to others only what you’d have done to yourself.”

Page 16: PICTURING THE GOLDEN RULE

PAGE 13

He begins to put the iphone into his backpack, but stops.

“Send the picture anyway, don’t listen to Izzy. She doesn’t like to have fun.” says Un. “But, I’d be breaking The Golden Rule,” says Bennie. “I can’t do that.”

Page 17: PICTURING THE GOLDEN RULE

PAGE 14

“Wow,” says Bennie, pointing his iphone at her. “Can I get a selfie with you?”

“Wait a minute, you look like a… superhero.” says bennie. “I’m Izzy,” she replies proudly. “I’m one of the Alliance Moral Superheroes.”

Page 18: PICTURING THE GOLDEN RULE

PAGE 15

But, Un didn’t hear as he was yelling louder, “I’m going to get even with you yet! I don’t believe in The Golden Rule! I like it when bad things happen!”

Izzy and Bennie turn around to see another school bus coming down the street. Un was standing in the same spot as Ashanti next to the puddle in the street. Izzy yells, “Un, watch out!”

Page 19: PICTURING THE GOLDEN RULE

PAGE 16

Izzy looks at Un, now all wet. “I hope that someday, Un, you will learn your lesson and follow The Golden Rule... or at least keep yourself dry from mud puddles.”

As the school bus drives past it sprays Un with muddy water from the street, just like what had happened to Ashanti.

Study Guide for Picturing the Golden Rule

Living Coloring Book

Objective: Students will demonstrate their understanding of the story by choosing a portion to re-enact.

Modeling: Ask three student volunteers to come to the front of the room to act out the moment when Un is trying to convince Bennie to text Ashanti’s picture to all their friends, and Damon argues against it. Get suggestions from the rest of the class about what each character might be thinking or saying during this moment. Encourage the students to make statements in the first person, as if they were the characters, too. The three volunteers at the front then act out the scene using the audience’s suggested lines.

Activity: Then divide the class into groups of three. Have them re-enact the scene that was modeled, or one of the others listed below.

• The scene when Ace, Izzy and Fin are in the clubhouse looking at Moe’s selfies. • The scene when Bennie is getting ready to text Ashanti’s picture, but Izzy flies in to stop Un. Un

tries to argue that Izzy is a loser.• The scene when Bennie takes a selfie with Izzy and gets her phone number.• The scene when Un gets splashed with mud and Izzy encourages him to follow the Golden Rule.

Make Your Own Golden Ruler

Objective: Students will create their golden ruler to serve as a reminder to choose kind behaviors.

Modeling: Create a sample to show students by taking a 12-inch piece of cardstock with the inches marked on it, and the words “The Golden Ruler” printed underneath.

Activity: Provide each student with a piece of cardstock, 12 inches long and 2 inches wide. Have them use a ruler to mark and number the inches on it. Have them print “The Golden Rule” and “Do to others only what you’d have done to yourself,” beneath the numbers. Then have them carefully squeeze a thin line of glue around the words and sprinkle gold glitter on top of the glue. Allow the glue to dry before displaying them on each student’s desk. Encourage students to use the Golden Ruler as a visual cue to avoid hurtful words and actions.

Vocabulary:

• Startled: suddenly frightened in surprise• Antics: playful or funny actions.• Mischievous: intended to do harm.• Reluctantly: with doubt or unwillingness.
