The Shoes of the Fisherman by Morris L. West

Summary: A Pope sees how the world is destructing in front of his eyes. He has spent 20 years in a Siberian labor camp. The Russian-Chinese relationships aren’t doing so well, so the Pope is released from the camp. When the Pope goes back to his country, he takes the position of a Cardinal, which means he gets to make future decisions for his country. The Pope realizes his country is starving to death, but he dies before he can make a difference. A new Pope is chosen, and he makes the difference that his past leader wanted to make. He asks the other countries to do the same, and gets rewarded for his actions.

Author Bio: Morris L. West is an Australian novelist. His best-known books are “The Devil’s Advocate” and “The Shoes of the Fisherman”. However, he was first made famous by his book “Children of the Shadows”. His books are called “religious thrillers”, most reflecting his Catholic faith. Currently living in England, there is no telling where he will go, or what West will come up with next!

Mr. President!John F. Kennedy

Kennedy was born in 1917 of Irish decent. He is currently the youngest U.S. president ever. He graduated from Harvard in 1940, and defended our country in the U.S. Naval Academy. President Kennedy has dealt with the Vietnam War, and the Cold War whilein office. The economy’s debt is increasing quickly because we are trying to help lower taxes. Our GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is ranked number 1 at $612 billion. Social issues affecting our country include: trying to avoid an atomic war, promote hope for mankind, resist the outlaws in the Congress parties, and gain control of more businesses (FBI). The American people like Kennedy due to his determination to bring better education, safer/stricter National Security, and world peace. Small groups gather

around him to praise him for his good work, but after the public found out about his many affairs while in office, people had a very different outlook on President Kennedy.

The Andy Griffith Show! The Andy Griffith Show is a comedy/family sitcom that first aired in 1960. The plot of the show is, Sheriff Andy Taylor and his son, Opie, live with their aunt in North Carolina. The small town, Maybury, isn’t the best at solving crimes until Andy and his cousin, Barney, come to town. The main characters of The Andy Griffith Show are, Sheriff Andy Taylor, his son Opie Taylor, cousin Deputy Barney Fife, and aunt Bee Taylor. I think this is a really great family show, especially if you are looking for a good laugh! It will keep you entertained the whole time you watch it, and has a lot of good comedy. I recommend this show to every family that just wants to have some good, quality family time. You will never be bored watching The Andy Griffith Show!

Roger Staubach Roger Staubach grew up in

Cincinnati, Ohio. He thought that football was his opportunity to go to college. After being accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy, he won the Heisman Trophy during his junior year (1963). He was the fourth junior to ever win the Heisman Trophy. Navy coach, Wayne Hardin said he was “the greatest quarterback Navy ever had.” Staubach’s plans for the future include finishing 4 years of the armed forces. When he finishes his service, he plans on going to the NFL to continue his football career. Staubach is all about giving everything you’ve got no matter what you are doing. – “Nothing good comes in life or athletics unless a lot of hard work has preceded the effort. Only temporary success is achieved by taking short cuts.”

Patricia Neal was born in Packard, Kentucky on January 20th, 1926. She grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee, and was first interested in acting at the age of 10 years old. After studying drama for 2 years at Northwestern University, she went to New York, New York and got a job as an understudy. Since then, Patricia has come a very long way. Neal now holds the Best Actress Oscar Award for 1963 after playing the role of Alma, the housekeeper in the movie “Hud”. This was arguably her very best role as an actress. In this movie, she played alongside Paul Newman, Melvyn Douglass, Brandon De Wilde, and many other great actors and actresses.

“A master can tell you what he expects of you. A teacher, though, awakens your own expectations.”

“I Have a Dream…”- Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. made his speech about racial discrimination just last month. He gave it at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963. The speech is all about how Negro men and women are being “crippled by the manacles of segregation”, and King has a dream that one day everyone will be truthfully equal. I believe That this speech has made a great impact on all of America. Blacks arebeing treated unfairly, and it was a great thing that King would take a stand. This speech has really opened the eyes to many people in America. We will just all have to wait and see if something changes in this horrible discrimination. A difference needs to be made, and King has put himself in great danger to stand up for something he truly believes is right. This really shows what a great person King is, because he is putting himself in harms way so that other people won’t be. You can really see now what needs to be done to stop this unfair segregation.

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

We asked Lisa Anderson, age 16, to tell us all about what it is like to be a teenager. This is what she told us… “Being a teenager in 1963 is really a lot of fun! I wear my hair as big and bushy as I can get it! It looks totally groovy that way. Everybody is doing it! Also, I go through about one and a half packs of cigarettes everyday, which puts a big dent in my gas money. Gas costs about .29 cents per gallon. It’s hard to manage all of your money when you’re buying gas for your new mustang and packs of cigarettes everyday for you and your friends. Despite all that, we are always having a blast! We love jammin’ out to cool new hits by the Beatles and The Beach Boys! My friends and I just adore them! The boys our age usually slick their hair back with some hairspray, which is so totally hot! So, basically the life of a teenager is all about hanging with friends and having the time of your life! We just ride around in my Mustang, smoke some cigarettes, and blast the music loud!
