WHAT IS PHOTOGRAPHY?

The first successful photograph was taken in 1816. These early cameras sometimes took as long as 8 hours to take a picture.

Today pictures can be taken with a cell phone, tablet or camera. It takes seconds to take a picture, see it, and send it to your family.

The art of photography however isn’t as simple. Photographers work for years on how to perfectly capture a picture. They think about light, the objects in their picture, the different colors in the picture, and many other things.

In this activity workbook we’ll share with you some of the artists who have shown their photography at Casa Romantica. Have fun!

WHAT IS CASA ROMANTICA?

Casa Romantica was built in 1927 and was the home of the founder of San Clemente, Ole Hanson. In 2001 Casa Romantica became a non-profit organization offering programs in art, dance, theater, and music.

Casa Romantica is an important place in our community for people to visit and learn about the past as well to encourage community members to explore their own creative and artistic sides with our exhibitions and activities.

...And who knows, maybe after this activity you may become an artist yourself!

Directions: On the following pages we tell you how certain artists take pictures. Then, we give you an exercise to try. You can use a cell phone, tablet or camera.

SANDRO SANTIOLI: ARCHITECTURE

Sandro is a photographer from Italy who is well known for his photos of architecture. Architecture, pronounced aar·kuh·tek·chr, is about the design and construction of a building. His photos have been published in magazines like National Geographic and shown all over the world.

When shooting architecture, Santioli pays attention to form, geometry and perspective:

Form: the shadows and highlights of 3D subjectsGeometry: basic shapes such as lines, circles, squares and trianglesPerspective: the sense of depth or space between objects

DOUGLAS KIRKLAND: PORTRAITS

Douglas is a Canadian photographer who is famous for his celebrity portraits. His pictures have been published and displayed all over the world. He’s also worked on famous movie sets like the Sound of Music, Titanic, Moulin Rouge, and The Great Gatsby.

Douglas tries to capture the person’s true emotion in that moment.

KRISTIANNE KOCH RIDDLE: NATURE & ELEMENTS

Kristianne is a photographer that was born and raised right here in San Clemente! She has shown her pictures all over the U.S.A.

Kristianne enjoys photographing nature, primarily earth and water (called elements). When looking for the perfect picture, she tries to find unique ways of viewing nature. Sometimes even getting into the water! Capturing people in nature or with elements is ok too.

STUART PALLEY: LIGHT & CONTRAST

Stuart has photographed hundreds of wildfires in California. He has photographed for magazines and newspapers like National Geographic, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the Los Angeles Times, TIME Magazine, WIRED, New York Magazine, and The Washington Post.

One of the things that Stuart looks at is how light hits different points in a picture, this is called contrast.
