Everyone’s favourite swamp-dwelling ogre will bring musical mayhem to Theatre Royal as Shrek The Musical stomps its way to the Toon.

The larger-than-life production will see the green giant, accompanied by his faithful friend Donkey, set out on a mission to rescue the beautiful (and ever so slightly miffed) Princess Fiona from the fearsome-ish clutches of the diminutive Lord Farquaad. Monstrous fun! Theatre Royal March 11-29 from £16 theatreroyal.co.uk

HIDDEN GEMThe Botanist bar and restaurant has been a big talking point here at NE1 HQ since it opened late last year (we love the tree...) and

now it’s got a new private dining area. Granny Smith’s is a shabby-chic escape which seats up to 14 people, which means it’s ideal for small parties and business meetings. Monument Mall, thebotanist.uk.com

THERE’S AN APP FOR THATMore than 5,000 iOS users have downloaded the free Hidden Newcastle app in the last three months, and now

Android users can download it too. The app, developed by Tyne and Wear Archives & Museums in conjunction with NE1 Ltd, unearths the strange, unknown and forgotten history of Newcastle with more than 75 stories. Get exploring, people! hiddennewcastle.org

WAKE ME UP

Readers of a certain age may remember Stewart Lee and Richard Herring’s Fist Of Fun sketch show, a ridiculous ‘celebration of mediocrity’ from the mid-90s. It typified Herring’s humour - a mixture of surrealism, manic sketches and dark stand-up (who could forget the entire show dedicated to reprising The Hitler Moustache?).

A prolific writer and performer, Lord Of The Dance Settee is Herring’s eleventh consecutive stand-up show and features self-deprecating tirades about his own failure and sketches filled with fabricated rage and a demanding analysis of life’s mundanities. THE WHOLE TUNE YARDSNow for something completely different…Merrill Garbus, one half of New England’s amusingly stylised tUnE-yArDs, creates wonderfully wacky indie pop with a frankly unhinged edge.

When performing live she creates drum loops layered with ukulele, electric bass and vocals to produce a stunning amalgamation of sounds veering from Worldbeat and experimental pop to RnB, freak folk and electronica. BANDS ON THE RUN

ROCKING ALL OVER THE WORLD

What do Lionel Richie, Paloma Faith, McBusted, and Usher have in common? They’re all partial to a Greggs Steak Bake.

Strange but true (ish), and presumably why they are all headed to Newcastle to play the Metro Radio Arena, though unfortunately not at the same time. What a noise that would be.

Anyhoo, smooth crooner Richie will play All Night Long on March 7; quirky songstress Faith heads to Toon on March 14; multi-limbed pop-rockers McBusted (pictured) bring their racket on March 16; and RnB superstar Usher completes the quartet on March 18. Eclectic!Metro Radio Arena, metroradioarena.co.uk

There’s no shame in loving cheesy 80s-style rock and it doesn’t get much cheesier than Europe’s The Final Countdown.

Massive choruses, rocking guitar solos, big hair - what’s not to like? Having tasted commercial success thanks to tracks like Rock The Night and Just The Way I’m Feeling, the Swedish band are considered to be masters of the glam/blues metal genre. Catch them in all their fist-pumping synth rocking glory this month. O2 Academy, March 7, £23 o2academynewcastle.co.uk

ART’S CONSCIENCE AMIDST CONFLICTA new exhibition examining art relating to the Spanish Civil War brings heavy artistic hitters, including Picasso’s Weeping Woman, to the Toon.

The 1937 painting of Picasso’s mistress Dora Maar, weeping in response to the horrors of the war, is the big highlight of a show at the city’s Laing Art Gallery, which opens on March 7 and features two etchings by Picasso and work by fellow Spaniard Joan Miró.

There are also works by British artists Henry Moore, EdwardBurra, Wyndham Lewis, and John Armstrong, together

revealing how a generation of artists were drawn to the conflict. Some artists and writers went to fight in the war themselves, while others created campaign posters and works that made fierce political statements.

The show, entitled Conscience & Conflict, is quite a coup for the Laing, offering an extremely rare opportunity to see these iconic works in Newcastle.Laing Art Gallery, from March 7 twmuseums.org.uk/laing-art-gallery

Folk music superstars Becky and Rachel Unthank are on tour and heading home to the North East on the back of their acclaimed new album Mount the Air.

Ahead of their homecoming gig at Newcastle City Hall on March 14, we caught up with Becky (pictured right) to discover more about the sisters from Ryton whose fans include songwriting god Elvis Costello, comic genius Dawn French, and Hollywood actors Martin Freeman, Colin Firth and Ewan McGregor. Who did you look up to as a child? My sister Rachel. It’s a bit sickly, but it’s true! We spent lots of our time walking around folk festivals.

What’s the best job you’ve ever had?Being in The Unthanks! Expressing myself through singing is such a constructive outlet. No matter who you are, singing is therapuetitc. It’s an act of joy, celebration, solace - whatever you want it to be.

What do you enjoy most about your career?Going to festivals! That was always our dream - to get a free ticket for doing a bit of singing.

What would you be doing if not this?I was studying History of Art with Practice when I took a year out with the band, so something along those lines. Also, I would love to be a registrar.

The best decision you’ve made?Becoming a full-time folk singer.

Who has inspired you in your life?My family, the folk world, and the world in general. I look for inspiration every day and I always find it.

What scares you the most?Loneliness. And spiders.

Who would play you in a film of your life?Someone much more beautiful and eloquent than me, but they would have to be a Geordie.

THAT’S ALL, FOLK...

GETTING TO KNOW PATRICK MONAHAN: RIHANNA-IMPERSONATOR, HUGGER, CAKE LOVER

Patrick Monahan is a self-confessed cake-lover, hugger, and telly favourite, hugging people on mid-morning sofas, on ITV’s bizarre high-diving reality show Splash, and, in an unlikely turn of events, impersonating sultry Barbadian songstress Rihanna for Sport Relief. Ahead of his gig at The Stand we corner him to talk, to eat cake, to hug, and to ask some searching questions. Here’s what he tells us...

I’m meeting you for the first time, how do I recognise you? I’ve got bushy scruffy dark hair, a big smile, a cake in my mouth, and my arms are open waiting for a hug. How do you compare to you 21-year-old self?I’m almost identical, except I have to shave every two hours instead of every two days. What would you be doing if you weren’t a comedian? I’d be at Morrisons, working the tannoy at the front of the shop. The best moment of your career to date? Performing at the Edinburgh festival, where I attempted the World Record longest hug in 2013. The best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? Play to the audience, not the dressing room. What’s your greatest fear? Gregg’s being shut. What does the future hold? More gigs, more hugs, and more cake.

What do you take on tour with you?My iPad and a big bag of sweets so that I can always stay hyper. Daytime telly. Why? My mum always has it on. She loves Judge Rinder, Judge Judy, Jeremy Kyle, Loose Women - all the good stuff. Why did you do Splash? Who wouldn’t want to jump off a 10m board in nothing but a pair of Speedos the size of a stamp? What was it like sitting next to Dame Edna Everage on Celebrity Squares? Amazing, surreal and inspiring. She is effortlessly funny. At what point did the World’s Longest Hug attempt get awkward? Just when we had to go for a wee. Most of the time it was lovely. How much did you enjoy being Rihanna for Sport Relief? She’s an icon! If I was around at the time of Marylin Monroe, I’d have been in a big white dress standing on an air vent. Opportunities like this, or dressing up as Rihanna, are not to be passed on. What do you most enjoy about your job? Talking for a living and not knowing where you’re meant to be tomorrow night. Who did you look up to a child? Dave Allen, Richard Pryor and Robin Williams, who made me think think I just wanted to talk for a living and make people happy. And hug them.

UP MARKETIt’s Monday morning and I’ve been sent back through the doors of NE1 HQ with a challenge - to eat my way around the Grainger Market. It’s a tough job, but…

The market’s come a long way from the place I remember as a kid, wandering the alleyways on a Saturday morning on our ritual family trip for a Sunday joint and, if I was good, a bag of black bullets for the bus home.

Our family’s choice of butcher, Oliver & Eden, is still going strong, with third-generation Jerry Eden now in charge. Similarly, the fishmongers

THE GRAINGER MARKET IS FAST BECOMING ONE OF THE BEST STREET FOOD SPOTS IN THE NORTH. DEAN BAILEY VENTURES FORTH FOR A BITE

and fruit and veg sellers continue to thrive, as does the Kandy Box sweet shop, no doubt assisted by my continuing weekly pilgrimage in search of bullets.

The traditional cafés remain - the fantastic Oliver’s is a must, and relative newcomer Wi-Fri is a great stop for breakfast. For coffee, Pumphrey’s is among the best in Toon, while Fez Food’s owner Ferit Ozdemir recommends a Turkish. Dipping under the counter, he completes an intricate process and produces a tiny of cup of thick, chocolatey coffee accompanied by a cube of Turkish Delight and,

for this fortunate writer, a large slice of baklava. My day is made.

A stand-out of an assignment which turns into lunch at the market every day for a week, turns out to be watching Lindsay’s To Go’s Paulo Gama cooking up noodles, chorizo, and king prawns fresh from Lindsay’s fishmongers across the alley. It’s a substantial treat, but the carton is empty by the time I roll back down the hill to the office.

Meanwhile, you’ll struggle to find a friendlier lunchtime welcome than from Julien Poulalion at La Petite Crêperie, Marco and Augustino at Pizza by

the Slice, Jerry at Oliver & Eden, and Paul at Lindsay’s. Everyone has time for a chat, a story, and the odd recipe suggestion. Jerry suggests stir-fry made with his beef and veg from J. Armstrong. Paul recommends pan-frying whiting fillets he’s brought fresh from the Fish Quay at North Shields this morning in butter. It’s a meal for two that’ll leave you with change from a fiver.

Back to my stomach, and on Tuesday, crêpes are the order of the day. The only problem is, everybody in Newcastle appears to have had the same idea and the queue is enormous. Fortunately, the salted caramel ones are well worth the wait.

Back the next day, Julien recommends a savoury crêpe

made with buckwheat flour, which makes it gluten-free for the sensitive and coeliac among you. The French classic Emmental, ham and egg variety is the daddy of them all.

In the mood for something sweet, at Pet Lamb Patisserie just round the corner we can recommend the salted caramel brownies, carrot cupcakes, peanut butter brownies, vanilla cupcakes - you get the idea.

On a flying visit, we stop by and say cìao to Marco and Augustino at Pizza by the Slice to find a huge peperroni has just come out of the oven. One massive slice, it turns out, is ample for lunch on the run.

Meanwhile, the French Oven’s highlight of the week

turns out be a chicken, chorizo and mozzarella panini recommended by manager Clement Fouquet. It’s a world away from any shop-bought sarnie, as are the giant rolls at Sloppy Joe’s, which are baked that morning and stuffed with mincemeat, onions and peppers with a variety of toppings, just like they serve in New York city.

One week hardly seems enough to get everything in, particularly when you factor in a visit to the excellent new Nan Bei Chinese dumpling bar, and an entire lunch hour spent browsing the huge range of food and drink at mmm... deli. But there’s always next week. And the week after. Meanwhile, there’s that big bag of bullets for the bus home.
