Physical and Chemical Properties

Year 1 Science

Note Expectations

• notes must be written neatly• letters should not be too BIG!• write on each line, unless instructed to

skip a line for another section• have a puke page on standby: if you

run out of room on the first page, then continue writing on the puke page (glue after the presentation!)

Top of the Page

Your notes should contain the following at the top of the page:•The essential question (EQ: What are physical and chemical properties?)•The date (2 December 2014) and page # •The title (Physical and Chemical Properties)

• Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space– Mass – the amount of matter in something– Volume – the amount of space something

occupiesSKIP 1 LINE

• Which of the following is matter?– A car?– A box?– You?

Reviewing MATTER

What is a property?

• Property: a characteristic of a substance that can be observed

• Matter can have 2 types of properties: physical and chemical

SKIP 1 LINE

Physical Property

Physical Property: a property that can be observed without changing the identity (atom arrangement) of the substance; can help identify the substance

Examples:

• melting point

• boiling point

• density

• solubility

SKIP 1 LINE

• color

•odor

•state

Special Physical Properties

• Melting point: the temperature at which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid (ex: water = 00C)

SKIP 1 LINE

• Boiling point: the temperature at which a substance changes from a liquid to a gas (ex: water = 1000C) SKIP 1 LINE

Density

• Density is the amount of mass per unit of volume; can be used to identify a substance; the density of water is 1.0g/mL or 1.0 g/cm3

SKIP 1 LINE

• Solubility: amount of solute that can be dissolved in a specific volume of solvent; depends on chemical nature of solvent and temperature; the most common solvent is water

SKIP 1 LINE

Chemical Properties

• Chemical property: a property that can only be observed by changing the identity of the substance (i.e: chemical change)

Examples:

•flammability

•ability to rust

•reactivity with vinegar

Note Review• highlight in yellow matter, mass, volume,

property, physical property, melting point, boiling point, solubility, density, chemical property

• underline in red the definitions of physical property and chemical property, the most common solvent, and the density value of water

• circle in blue the examples of physical property and chemical property

• outline Special Physical Properties in green
