1. Introduction
This document has been developed to support and implement the aims and objectives of the Physical Activity Strategy for the Isle of Man. This plan acknowledges the need to enable people to become more physically active through creating an appropriate environment supported by targeted programmes that are conducive to behavioural change. Successful partnerships are the key to achieving the collaboration necessary to improve the population outcomes, without which the aims and the vision of the Physical Activity Strategy for the Isle of Man will not be achieved. A joined-up approach is in line with the ethos of the Isle of Man Government and is vital to deliver top quality services.
2. Vision and Mission for Physical Activity on the Isle of Man The Isle of Man is a place where individuals, groups and the community can become involved in a range of physical activities for enjoyment, improved health and well-being, and stay involved to reach their full potential.
Vision
An Island where regular physical activity is part of everyday life.
Mission
To facilitate, support and encourage life-long involvement in physical activity by the population of the Isle of Man.
4
This will be achieved by:
Physical activity opportunities being accessible to all
Encouraging active travel to be the first choice for short distances
Maximising opportunities for physical activity through effective and sustainable partnerships
Providing opportunities for all in a workplace setting to take part in physical activity within their daily routine
Encouraging the use of the local environment for active recreation
Changing attitudes by raising awareness of educational, social and health benefits of physical activity.
Partner organisations are required to align their plans with the strategic aims and objectives of the Physical Activity Strategy for the
Isle of Man, in order to contribute towards building a healthy and active population.

Appendix 1 Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Outpatients Service Musculoskeletal injuries can create a barrier to participation in physical activity. If not dealt with at an early stage, injury and pain can sideline a person from activity for many weeks. Activity can be related to any part of a person’s lifestyle, from leisurely activities at home to elite sports participation. Physiotherapy aims to provide early access to assessment and advice for people across all age groups who acquire injuries that hinder their participation in their chosen activities. Early intervention is proven to hasten recovery from injury and restore the person to their optimal health potential as quickly as possible to avoid loss of fitness, decrease in motivation, and depression. Each physiotherapy intervention is an opportunity for health education. Physiotherapists also work as general specialists, being ideally placed to help those who suffer from medical conditions to safely increase their physical activity levels where previously their condition has led to their exclusion, either due to physical disability or personal choice. A safe environment for introducing such a person to exercise and movement can be provided by physiotherapists until those particular barriers to participation have been overcome and the person feels confident to continue their activity independent of medically-based support. The Physical Activity Strategy is closely aligned with the aims of The Department of Health Strategy in which early intervention for injury and disease is encouraged, along with more care in the community, and education for self-management. This approach aims to reduce the prevalence of long-term conditions and referrals into hospital.
