We have many different feelings and they all are OK! Learning to recognize how weare feeling and how to manage these feelings is important. Many Cootes’ students will be familiar with the Zones of Regulation.Parents/Guardians who would like more information on the Zones of Regulation canfind it HERE. In the Zones of Regulation there are four groups, or Zones, of feelings. This week’sactivities will help you explore these Zones and learn about some things you can doto manage feelings. Before you try the activities, look at the chart at the top of page 2 and remember what kinds of feelings are in each Zone. The Green Zone is where we feel ‘good to go’, just like a green light! To get started, watch this video clip from themovie Inside Out.

When we play games withothers we can have manydifferent feelings. We might bevery happy one minute andthen very frustrated a fewminutes later! Triggers are events thathappen or thoughts we have, that can move us out of theGreen Zone. Triggers can bother us somuch that we might even wantto stop playing the game!

Music affects your emotionsand your mood, which means italso affects what zone you arein.  Jazz is a type or genre of musicthat is all about expressingyourself, freedom, andimprovisation. This means making things upas you go. Jazz artists and musicians usewhat they see, hear and feel tomake music. When you listen to jazz songs you might notice that they make you feel happy, sad, angry or excited. In other words, jazz music canactually make you feel differentZONEs.

Maybe you will afteryou listen to the story.

These are some examples oftriggers:

When we pay attention to ourtriggers, we can reach into ourtoolbox for a strategy to use.  On page 4 is an activity thatwill help you recognize yourtriggers. Learning to manage feelings isjust like learning to read, ride abike or swim. It takes practice!

Having a laugh or giggle canmake us realize that ourproblem may not be oneanymore!! Learning to recognize howpeople are feeling can help usknow HOW to react andpossibly help them. Practice labelling feelings forcharacters in books, movies orshows. Then try it with realpeople. You can be moreempathetic if you understandwhy someone might be actingthe way they do.

I have chosen 4 songs and putthem in a Google Slideshow foryou. Click through the Google Slideshow and listen to all 4 songs.  As you listen to each song thinkabout how it makes youfeel. How does each songconnect to the Zones ofRegulation? When you are in the RED,YELLOW or BLUE zone, do youever use music to help you getback to the GREEN zone? Do you have a specific songthat can make you feel HAPPYor EXCITED?  Send me an e-mail and let meknow!

Each of us has an invisible toolbox that we carry. In the toolbox wehave tools or strategies that we can use to calm or alert ourselves to

help our self regulation.

If we encounter a trigger (an irritant that causes us to become lessregulated and increases the chances of going into the Yellow or Red

Zone), we can use a tool to get back into the optimal Green Zone.
