surprisingly quiet and calm executive.

Hailing from Sweden, Mr Bergekrans rst

came to Asia 30 years ago as a businessman

based in Hong Kong. He used to spend

his vaaions in Phke and afer 10 years

decided to move here, believing that the

beautiful, but then pretty much undeveloped

island, had enormous potential for growth

and was js he olden opporniy he

sought. Although he got off to a s lowish

sar, his insin has proven orre and

gradually his empire grew.

I started with a restaurant at rst, then

progressed to small guesthouses and

billing businesses. Gradually we grew

and grew into the hotel business. Says

Mr Bergekrans. Actually, the idea for the

hotel came originally from my nephew

with whom I discussed the possibilities.

I have to admit, I was pretty well hooked

Mr Bergekrans continued by saying that

value for money is what concerns him

the most, realizing that when selecting

a hotel, this is a signicant factor for the

public nowadays. It is not easy at the

moment, he admitted, There is a lot of

competition in this industry which is really

giving us a challenge. We have to make

sure that we are able to offer something

very speial and develop a repaion

that is second to none among our visitors.

We want them to come back, and to

spread the word about us, so we must

make sure we have done everything

within our powers to be truly 5-Star.

Helping to build the 5-Star image is apoolside club and bar, a health club

including a gym and yoga facilit ies.

A spa, gourmet restaurant, Sky bar,

I am hopeful that we will have plenty of

Milan and Paris.

Ugoliniwill be our trade name for Italian cuisine in Asiaand Watermark our name for Thai food in Europe.

Although a newcomer to the catering business,

Roberto is backed by excellent support from more

exp er ienced restaurateurs and staff, and certainly

seems to have found the secret of success in enjoying

his new vocation.

I do this for my pleasure. My restaurants are places where I can

invite my friends to come and enjoy good food and wine.

For those of you not too familiar with the location of the two marinas

and the restaurants, they are right next door to each other on the east

coast of Phuket, about 7km north of Phuket town on the Thepkrasatri

Road. Either brasserie is well worth a visit, even if only to view the

yachts whilst savouring the delightful food and drink.

Please tell us a wee bit about your culinary education?

I got a Chefs Diploma in Nocera Superiore in

Salerno Province, Campania, Italy.

Why did you want to be a chef?

Ive always enjoyed cooking and love to share

my passion and creations with other people.

Its a labour of love.

What are your favourite cooking gadgets?

I dont know a chef anywhere who can get by

Please tell us about your beginning

in this feld?

We began as a contractor in the construction

business and stayed that way for 20 years.

then we deided o prade o doin he

actual developing ourselves, rst with 6 projects

in Eastern Thailand then 2 in Bangkok. We

started in Phuket in early 2007.

What are the strengths o the company?

Actually, we originally wanted to build something

in Patong but realized that Patong is a place

for night life and not so suitable for residential

units such as the ones we specialize in. Kamala

is midway between Patong and Surin and so

supplied the answer, quiet enough, but not far

from the action if and when desired.

What is your main target market?

Our customers are a diverse group, but mainly

from Scandinavia and Russia, with a few from

the rest of Europe.

What about ater-sales services and

management?

We try to make our customers feel as though

they are part of a community and to this end

we have a party 2 or 3 times a year, usually

in the green season. This engenders a unied

spirit but also gives the residents a chance to

air any grievances (if there are any) and we

listen. Lastly, they create and cementfriendships.

any of our past projects in other provinces.

Whereas 95% of our clients before were

Despite the undeniable fact that there are many, many

housing developments in Thailand, Loft style houses

are no ofen seen, and hose ha are, are enerally

jealously retained by the architect or builder. Perhaps it is

because no developer wants to take the risk of building what

is, after all, a kind of niche home, and then not being able

little thoughts of sitting with your lover, bottle of

a different feeling depending on where you stand.

Said the owner with a knowing grin.

As we sat on the rooftop by the Jacuzzi, with the wind

gently blowing away our fatigue, the creator of this

utopia expounded upon his views: Loft design depends

very much on the mood and perspective of the individual

imagination. For example, this column: when we took

it out of its mold we found it had a natural beauty as it

was, so no nishing touches were added. We installed

it and found an interesting juxtaposition between its

rough appearance and the smooth surroundings.

This style of house is not just about architectural

aesthetics but is also about decoration. Things that at

rst may seem inharmonious can go together surprisingly

well. I had to think hard and long about this place to get

it just right. It was time consuming but also satisfying.

As with painting, each brush stroke takes the canvas

a little closer to a masterpiece.

It is true that this house is not everyones cup of tea.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but if you belong

to that discerning niche, it could be right up your ally.
