By the time you read this letter I am probably returning from my fishing trip to Red Lake, Ontario, Canada with Jack Hughes and John Milkint, where we were looking for a monster Northern; can’t say that I missed the heat in Phoenix. Since I have no firsthand knowledge of the June tournament at Saguaro, I thought I would share my thoughts on what is going on with the board as we approach the midway point of our season. It has been an interesting year so far. Bad weather forced us to cancel our February tournament at Bartlett Lake, a first for the club. To make up for the cancellation, we doubled up at Apache Lake in May, also another first for the club. This unintentional schedule change revealed a strong support for the two day format, and so as we prepare next years schedule, look to see more of the same. As we also discussed at our last meeting, we are attempting to create a schedule that best represents the desires of our fishermen. Several factors are being considered, including temperature, distance, accommodations and quantity of quality fish the lake is producing. We are also in preliminary discussions with the Lawman’s Bass Club about having a club vs. club tournament - details on this to come - but I think it would be a blast. In case I haven't said it, I appreciate all the hard work from the guys on the board. Summertime is here, so be sure to stay hydrated out there. Know your limits, take care of your body; it’s the only one you get. Lake Saguaro June 19, 2013 By Terry Tassin Another hot day in paradise! OK, I know we fished this event two days before the first day of the Summer; but that was no reason for mother nature to dump 108 degree temperatures on us - we are nice guys! It was “a bit” warm but it was still bearable. I can hardly wait to see what the temps will be for our July tournament at Bartlett. I would like to note the heart-breaker finish between Teams Edgar & Belden and Cook & Golden for the 5 Pound Pot: only the smallest amount of weight separated their two fish...6.25 vs. 6.24 pounds. Oh well, the satisfaction of catching some really nice bass is theirs. make that two wins in a row.

My son Shane took me prefishing for Fathers Day. Shanewas messing around with frogsand some shad bait, andcaught lots of small fish. At9:00 am I told Shane "Weneed to find some big fish forme" He got out the magic dropshot and went to work. In 2hours and 15 minutes his best5 went 15 pounds. He did thesame thing for me last year forour Saguaro tournament but Iwas not able to make it workon tournament day. Hopefullythis year would be different.

On tournament day, I startedthrowing a jig, and Doc threw adrop shot on a flat by theSnags at first light. I picked up2 fish pretty quickly on the jig.Around 6:30 I got out themagic drop shot rig andstarted fishing up the lake fromthe buoy line across from theSnags fishing at the same spotwhere Shane caught a 5ponder on Sunday. I made 2or 3 casts and hooked a nicefish (6.24 lbs to be official) andI thought I had caught Shane'sfish. We continued on downthe bank catching and culling.Doc would catch a couple (hehas a magic drop shot rig also)I would catch a couple. We moved over to the flats by

again sometime. It looked tome as if everything wentreally smooth at the launchand the weigh-in. A tip of thehat to the entire crew and aspecial thanks to GaryMartlage for directing trafficon that little dogleg ramp inthe dark.

Hal Hensey: It was apleasure to fish with PaulCormany and learn muchabout fishing techniques. Ieven helped bring fish to thescale which made my tripeven more interesting. Icaught my fish drop shottingwith Morning Dawn RoboWorms and I even tried aTexas rig with power wormswithout much success. I reallyenjoyed this lake, it'sbeautiful.

Istarted seeing activity at 20feet on the graph and tossedthe jig out in front of the boat. Iwill not tell the whole story ofthe one that got away, otherthan Doc was on the deck withthe net as we saw our 3 plussimply come unhooked - itwould not be Two-Peat in arow after-all. We gave it agreat try.

Thanks Doc, I had a great timeI have to say thanks to my sonShane for the help pre fishingand Christen for setting me upwith a great jig. Congrats toPaul and Hal for 1st place andSteve for the 5 pound pot.

Mike caught our big fish on ajig and had the tournamentwinning fish on the line but hejumped the string and was ableto spit the jig. That fish wouldhave upgraded us by at least apound, but that's fishing.

Overall we had a great day,and Mike is a great partner. This is our second time fishingthis year; so unfortunately, wecan't be drawn together again. We probably boated over 30fish but they were all clonesbetween 1 ½ - 2 pounds. Weneeded one more kicker to winbut, unfortunately, it just didn'thappen. Again, it was a greatday and I had a blast.

Steve Cook: First of all I wantto say what a great time I hadfishing with Chuck. He is agentleman and a scholar plushe can fish too!

All the fish we weighed in - butone - were caught on onestretch of bank two hundredyards long. They were caughton drop shot rigs and MorningDawn seemed to be the mostproductive color. believe that he let me swingthat ½ lb Yellow Bass into theboat like that without using thenet. We continued to use thespoons and Gary caughtseveral more Yellow Bass (oneof them our 1.09 lb weigh-inGoon Fish) and I believe Icaught one more. We decidedto change tactics because itwasn’t goon fish that we wereafter; however, at the end ofthe day it’s what gave us acheck.

Loved fishing with Gary; it’salways a pleasure to fish withhim. I really enjoy fishing withour club. I thank the Lord forthe opportunity He has givenus to get together as a group atvarious lakes throughout theyear. hours then it was a struggle. Ithink we only caught seven fishtotal. We were fortunate to getthe big one but we “wanted tokeep it close” with .01 lbs tospare, sorry Doc and Mike,(that might cost me on my nextvisit). P.S. I like the new weigh-in procedures with thenumbered bags and great jobon the weigh-in to the weigh-increw!

Chuck Golden added: Steveand I started the day where wehad some success on Tuesday-- up in the canyon past the nowake buoys (Steve landed amonster up there on Tuesdayand we had other good onesas well). We were throwingdrop-shot rigs with Roboworms (various colors) and notgetting even a nibble. After acouple of hours of nothing, wemoved down to another spotwhere we had some luck theday before - around Ship Rock.We threw Carolina rigs. Icaught the first fish to get us onthe board using a ZoomDouble Ringer worm. Stevefollowed up with another usinga craw. After a while we wentback up to the canyon. Thesun was now on the bank andthat was the same conditions

that existed on Tuesday whenwe had our luck. We startedthrowing our drop-shots againand Steve hooked intosomething big. After a longfight on light tackle, we got thebig fish in the boat (high fivesall round). We continued alongthat stretch of bank for the restof the day with the drop-shotscatching the rest of our limitand culling a couple. Now forthe color worm used (Terryinsisted on details) -- 6 inchMorning Dawn with thechartreuse tipped tail - all ofthem - even the ones wecaught in practice so in thiscase anyway pre-fishing paidoff.

I want to thank Steve for agreat couple of days on thewater. He is great to fish withand great to just be around.Who knew that a guy thatspent so much time in Alaskacould actually catch fish in thedesert!

Brian Jacobson commented:Our day started out with usmaking a run almost to the nowake buoys. Gary had a plan.

When we arrived at ourdestination there were 3 boatsalready there from the eveningor that left prior to our grouplaunching so we knew it had tobe the right spot. Gary turnedon the graphs and we saw tonsof fish. We were using spoonsand it didn’t take long and Icaught one. Praise God….wewere on the board with a goonfish! It was a tiny Yellow Bass. I have beencontacting other lakes on thepossibility of obtaining a permitso the board knows whatoptions we have before wemake a decision. Just so youall know I would say the oddsare 90% we will not fish Alamoagain this year. This is not finalbut I wanted all of you to knowwhat is happening.

Ihave been told they are alsoholding discussions with TexasFish and Game on controllingGizzard Shad which Texas hashad excellent results incontrolling. weight of each fish was 2.06lbs. All fish were released backinto the lake after weigh-in tofight again another day.

The 2014 season is rapidlyapproaching and soon permitapplications will be due. Thisyear appears to be a turningpoint because permits for thefirst time will not be just rubberstamped because we fish onW ednesdays . P roposedregulations appear to beheading for a limit on thenumber of tournament bassfishing boats allowed on a lakeeach week. Wednesday fishingwill no longer be protectedbecause the weekly number ofboat count is part of the week’sallocation. I want to emphasizethis regulation is NOT in affectat this time but is beingconsidered for 2014 at somelocations in Arizona. The basicreason is simple, an increasingpopulation of people that ownwater craft and they want toalso use the lakes. The resultsof this policy, already beingimplemented in California, hasshown up in Arizona by anumber of California clubsasking for permits in TontoNational Forest and otherlocations.

I have heard from a number ofmembers on the proposed2014 schedule. The currenttrends are: when we fish awayfrom the valley (Havasu,Roosevelt and Martinez)members are asking for a day

and half tournament (fishstandard hours on Tuesday andup to noon on Wednesday) withthe same partner both days.Another clear trend is memberswant to go where we can allhave a chance of catching alimit of fish with excellentweights. It is very clearmembers do not want to fishlakes where the chances ofcatching a limit are slim andthey do not want five fish thatcome in under 10 pounds. Thatmakes Havasu, Apache,Roosevelt and Martinez verypopular with most of themembers I have heard from. The other almost unanimouschoice is two back-to-backtournaments at Apache in Aprilon Tuesday and Wednesday, with two separate one daytournaments and draw forpartners on each day. Like Isaid in the beginning this is thetrend from members I haveheard from so if you have anopinion on the 2014 scheduleplease let me know. The boardof directors is trying to decidewhat the majority of member’sdesire not just the few we haveheard from before we make ourdecision and recommendations.

As you all know our Alamo falltournament is looking verydoubtful due to extremely lowwater. This condition is broughtabout due to a court case whichresulted in Alamo beingrestricted to a maximum of 10%of total capacity. When otherlakes lose 6-8% of capacitythey are still fishable. WhenAlamo loses 6-8 % it becomesa mud hole with very little waterand unfit for tournaments. Yourboard of directors has beenwatching Alamo very closely

Jeff’splaque will be the second plaquefrom the club to be displayed. The first was Paul Cormany’splaque with his 11.34 poundlunker from last year. Theplaque will be presented duringthe September joint meeting ofFish and Game and the TontoBasin Economic Council andboth agencies are planning torelease newspaper stories andplace it on the Fish and Gameweb site at that time.

Electr ic ian’s tape foremergency repairs: Carrysome electrician’s tape with youwhen you go fishing and keep ithandy. If you knock the

transducer off the bottom ofyour trolling motor on a rock, you can always tape it backon with the tape and go backto fishing. The impulses fromthe fish finder will shootthrough the tape and will alsobe picked up by thetransducer again. Make surewhen you tape thetransducer to the trollingmotor, you tape it as straightdown as possible. It’ll get youthrough a day of fishing.

Going against the grain forlate-summer bass: Hotsummer, fish deep – that’sthe standard game plan formost bass fishermen, butevery once in a whilesomebody proves that itdoesn’t always work thatway.

In any lake, there’s always alarge population of bass thatlive super-shallow all year. From now until the middle ofSeptember, you probably cancatch a good stringer of basson ledges, but sooner or laterthey’re going to burn you.Always check the shallowfish, no matter how hot andsunny it is. It might not be thebest pattern, because thebaitfish aren’t shallow – butthen again, it might be themain event.

Fish the transitional waterbetween the ledges and thebig bays or coves. Hit thepoints and shoreline withtopwater lures. If you getaround bluegill beds – whichyou’re liable to find duringany of the warm months –fish topwater lures that mimicbream. If the wind gets up, hit

the banks and points on thewindy side with swimbaits orspinnerbaits. There doesn’t haveto be any cover; just watch forbaitfish breaking on the surfaceas bass come up under them. Then put your trolling motordown and start covering water.

Upsize trebles for surer hooksets When fishing crankbaitsand the fish seem to be justslapping at the lure and missingthe hooks, upsize the backtreble from, say, a No. 6 to a No.4. A lot of times fish are sluggishand will just nip at a lure orbarely get hooked on the fronttreble. Having a bigger treble onthe back gives you a betterchance for a solid hookup, eitherbecause the fish latches onthere, or it gets hooked thereduring the fight. It’s a good ideato start the season out withsmaller crankbaits and then uselarger ones as the yearprogresses. The rationale is tomatch the size and color of theactual forage available at thetime you are fishing.

Moon Phases: Experiencesays, fishing tends to be better, sometimes great, on the threedays before and after a fullmoon and the new moon.Sometimes there will be anespecially strong bite on thedays before or after, andsometimes for the entire period. However, weather fronts cancompletely cancel out theexpected advantage of a goodmoon. Stable weather isprobably a stronger advantage, but when there is stable weatherand a good moon it can begangbusters fishing.
