Choral Canada - Anacrusis

Overview Choral Canada is initiating a daring, expansive, innovative choral creation and performance experience to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary and the significance of the choral arts in this country. This multi-disciplinary and multi-dimensional choral music project will have a significant, lasting impact on Canadian choral communities and beyond.

Key components include: - A commissioned multi-movement song-cycle by six Canadian composers for multiple voicings (5 individual ensembles - SSA, SSAA, SATB, TTBB, youth - and one massed ensemble) - Core stories from across our country that are expressive of our diverse identities and histories through water. Interdisciplinary connections of singing, music, theatre and technologies. - Multiple site-based, outdoor performances (6) interacting with space, landscapes, humanscapes, all relating and surrounding different water sources. With travelling, site-to-site audiences (groups of 100) culminating in a combined massed-performance event. - Contemporary and innovative choral presentation (singing, theatre, movement and sound, with the landscape integrated as an active participant) - A legacy piece in the form of a website that will re-create the experience anew for everyone. This site will include raw video footage, images, and audio recordings to offer a way to experience this project time and time again, for years to come.

Artistic Team: The incredible vision of Jillian Keiley (Artistic Director) and Shawn Kerwin (Designer) culminate together in creating a visual and acoustic experience like no other. Jillian Keiley is an award-winning director from St. John’s, NL and founder of Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland. Ms. Keiley assumed her role as the National Arts Center English Theatre Artistic Director in August 2012, and has had dozens of highly successful productions throughout her career. Shawn Kerwin studied theatre design in London, England, as well as attending several design schools in New York City. She is currently an Associate Professor of Stage Design at York University in Toronto, and has been nominated for the Toronto’s Dora Awards a total of nine times, winning twice for Outstanding Design. We are very lucky to have such a powerhouse design team on board for this extraordinary project!

Located in the stunning Mount Scio Savoury Farm, St. John’s, NL Audiences will experience the performances while walking through different site locations amongst the farm.

Choirs and Composers Participating choirs and their composers include: - Elektra Women’s Choir,

director Morna Edmundson with composer Alexina Louie: Vancouver, BC.
