Austin:HERITAGE CHASING STATE TITLE
Rounding out the Lady Coy-otes’ first-place performanceswas pole vaulter Bailey Blunt, who defended her area titlewith a jump of 12-00.
Littlefield said those fieldevents will be key for herteam’s quest at a state champi-onship.
“If our field event kids dowhat they’re capable of doing, then we should score a lot ofpoints,” she said.
With nine Lady Coyotesqualifying for the state meet,Heritage could see its strengthin numbers propel the team toa gold medal in Austin.
“We’ve got a really good shotto win it,” Littlefield said. “If
we perform the way we did atregionals, we should be in goodposition.”
With two of Heritage’s relayteams taking gold at regionals,a repeat performance will becrucial to the Lady Coyotes’state title aspirations.
“It’s really going to comedown to the relays,” Littlefieldsaid. “Our relays have to dowell.”
On the boys side, Heritageadvanced two athletes, withCarter Blunt taking gold in the1,600 (4:16.18) and 3,200(9:18.69). Kene Nwangwu willjoin Blunt after taking top hon-ors in the high jump after a dis-tance of 6-08. Emeka Nwangwualso took bronze in the 110hurdles (14.19).

FLOWER MOUND – The Lit-tle Elm softball team made sureto make an early statement in itsClass 4A bi-district playoff gameagainst Carrollton Creekview onFriday.
The Lady Lobos scored fiveruns in the first two innings, in-cluding four in the second, enroute to an 8-3 victory to advanceto the area round.
“It was nice to jump aheadand let the nerves settle down,”said Brandy Courville, Little Elmhead coach.
Little Elm led off the gamewith a walk from sophomorecatcher Claudia Vaughn andeventually scored when fresh-man first baseman AmandaFields roped an RBI double forone of her three hits on the night.
“We had a game plan ready togo,” said Matthew Schell,Creekview head coach, “but wejust couldn’t get it going.”
Junior pitcher Rylie Scuddershut down the Lady Mustangs inthe home half of the first and gotall the run support she wouldneed in the second.
The Lady Lobos opened theinning with a single from senioroutfielder Briana Armstrong andfollowed suit with singles fromjunior Modesty Novin and sopho-
more Tatum Dobson.Fields and senior Ellyse
Boughey then made Creekviewsenior pitcher Dana Johnson paywith a pair of RBI doubles thatpushed Little Elm’s advantage to5-0.
“[Johnson] did a great job,”Schell said. “She was hitting herspots, but [Little Elm] just gottheir bats on it.”
Johnson provided Creekview’sonly hit against Scudder throughthe first five innings on a singleup the middle. The junior hurlerkept the Lady Mustangs’ offenseat bay until the sixth inning whenJohnson blasted an RBI doubleoff the left-field wall to bringhome catcher LeeAnn Blanchard, who singled to start the inning.
“We played great on defense,”Courville said. “When the teamplays well behind [Scudder],we’re hard to stop.”
Johnson’s RBI double cameafter a three-run inning from theLittle Elm offense that featuredBoughey’s second run-scoringdouble that gave the senior fourRBIs in the game.
Johnson tossed five-plus in-nings, surrendering five runs on10 hits and two walks. The seniorwas relieved by Sydney Walker, who didn’t fare much better.Walker allowed three runs on twohits and a walk during her two in-nings of work.
Creekview’s offense madethings tough for Scudder in thefinal inning, with junior desig-nated hitter Alyssa Jimenez andBlanchard each collecting RBIdoubles in the frame.
Scudder ended any hopeCreekview had of a late come-back by getting Walker to pop upto first base for the game’s finalout.
“We came into the gameknowing [Scudder] was a goodpitcher,” Schell said.
Scudder went the distance, tallying six strikeouts while sur-rendering three runs on five hitsand two walks.
The Lady Lobos, who im-proved to 21-7 with the win, willmove on to the area round andtake on Adamson in a 7 p.m. Fri-day contest at Creekview.
Creekview ends its seasonwith a 16-13 mark after enteringthe playoffs as the No. 3 seedfrom District 10-4A.
“Our girls have battled backall year long,” Schell said. “Wejust couldn’t get it done tonight.”
