Littlefield said those field events will be key for her team’s quest at a state champi- onship. “If our field event kids do what they’re capable of doing, then we should score a lot of points,” she said. With nine Lady Coyotes qualifying for the state meet, Heritage could see its strength in numbers propel the team to a gold medal in Austin. “We’ve got a really good shot to win it,” Littlefield said. “If we perform the way we did at regionals, we should be in good position.” With two of Heritage’s relay teams taking gold at regionals, a repeat performance will be crucial to the Lady Coyotes’ state title aspirations. “It’s really going to come down to the relays,” Littlefield said. “Our relays have to do well.” On the boys side, Heritage advanced two athletes, with Carter Blunt taking gold in the 1,600 (4:16.18) and 3,200 (9:18.69). Kene Nwangwu will join Blunt after taking top hon- ors in the high jump after a dis- tance of 6-08. CHRIS O’DELL [email protected] FLOWER MOUND – The Lit- tle Elm softball team made sure to make an early statement in its Class 4A bi-district playoff game against Carrollton Creekview on Friday. The Lady Lobos scored five runs in the first two innings, in- cluding four in the second, en route to an 8-3 victory to advance to the area round. “It was nice to jump ahead and let the nerves settle down,” said Brandy Courville, Little Elm head coach. Little Elm led off the game with a walk from sophomore catcher Claudia Vaughn and eventually scored when fresh- man first baseman Amanda Fields roped an RBI double for one of her three hits on the night. “We had a game plan ready to go,” said Matthew Schell, Creekview head coach, “but we just couldn’t get it going.” Junior pitcher Rylie Scudder shut down the Lady Mustangs in the home half of the first and got all the run support she would need in the second. The Lady Lobos opened the inning with a single from senior outfielder Briana Armstrong and followed suit with singles from junior Modesty Novin and sopho- more Tatum Dobson. Fields and senior Ellyse Boughey then made Creekview senior pitcher Dana Johnson pay with a pair of RBI doubles that pushed Little Elm’s advantage to 5-0. “[Johnson] did a great job,” Schell said. “She was hitting her spots, but [Little Elm] just got their bats on it.” Johnson provided Creekview’s only hit against Scudder through the first five innings on a single up the middle. The junior hurler kept the Lady Mustangs’ offense at bay until the sixth inning when Johnson blasted an RBI double off the left-field wall to bring home catcher LeeAnn Blanchard, who singled to start the inning. “We played great on defense,” Courville said. “When the team plays well behind [Scudder], we’re hard to stop.” Johnson’s RBI double came after a three-run inning from the Little Elm offense that featured Boughey’s second run-scoring double that gave the senior four RBIs in the game. Johnson tossed five-plus in- nings, surrendering five runs on 10 hits and two walks. The senior was relieved by Sydney Walker, who didn’t fare much better. Walker allowed three runs on two hits and a walk during her two in- nings of work. Creekview’s offense made things tough for Scudder in the final inning, with junior desig- nated hitter Alyssa Jimenez and Blanchard each collecting RBI doubles in the frame. Scudder ended any hope Creekview had of a late come- back by getting Walker to pop up to first base for the game’s final out. “We came into the game knowing [Scudder] was a good pitcher,” Schell said. Scudder went the distance, tallying six strikeouts while sur- rendering three runs on five hits and two walks. The Lady Lobos, who im- proved to 21-7 with the win, will move on to the area round and take on Adamson in a 7 p.m. Fri- day contest at Creekview. Creekview ends its season with a 16-13 mark after entering the playoffs as the No. 3 seed from District 10-4A. “Our girls have battled back all year long,” Schell said. “We just couldn’t get it done tonight.” From PAGE TEN “We’ve got a really good shot to win it.
