This provides backup for phone service only.

During a power outage you must use a corded phone that does not require AC power. Your cordless phones won’t work.

Without a charged backup battery, you won’t be able to call 911 during a power outage.

It is your responsability to monitor your backup battery and request a replacement.

We provide options for replacement batteries when they have expired .

A fully charged battery should provide at least 8 hours of phone usage.

When the battery needs replacement the red battery light will light up and an alarm will beep every 15 minutes. The audible alarm can be silenced permanently by pressing the alarm silence button for 15 seconds.

When should I replace my UPS battery?

If your home phone service is provided with our state-of-the-art fiber optic network, it requires electric power to operate. To avoid a disruption of home voice service during a power outage, and to maintain the ability to connect to 911 emergency services, we at Amherst Telephone Company, ATC, offer you battery backup options. In order to make a call during a power outage you must also have a land-line telephone in your home that does not require AC current.ATC provides an 8 hour battery backup. This battery will last approximately 4-6 years. We will send a notification annually to remind you to check the battery. You may pick up your replacement battery at our Amherst office and install it yourself, or have us come and replace it for a trip fee of $25. Once removed these batteries must be recycled or dropped off at our office.You can also purchase a backup battery at a battery retail store. Only 12-volt 7.2 Ah sealed lead acid batteries should be used in your battery backup unit (model BP7.2-12 or equivalent).
