EJ’s Got Talent Quest On Friday 7 December, our school will be hosting the annual EJ’s Got Talent Quest. The event allows our students to show off their many talents to their peers and wider EJ community. Below are the details for the 2018 event:

Year 1-3 classes: 9.00am – 10.30am Year 2-6 classes: 11.00am – 12.45pm Entry is $2

Over the coming weeks each class will be hosting their own auditions. The top individual class auditions will progress to the final of EJ’s Got Talent. Parents and community members are most welcome to attend this fun and entertaining event. The Student Council have once again decided to donate all money raised to the Vellore Hospital in India. Our school has had a long association with the Friends of Vellore Hospital Foundation. This foundation provides medical treatment for people who cannot afford much needed surgery and medication. We look forward to seeing you at EJ’s Got Talent on 7 December.

Lost Property I would encourage parents and children to visit our lost property over the coming weeks as we have a large number of clothing, lunch boxes and water bottles that need to be collected. Your assistance with this matter is greatly appreciated.

From the Deputy Principals Years 3-6

The power of conversation If you feel like your children don’t share as much information about school as you would like them to, you are not alone.

Psychologist Dr. Justin Coulson has written a useful piece on this topic, with some suggestions for alternative questions to ‘how was your day?’. A genuine curiosity about their learning, and how they learn, should lead to greater insights about their day. If they can explain to you something that they learnt that day, that is a great way to cement that new knowledge or skill. I hope there is something in here that helps!

Prep — Year 2 The term is flying by at an amazing rate. Teachers and students are working hard to collect evidence of achievements in learning in time to report back to you formally in Week 10 through the end of year report card. It is evident we are reaching the end of a school year in many ways. It is that magical time in classrooms where teachers and students can see the culmination of a years’ worth of learning and the joy of mastering skills and concepts that have been a curriculum focus. In the last few weeks I have had both teachers (immensely proud of their class) and students eager

to share with me a final draft of writing or a special written task they have completed. It is great to be able to take part in these class and individual celebrations of learning. Writing, just like reading is reliant on children making consistent links to the skills and processes taught. The more frequently they write the faster basic skills become automatic. Building writing mileage is just as critical as reading mileage. However, unlike reading, the writing process is reliant on children having ideas and stimulus to begin the task. Anyone who has ever experienced writers block will know that sometimes just getting started is the hardest part. Andy Griffiths, the popular children's author, has developed a book that helps children over the 'getting started hurdle'. Designed for teachers, students and young aspiring writers, Once Upon a Slime contains 45 fun writing and storytelling activities, such as lists, instructions, cartoons, personal stories, poems and pocket books. Examples from Andy's books are used to demonstrate techniques to inspire readers and writers to have as much fun playing with ideas, words and pictures as Andy and Terry Denton (Illustrator) do when they get together to create their crazy books. Who better for kids to learn about real writing from than a real author? Suggestions and examples like fake news articles, crazy quizzes, creating superheroes, jokes, cartoons and even a random idea generator will give children a platform to think about their own creative writing. Encouraging children to play with words and images is a valuable activity for parents and teachers to do. A great idea for a quiet, productive activity over the holidays!

Electronic Report Cards Report cards will be emailed directly to parents on Monday 10 December. Please ensure you have added [email protected] to your list of safe senders to ensure report card emails aren’t sent to your junk email.

From the HOC What is STEM? You’ve probably heard that Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills are important to jobs in the future. It might sound daunting, but there is good news: you don’t have to be a scientist to help your child develop these skills.

Here are some tips: Encourage Like any subject area, having a positive attitude to STEM will make a big difference to your child’s

learning. If you hear them say, ‘I’m no good at maths’, help them to remember the areas they have become good at—and praise the effort that helped them get there: ‘Do you remember how you worked hard on your times tables and mastered them? I’m sure you can do the same with division.’ Show the relevance Maths and Science are part of everyday life, so there are lots of ways you can draw connections between the classroom and home. Remember that kids love to achieve, and the more they can demonstrate their knowledge, the more motivated they are to learn: ‘You are so good at fractions now, why don’t you help me divide the leftover cake fairly.’ Exposure Your child can pick up a lot of STEM learning without even realising it. Do they love reading books about planets or volcanoes? Great, they’re connecting with science and technology. Do they create bridges or buildings using blocks in computer games or apps? Excellent, they’re using physics and engineering concept s. Do they watch television programs about animals, scientific myths, or space exploration? Fantastic, those are rich in STEM too. Inspire There are lots of occupations (and pastimes) that require STEM skills and knowledge, including most of the fastest growing ones. Even in primary school, you can help your child see the connections. For example, when your child learns something new in science, talk to them about where that knowledge might be useful, or who might use it: ‘I wonder who needs to understand the water cycle in their job? What about farmers? Or weather forecasters?’ If you are interested please take a look at the STEM Hub for Parents and students: https://learningplace.eq.edu.au/cx/resources/file/5da759ed-285d-4132-b8e8-58198109fb03/1/index.html. Have a great week.

Student Council News Jeans 4 Genes Day @ EJ All students are invited to participate in Jeans 4 Genes day on Friday November 23. What to wear: Wear your favourite jeans or jean shorts to school with your regular school uniform shirt. What to do: If you come to school out of uniform you should:

donate a gold coin,

donate a pair of jeans for charity,

or donate a coin and donate a pair of old jeans to charity. Money raised from the gold coin donations will be sent to Jeans for Genes, Australia. Jeans for Genes is an organisation that supports people with genetic diseases. Often called disorders, syndromes and other terms, genetic diseases can be confusing, but put simply—they are conditions caused, at least in part, by changes in our DNA. Random errors that occur naturally, or exposure to radiation and harmful environmental substances like asbestos, can cause changes in our DNA. Genetic diseases are not contagious like the flu or the measles and there are more than 6000 known genetic diseases. The used jeans we collect will be donated to local charities supporting families in need.

Please make sure the jeans you donate are in good condition, clean and neatly folded.
