The earliest records show the spelling of the name as Finney, and the Plymouth and Bristol lines, with but a single exception, hare retained this spelling. The Barnstable line, however, from the first adopted that of phinney. There was another family, settled In Connect lout of the name of Plnney, whioh should not be confounded with the Barnstable Phinneys, some of whom removed to that state.

This family appears to have come from England before 1631, and consisted of a mother, a daughter Catherine, and two sons, Robert and John. ••Mother Finney1* died in Plymouth, April 22, 1650, "Upwards of 80 years".

Catherine died June 7,.1637, married Gabriel Pallowell, who died Deo. 28, 1667, aged 83 years.

Robert, born about 1608, died Jan. 7, 1687/88, married iopt 1, 1641, phebe Ripley* who was born 1619, died Oot 9, 1710, in her 92nd year. They resided in Plymouth, Having no issue he willed his property in Plymouth to his two nephews, Robert and Josiah, the eons of his brother, John.

John married (3) Juno 26, 16i>4 (Barnstable Records), Rliz- abeth Bailey, who was burled in Bristol, Feb. 9, 1683/04.

John received a grunt of land In Plymouth in 1639, and again in 1640 and in 1641. He was made a froervn In 1644, was exciseman from 1646 to 1648, and served on several juries. With his son, John Jr., he was admitted a freeman of Barnstable, May 29, 1670, where John finally nettled. He was at one time a resident of ‘cituate, and later joined the company which settled Bristol in 1680, but in 1682 !ie sold his Inters ,t in the Mount Hop© lands at Bristol to his son Jonathan. 'ron 1682 no record of him appears till 1702, when he seems to have removed to wancea. He probably died soon after as a deed was executed by him at that time which he signed with a mark.
