March Edition National Walkout Day

Written By: Breana Martinez, Staff Reporter

March 14th, 2018, Banning High School honored the seventeen lives that had been lost due to the Florida school shooting.

Mr. Mendoza started the event with 17 bells ringing. One bell for each person who passed. Our Senior Class President, Matteo Torres, called up the Commissioner of Spirit, An-gel Ulloa to say some words. Angel gave an outstanding and inspiring speech, “Good morning everyone my name is Angel Ulloa, and I am a student like most of you here. March Edition The Year 19681968

Written By: Gerardo Uriostegui, Staff Reporter

50 years after 1968, we still, to this day, experience similar situa-tions such as having a young edu-cated audience speaking up in order to have their voices heard. This al-lows the young protesters to make a positive change in our society since most adults don’t use their voice. A great example of this would be of all the protests happening, and the au-dience demanding a change in the world to make it a better place.

Many tragedies happened in the year of 1968 that impacted the world in a negative way such as losing two amaz-ing leaders, Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King. The loss of these idols impacted the civil rights pioneers to make a change in the world by having peace-ful protests in more than 100 cities across the nation. Not only did many cities across the nation unite as one, but history was created due to the protests gaining attention.

1968 - The Chicano Movement Written By: Adriana Velazquez, Staff Reporter

Back in the days, life was more of a challenge for the Mexican-Americans than it is now. They were deprived of their rights because of their racial background and treated with no respect whatsoever. There was segregation in schools worldwide which led to not granting them to an educational system. Nothing was being done to help Chicanos around the world, so they had to take matters into their own hands. Thus, the protest for civil rights and educa-tional opportunities began. It was led by young, dedi-cated people such as teenagers and college students, who demanded a change, and would not back down until they achieved their goal- equality. The movement took place during school in East L.A. Class was in session, but then there was a huge disturbance that occurred. It was the beginning of the Chicano rights protest; students were running, banging on classroom doors shouting “WALKOUT!” and assembling at the front of the school. Although they got the attention of the Los Angeles Board of Education in the end, the process of the protest was terrifying. There was police brutality where students were beaten and dragged if they did not go back to class. This did not stop them from fighting for what they believed is right, and influenced other schools around the area to stand up for themselves and not get pushed around.

Student Lead BlowoutsWritten By: Lizeth Manzano, Staff Reporter

Inspired by all of the political movements that were occurring in the 1960’s, East LA Students decided to use their voice to demand for more than the standard education and end discrimination in school. East Los Angeles students consisted of mostly Mexican-American students who faced prejudice in their school by the staff and were constantly discouraged about pursuing a higher education. Education was so bad for the Mexican-American students that there was a 60% drop out rate and those who did graduate would result in reading an average of an 8th grade level. Student leaders tried taking their concerns to the board of education but were not heard so then they realized that they had to find another way, this lead to the 1968 East Los Angeles walkouts, also known as blowouts. Student leaders realized that by walking out of school, they would be heard since it would be affecting schools financially, they are paid based on the amount of students there is each day. Students from East LA schools then organized blow-outs in the year 1968, with the help of teacher Sal Castro and others. Though the first few walkouts that occurred were unsuccessful and were met with so many restraints, the final one was a breakthrough. Ten to fifteen thousand students from the East LA schools participated in a rally and after the weeks of protests they were finally heard by the board of education.

The Tlatelolco MassacreWritten By: Anthony Garza, Staff Reporter

Protests in 1968 were the new norm and they were happening all over the world including Italy, Germany and the United States. Arguably, the biggest protest this world had ever seen happened in Mexico on Octo-ber 2, 1968. The students reacted to violence shown by the police towards a preparatory school. A bazooka was shot towards the school and killed some students in the building. Later that day, students gathered to discuss

a protest that would take place in the Tlatelolco housing complex. Thousands of students showed up to support the movement but were greeted by one of the most deadliest massacres in Mexican-history. The protest was a student led movement in Mexico City and the army was not having any of it. After the students started to protest, they wanted to bring an end to the resistance. A little while after, bright red flares were sent from heli-copters to signal to start killing anyone who is at the protest including innocent bystanders, par-ents, and college students. Tanks and shots from military guns started to ring out from the plaza to kill anyone on sight. The killed students were car-ried away by trucks and the survivors were sent to jail and were never seen again to leave no wit-nesses. To cover up the horror that had infolded in Mexico City, there were very few confirmed deaths compared to how many people lost their lives. The Mexican government still denies the fact that hundreds of innocent lives were taken away. Nearly 6,000 people were injured and 300 were killed, but the media only reported about 25-30 deaths. Till this day the killings of the mas-sacre remain a big mystery and only about 40 deaths have been uncovered.

The Year 1968 March Edition Apollo’s Orbit

Written By: Nathan Armijo, Staff Reporter

The Apollo 8 mission consisted of photos of Earth from deep space. The first time humans traveled to the far side of the moon, having a live broadcast on the television, and reaching a new speed record of 24,200 mph to leave the Earth’s gravity. The team had three members, Jim Lovell, Bill Anders and Frank Borman. These men were the first human beings to travel to the moon.

During Christmas Eve, the rocket made its or-bit around the moon circling around it 10 times giving them the titles of being the first human be-

ings to travel to the moon. This event couldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for the space rivalry with the Soviet Union and our nation’s desire to fulfill our President John F. Kennedy’s goal to get to the moon by the decade’s end.

When the astronauts reached the moon, they were in awe at the sight. The Apollo mission was broadcasted to all American homes showing the moon and the stars with the earth being so small it can be covered by a man’s thumb. The homes of America received one of the best Christmas gifts that year the gift of be-ing able to see the Earth as seen from space. During the orbit, a photo was taken by one of the astronauts giving the most iconic photo of the Earth.

U.S. Athletes Take A Stand at the Summer Olympics

Written By: Erandin Alejo, Staff Reporter

1968 was the year of excitement and tragedies. America reached new heights while it also experi-enced very low points. Many know this year to have made many historical events. Several accomplish-ments were conquered such as introducing the first 747 and orbiting the moon. However, in the same year, the U.S. lost a Navy intelligence ship. They also lost two leaders of peace, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F Kennedy. An event that stood out to me was U.S. athletes taking a stand at the Summer Olympics in 1968. During the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, two black athletes staged silent act against dis-crimination in the U.S. Medalists Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fistst during the National Anthem. They continued to put their fists in the air as they bowed their heads to receive the gold and bronze medals. However it didn’t stop there. They wore black socks with no shoes. On their clothes, they had badges that represented the Olympic Proj-ect for Human Rights. The Olympic Project for Hu-man Rights was a group against racism and segre-gation in sports. They were booed as they walk off. It shock many people who thought it was a sign of disrespect to the Olympic spirit.

1968: Robert F. Kennedy’s Assassination Written By Stephanie Ordaz, Staff Reporter

The summer of 1968 was a violent time in American history. Senator Rob-ert Kennedy was gunned down by an assassin at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. The attack took place after Kennedy had wrapped up a speech at the ho-tel ballroom. As he went through a kitchen hallway to another part of the build-ing, a Jordanian born Palestinian named Sirhan opened fire, hitting Kennedy in the back of the head. Kennedy collapsed and was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent brain surgery. Twenty six hours later after the attack, Kennedy died at the age of 42.

Kennedy was appreciated by many to be the only person in American poli-tics capable of uniting the people. He was admired by the minority community for his integrity and devotion to the civil rights cause. After winning California’s primary, Kennedy was in the position to receive the Democratic nomination. His death prompted the protection of presidential candidates by the United States Secret Service.

1968 Dr. King AssassinatedWritten By: Sarah Garcia-Galloway, Staff Reporter

The iconic Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. fought for civil rights and ad-vocated for equality. As the leader of the peaceful Civil Rights Movement in the 50s and 60s, he was an endeared yet hated man. On April 4, 1968 in Memphis Tennessee, Dr. King was assassinated by James Earl Ray. King was at the Lor-raine Motel when he was shot. Rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead less than an hour later. After King’s death, his fellow civil rights advocates made pleas to the pub-lic for a nonviolent response to the assassination. However, riots broke out in

over 100 cities across America. This was a strong, harmful response to King’s death. This result shows his immense impact and change in American ideals and common outlook on those of color. His death only helped urge on the Civil Rights movement to become stronger and grow bigger. King stands as a martyr in our history for his willfulness and deter-mination for equality for all. King was popular to the public for his strong resistance against segregation and racial prejudice. He traveled across America giving speeches ask-ing for changing and encouraging others to join in on the movement for civil rights. King was unliked by many due to his strong opposition to common American society. Through peaceful protest and the help and support of others, King brought on a new change that was unseen before. He broke barriers in racial stance and enriched the action of peaceful protest.

Who WE AdmireMarch Edition

Who I Admire the MostWritten By: Gaby Tinoco, Co-Editor in Chief

I admire Harry Styles because he’s so kind and generous. He’s incredibly successful and yet he makes sure to stay humble. He’s always thanking us, the fans, saying without us he wouldn’t be here which is true. He tells us so often

that he loves us and is grateful for us. Some qualities that he possesses are kindness, car-ing, appreciative and many more but I want to keep it brief. I love him for speaking up about women’s rights. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he was asked how it felt to have a large fanbase that is mostly filled with young girls. Styles responded quickly without hesita-tion saying, “There’s no goal posts. Young girls like the Beatles. You gonna tell me they’re not serious? How can you say young girls don’t get it? They’re our future. Our future doctors, lawyers, mothers, presidents, they kind of keep the world going. Teenage-girl fans – they

don’t lie. If they like you, they’re there. They don’t act too cool. They like you, and they tell you. Which is sick.” I can go on and on about how much I adore and love him but I truly love how he sticks up for his fans and doesn’t act like he’s above anyone else.

Someone I AdmireWritten By: Jasmine Contreras, Editor in Chief

The person I admire is my grandma because she is the most hardwork-ing person I’ve ever met. All her life she has been working. She started from the point when she no longer lived with her husband, my late grandpa. Since he left my grandma, she had to find a way to support her only child. Up to now, my grandma still continues to work and I have never heard her com-plain even once because she claims that it is some-thing she enjoys. Qualities my grandma possesses that I would emulate in my life is that she is kind, generous, hardworking, optimistic and nurturing. Some of the qualities she has are important to have especially being an optimistic person. She always seems to be hopeful and confident for her future which is some-thing I should be too. I tend to be sort of negative about situations in my life so I will try to emulate some of her qualities into mine.

Someone I AdmireWritten By: Maya Chavez, Staff Reporter

One of the people I admire is Ryan Reynolds. I started getting more into him around the end of sev-enth grade because in 2016 he played the lead role in Deadpool, as Deadpool obviously, so I looked into more of what he’s done and such, and watching clips of him on interviews and the things he says. I grew to look up to him more. He’s an amazing actor and he has a great personality, even on his social media you can get a view of his mischief with the things he posts or tweets. I do have others that I love, but Ryan is the main for the past 3 years now. He is how I picture I’d be when I’m older, even if everything is serious he’d be the one to throw in a joke to try and lighten things even when it’s the wrong time.

Who Do You Admire Written By: Sebastian Alvarez, Staff Reporter

I admire my dad. He works very hard to make sure we have a meal, clean clothes, and that I am happy. He tries his best even when he’s at his worst. For example, my dad goes through so much pain everyday because he suffers from cirrhosis since he does not understand when to stop drink-ing. Even when my dad is coughing up blood and having very strong stomach pains, he still manages to go to work. At the end of everyday, my dad calls us to see if we need money or groceries even if it means he won’t have money for himself, but that’s a good thing so he won’t buy a beer. I believe my dad is strong and confident and I want to be just like that when I grow up and have kids.

My Role ModelWritten By: Stephanie Ordaz, Staff Reporter

There are many people in my life that I have so much admiration for, such as my parents, siblings, friends, social media influencers, and youtubers. One of the most important and influencing people in my life is my mom. My mom is and always has been my number one role model. My mom always supports me through everything and no matter what I know my mom is always there for me. My mom is one of my bestfriends because I can talk about anything with her and I know that I will always have her support to rely on. My mom has so many qualities that I admire and I hope that one day I can have these amazing qualities just like her. My mom is one of the most hard-working and strong women I know. She goes out of her way to do anything for myself and for my family. She will never give up on a person meaning she will always believe in you. She supports you through thick and thin and she wants to let you know that she’ll always be there for you no matter what. If one day I have a family of my own I hope that I can be strong enough to have amazing qualities like my mom, the woman I love and admire the most.

Who I AdmireWritten By: Sarah Garcia-Galloway, Staff Reporter

I very much admire the one and only Leonardo DiCaprio. His actions and personality is heartwarm-ing to me. He is extremely hardworking and intelligent, which are attributes I hope to mimic. DiCaprio is a strong advocate for world change, as am I. He is a part of and has supported over 26 charities and foundations such

as: The African Wildlife Foundation, Global Green, Pediatric Epilepsy Project, and Save the Elephants. He has created several films to educate others on public and environmental issues. He has even created his own foundation named The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. His founda-tion is dedicated to the long term health and wellbeing of all Earth’s inhabitants. I

hope to one day have the ability to support such amazing charities, increase public awareness of pressing issues, and hopefully help others. DiCaprio also puts in incred-ible dedication in his acting, which is something I bla-tantly admire. I hope to one day be like him and to put large amounts of dedication into my work and conquest.

The Woman I Admire MostWritten By: Erandin Alejo, Staff Reporter

There aren’t many people that I know of that I admire. However, the one person who stands out and with no doubt is admirable, is my mother. The quali-ties she possesses are the ones I want to emulate throughout my life. She is the most hardworking person I know. She has been raising two kids by herself for 14 plus years. She works for more than eight hours a day for six days a week to make sure my brother and I have what we need. She is also a great representa-tion of an independent woman. She never has depended on anyone but herself to take care of her and to make her happy. She’s always known how to do every-thing on her own. Besides being a hardworking and independent woman, she is also a wonderful mother. She always puts her kids first. The simplest things she does is what makes her the best mom. Throughout the years my mom has been through so much. However, she still manages to wake up everyday and continue be-ing the person she is. The type of person she is, is the person I want to be in 20 years.

Places We’d Like to go March EditionNot too far from home Written by: Joselyne Rivera, Staff Reporter

If I could go somewhere I have never gone before, I would choose to go to the one and only Canada. Out of all the cities and countries in the world, I would choose Canada because it has always been a place I’ve wanted to travel to. The tourist attractions such as all the lakes located such as Peyto Lake and Lake Ontario are very breathtaking in pictures however standing on the exact grounds where the lakes are located would not only be breathtaking but such an exhilarating experience. Being able to go to Canada and come back with the mem-ories that you can talk about and just say “I’ve been there..” would add on the rea-sons why I chose Canada. Going any place and being able to view different things, taste new foods and being in a new environment than your ordinary home town will always be a place to go.

Another reason I would choose Canada is for one particular reason. Their chips. Everyone wants to go to different places to try their best foods but I want to go to Canada for a specific chips they have. Lays ketchup flavor. It of course sounds very repulsive but I actually got the chance to taste these chips one time and I don’t remember the taste as anything sickening or unsavory. I would defi-nitely love to go to Canada and visit every museum, lake, city, and of course have another chance to taste the ketchup flavored chips.

FloridaWritten By: Jasmine Contreras, Editor in Chief

If I had a chance to go somewhere I’ve never been be-fore, I would go to Florida. I have always wanted to go to Florida ever since I knew that was the location of Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando. I am always watching videos of these two theme parks, I guess you can say I’m pretty obsessed. Even when I was little, I would ask my parents if they can take me to Florida so I can visit Disney World since I have always been a big Disney fan. Also, I really like the weather in Florida. It may rain at random times but mostly it is always sunny. I’ve noticed that it is a state that has a lot of famous land-marks to visit such as national parks and beaches.

LondonWritten By: Gaby Tinoco, Co-Editor in Chief

If I could go anywhere, I would go to Europe. To be more specific, I would like to go to London. All my life, I have always been in an environment where it’s almost always hot and hardly ever cold. California Summers are hot and our Winters our cold. If I got to visit Lon-don, every day would be cold! I love cold weather and I love when people have accents so being in a place where people don’t speak the same way I do would be a fun ex-perience. I’d also like to take a trip down to Holmes Chapel in Cheshire, England. My favorite artist, Harry Styles, grew up there and his picture is up in a bakery where he used to work so I would love to be in the place he knew for so many years.

FranceWritten By: Sarah Garcia-Galloway, Staff Reporter

If I could go somewhere I’ve never gone before, I would go to France because it is beautiful. France holds some of the most beautiful and popular tourist destinations in the world. If I were to go to France I would be able to visit the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. I love art and seeing the paintings within the Louvre would be extremely exciting. I would be able to visit the French Riviera and witness all the boats and tourists crowded together. Not only is France beautiful, but is has a very open culture. The French have

been known to be very open people and freely expressive. Their way of life is very simple, which is something I’ve always adored. I would really like to taste real French food, not the crap here in America that we claim is French. I’ve watched shows where people try French food and their re-actions make me want to visit France even more.

The French language has always been interesting to me. I’ve studied French over the past five years and I would like to actually have people to speak French with. Overall, France is an interesting coun-try filled with well-known sights and creative foods. This is why France is my destination of choice.

Mexico and the Pacific OceanWritten By: Noemi Macias, Staff Reporter

If I could go anywhere where I haven’t gone before, I would go to Mexico, and under the Pacific Ocean. The reason why I would go to Mexico out of all places is to visit my grandmother. I haven’t met her in person. Now, the Pacific Ocean is a very cool place to go. I’m interested to know what exactly is there. Many are interested on what’s out of our Solar System but we really can’t move on if we don’t even know much about our planet. It would be cool to be able to look around, and learn the history we don’t know that hides deep under the dark blue blanket of the Pacific.

Into the World of Fiction Written By: Tory Sedillo, Staff Reporter

Given the option to go anywhere, I wouldn’t want to stay confined to reality. I would go somewhere that isn’t possible to reach. I’d want adventure and danger, I’d want to be the main character of a story. I would go into the world of Marvel. Being that the Marvel Universe is so huge, there’s more of a chance that I could be a main character of my own story. I wouldn’t want to be any of the already exist-ing characters, as I can’t relate to any of them 100%. Plus why would you want to be somebody else when you can be yourself, but with powers.

Even if I was an or-dinary citizen, my favorite characters would be real. “Captain America” aka “Steve Rogers” would be really “The Winter Soldier” aka “BUCKY BARNES”, the love of my life; would be real. So yeah, our planet would get attacked often, and there’s a huge chance that I would even die. But it’s all worth it in the end. It would be completely worth it, I would give anything to even see Bucky.

Oscars Week ArticlesMarch EditionOscar Week!

Written By: Adriana Velazquez, Staff Reporter

This is Oscar week! The 90th Academy Awards is this coming Sunday. With that said, I strongly believe that the movie, Black Panther, is the best. It deserves the award for various reasons. It is like no other Marvel movie; it is unique in the way that it contains diversity and culture. Black Panther has a great storyline to it that follows all throughout the movie, and the action, as well as the plots, is all intensifying. It is difficult to shift your focus from the screen because it catches all eyes. As a matter of fact, I felt truly intrigued when the movie went beyond the focus of male superheros and displayed women empowerment. Not only were they seen as fierce military heros with important roles, but they were behind all the intelligence of their homeland, Wakanda. The actors all did a spectacular job of get-ting into character.

Written By: Lizeth Manzano, Staff Reporter A movie that I felt was really good was Ferdinand, by Carlos Saldanha, the animated film gave a really good message and was family friendly. The mes-sage of following your beliefs and not societies expectations was really good. The fact that Ferdinand not only has to go against all expectations but protects those who made fun of him for following his beliefs. Ferdinand does not believe nor understand at first in fighting the matador so he runs away from home after his father does not return from fighting. In the end, it is cute how he still faces him yet surrenders and earns the love of the audience and their support for not wanting to follow their expecta-tions. This movie was family friendly, funny, and was able to portray an inspir-ing message to children.

By: Tory Sedillo, Staff Reporter

I have a couple of movies that I like a lot. One of them is Captain America Civil War, in that movie, Steve Rogers and Tony Stark end up fighting because Steve wants to save his best friend Bucky. I love Bucky so much, so I was on Steve’s side 100%. Steve was trying so hard to prove to every-one that his best friend is a victim, and that he didn’t mean to do the things he did. This movie also introduces the new Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland (who in my opinion was less charming than Andrew Garfield). The movie ends with an epic battle between Tony Stark vs Steve Rogers/ Bucky Barnes. Over all, this movie is very emotionally draining for me, as I’m attached to many of the characters in this film. This goes without saying, but Sebastian Stan is one of my favorite Actors (he plays Bucky). I also really love Andrew Garfield, who was the better Spider-Man. I also love Tom Hiddleston who is best known for playing Loki from the movie Thor. I also love Ben Platt, who played Evan from Dear Evan Hansen.

Since the movies I love to watch are slap-stick comedies they don’t really come up during the award season, especially the Oscars. I don’t really watch the Oscars because the movies that are nomi-nated are either dramas or because I haven’t seen them. A movie that I never get tired of and that always cracks me up is Step-Brothers. It is also great because when I watch it with my dad we have a good time so it is a great bonding movie for the both of us. Will Ferrell in general is a great actor because all of his movies can make me laugh. The Other Guys and Anchorman are a few other movies that I love to watch. It would be amazing if his movies got a lot more credit and awards because he puts smiles on so many people’s faces.

The movie I thought was the best of 2017 was Baby Driver. The way the movie was made and the editing of the scenes were phenomenal. The way the music intensifies with the parts of the movie was one of the highlights and how it was able to captivate the way some of the old heists movies such as Ocean 11 and Heat. With the way they make the main character as the one doing the heists, they also show a side where they are the victim of the story and have you rooting for them to complete their heist.

Oscar week is coming sooner than expected and people are getting eager to find out the win-ners for the awards. My favorite movie or the movie I believe that is the best would have to be Identity Thief. The thing that fascinates me from this movie is that it has two of my favorite actors in one movie but not any kind of movie genre, specifically the comedy genre. My two favorite actors that are a part of this hilarious movie are Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman, making this movie a must watch in my books.

The movie I can never get bored of is “Forrest Gump”. This movie has always been one of my favorites ever since I first watched it. The main character For-rest has endured through his life from being bullied in school, to earning his way into playing college football, to joining the military where he meets the one and only “Bubba”and “Lieutenant Dan”. There are so many things that occur in this movie told through his innocence. However, the one person that everyone who has watched this movie knows that For-rest Gump is deeply in love with the one and only Jenny. Ever since they were kids they were always like “peas and carrots.” Throughout the movie, Jenny is a very rebellious and adventurous type of person who just had one dream which was to sing and play her guitar. However, the rough life she faced since she was young threw her in

a path that led her away from Forrest Gump. Although Jenny and Forrest have a child together they do not necessar-ily get to spend much time with each other because Jenny began to get sick and eventually died at the end. Tom Hanks really did capture my heart in this movie and it continues to be such a spiritual and emotional movie.

A really great movie to watch is 8 Mile. The movie introduces Eminem as the main character. Eminem shows a bit of his crazy psychological life as he was trying to get away from being a broke adult living in his mom’s trailer. It is a great movie for anyone that loves hip hop or likes seeing the underdog win. Emi-nem is an underdog because he is a young struggling lower class white boy in the African-American filled ‘313’ (area code of detroit). His first underground

rap battle didn’t go as smoothly as he would’ve liked. He came back and blew everyone away with his talent. He used rap to raise himself out of poverty. It is a really good story.
