It was in 1939 that Walter Phillips established Walter Phillips (Perivale) Ltd in Perivale, Middlesex, as a manufacturer of “Mounts and Albums of distinction and good taste”. During the 73-year history, the Phillips name has been involved with the production of presentation and commemorative albums for the Royal family and supplying the famous “This Is Your Life” red books.

Today Phillips has evolved into Phillips Plastics Ltd and can be found in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire where our main offices, design studio and production centre operate. We design and manufacture high quality ring binders, presentation boxes and cases, promotional packaging, point-of-sale displays and dispensers and many other custom made solutions in polypropylene, PVC, paper over board, PU, leather, foam and other specialist materials.

Qatar Foundation Project

Client: The Edge Picture Company

Each wall measured 4m x 4m

The panels locked together to form a solid wall shape

We were approached to produce a hexagonal walled structure, made in polypropylene with each face being 4 metres high and 4 metres wide. The structure had to be shipped out to become a centrepiece for a Senior Convocation ceremony in Qatar in two weeks time.

We developed a system whereby interlocking panels could be attached to a metal skeleton to form a brick wall. Each individual panel was to be printed to form a larger pattern. In this case, each wall represented a different university, where students could write their message of goodwill and gratitude for all to see.

By choosing polypropylene material the overall cost was reduced, all the print options were flexible and the entire structure could be illuminated from the inside. Within two weeks, we had designed and tested the panel system, die-cut each section at our UK based factory and sent them off on their journey. They arrived on schedule in Qatar, ready to be assembled by the students.

The final result was stunning and the client was extremely happy with the end product. The larger-than-life structure was a unique and eye-catching project and a key example of the innovative solutions Phillips Plastics can deliver. The production of bespoke ring binders forms a large part of our business, be it large or small quantity runs. More and more customers seem to be returning to a custom made product as they prefer the quality of finish over an off-the-shelf presentation binder.

With a vast range of colours, textures, patterns and thicknesses, PVC is the preferred material of choice for the production of professional company catalogues, training literature, instruction manuals and conference folders.

It can also be screen printed, litho printed, embossed, foil embellished, stitched and finished with metal corners, handles, locks and pockets to create a truly unique solution.

We offer high frequency, ultrasonic and heat welding services. The nature of the welding process ensures all joins and seams are highly secure giving our products a long life cycle and added value.

Welding is used to fuse together multiple layers of plastic using specialist equipment to produce flat folders, pockets and component parts.

We manufacture using three welding processes:

High Frequency - for use with PVC material.Uses high frequency electromagnetic waves that heat the PVC along the weld bars of a tool causing them to fuse together.

Ultrasonic - for use with polypropylene.A heat-free process using high pitched ultra sonic sound waves to disrupt the plastic at a molecular level causing it to fuse.

Heat - for polypropylene and bending applications.By using a welding bar heated to a temperature between 230°C - 250°C plastics can be bent to shape and bonded together.

The choice of materials for your new products is an important aspect of the production process. Different materials are suitable for different purposes and finishes so it is important to choose wisely.

When it comes to choosing materials, it is a good idea to be aware of the wide choice of options available. Performance, economics and aesthetics are all factors that need to be considered. We offer materials that are suitable for a wide range of uses. Some of our most popular materials include:

• Polypropylene - Available in an extensive colour range with high durability and water resistance. Perfect for over printing and die cutting• PVC - A wide range of colours, textures, finishes and effects in various thicknesses and strengths. Suitable for over printing and welding• Paper Over Board - Litho printed paper covers laminated over rigid board panels and finished with a gloss or matt seal.• PU and Leather - A classic material finish, laminated over rigid board panels that can be easily embossed. PU is a quality leather-effect material that provides a cost effective solution for a high value look.

Increasing environmental issues will be playing a part in your material selection. There are now some that are recyclable and contain recycled content. Product lifecycle can be dramatically increased by switching to a material such as polypropylene which will outlive its paper and card rivals and is 100% recyclable. We also provide a return to base programme for products in need of dismantling before recycling.



When producing hundreds or thousands of products consistency and quality are key. Die cutting is a widely used method to cut and crease profile impressions from materials such as polypropylene, solid board or corrugated card. We operate a number of die cutting processes in our production facility that have been customised to suit the substrates we work with.

When a product design has been approved an electronic file from our Kasemake CAD system is generated to produce a cutting forme. The flat design is burnt into a high-density plywood base panel using laser technology. The laser-cut template is then ‘ruled’ with various cutting and creasing blades being fixed into the wooden base. To finish the cutting forme, ejection rubber is applied around all cutting blades to achieve a clean cut without damaging the forme or die-cutting press.

We have a range of die cutting machinery including a clicking press for use with materials such as foam or expanded PVC and a platen machine that has been customised with a heated bed which is perfect for polypropylene.

Cutting formes are effective tools for production runs and can be produced at a relatively low cost. They are manufactured to a high level of accuracy ensuring consistency throughout the production run.

M25: Leave the M25 at Exit 20, and head north. At the roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A41 heading towards Hemel Hempstead/Aylesbury. Take the exit on A4251/London Rd following signs to Berkhamsted. Continue on the A4251/London Rd for 8.5 miles. Turn right at Billet Lane (Magestic Wine), then turn left onto Northbridge Road. Phillips Plastics will be on your right.

M1: Leave the M1 at Exit 8, and merge onto the A414. Stay on the A414 through Hemel Hempstead, onto the A4146, following the signs to Berkhamsted.Follow the road onto the A4251/London Rd.
