The Philippines is among the fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia, with upgrades to sovereign investment ratings confirming improvements in the country’s macroeconomic fundamentals. An economic update by the worldbank.org for the first quarter of 2016 notes that the Philippines remained a strong performer in the region, despite slow global growth.

Early in 2016, outgoing mayor and president-elect Rodrigo Duterte signs a P38B joint venture agreement (JVA) with property developer Mega Harbour Port Development Inc. that would change the landscape of this city’s coastline, with the creation of four artificial islands with a land area of 200 hectares.

One of the islands will have a land area of 75 hectares for an international port and five hectores for a government center that will eventually be turned over to the Davao City local government.

A central business district and shopping complex will comprise around 39 hectares.

Around 60 hectares of the reclaimed land will be allocated for residential and tourist centers, while around 41 hectares will be allocated for the development of townships.

In the near-term, economic growth is likely to remain strong and is projected to accelerate driven by domestic factors, robust private consumption and investments as implementation of private sector, budgeted infrastructure, and public-private partnership (PPP) projects gain momentum.

The Punta Fuego Marina now has a total of 210 watercraft in water and on trailers on site. This is the largest concentration of pleasure boats in the Philippines to date. They have stopped accepting new boats until the expansion plans of their land storage and marine berths have been formally approved.

The general consensus of this year’s Sea-Expo from exhibitors is that the show is by far the best in terms of foot traffic, sales and serious inquiries as compared to the other years the event has been running. With the rise of coastal developments in the country, market opportunity for industry players are great.

THE PHILIPPINE BOATSHOW & NAUTICAL LIFESTYLE EXPO: Sea-Ex concluded its 8th year on a high note, supported by the Tourism and Promotions Board and co-organized by the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines through its subsidiary, Fairs and More Inc.  Attendance was at an all time high with most exhibitors noting record sales as early as the first day. Sea-Ex is a three-day event that ran from Feb 19-21, 2016 at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City. It brings together international yacht distributors, local boat manufacturers, boat friendly resorts, coastal land developers, businesses that sell watersports gear, diving equipment, fishing accessories, marine rescue products, summer apparel and even automobiles in a true celebration of Philippine waters.

The show hosted a Forum: Harnessing the Philippines’ Coastal and Marine Sector for Growth with the main objective of providing a platform for the gathering of key stakeholders (government, private sector, non-government organizations) and other interest groups in the boating and tourism industries to discuss issues and challenges that beset these industries and present viable solutions, initiatives and best practices. Event highlights: the Philippine Home Boatbuilders Yacht Club (PHBYC) building an actual boat within the hall to show attendees that anyone can build their own boat at the same price as that of a smart phone, Aero 360’s pocket drone obstacle course, Hook Pro’s (fishing) line casting game and the Ginebra San Miguel Premium Gin open bar.

“As the exclusive distributor of the world’s leaders in the yachting industry, Europa Yachts is committed to attend the Philippine boat show SEA-EX every year. Since 2012, we have observed a constant improvement in terms of quality of the visitors at the show but the 2016 edition was a clear step-up in terms of lead generation and number of motivated yacht buyers.

SEA-EX is a great opportunity to evaluate our challenging market and we are confident that some of the leads generated at the show will become satisfied clients of Europa Yachts.”

Thomas Cachera, Europa Yachts Philippines Inc.Distributor of Azimut Yachts, Beneteau, Lagoon

“We really are proud of the outstanding players of the Marine industry propelling different technologies for various applications, and most especially to Sea-Ex’s continued promotion of yachts and boats. Their innovation fuels us to keep improving Motolite Pangmatagalan’s marine battery applications to further power and boost the up-and-coming marine vehicles.”

“Sea-Ex 2016 was a very positive experience for BICSPORT. We had a nice display of BICSUP products (boards, paddles & accessories). We sold 6 SUP boards during the show. We look forward to having BICKAYAK, BICWINDSURF & BICSURF products on display as well as more SUP board models during SEA-EX 2017.”

“As a first time exhibitor, I was sincerely impressed by the traffic and the quality of visitors. Having recently attended the Pimex phuket, the Istanbul boat show and the Thailand yacht show as exhibitor, I have made more contacts at your show than the other 3 combined. Not to mention it is always so much nicer to deal with smiling and cheerful Filipino prospects.”

– Eric Noyel, CEO Asia Marine Yacht ServicesDistributor of Admiral, Numarine, Hatteras, Sunseeker, Lampuga

“We at TEAMNONINO had fantastic results and judging by our sales order will busy for the next few months. This year due to media exposure we actually have a very serious inquiry from a company in French Polynesia who wants to have rights to sell our product. It just goes to show that companies abroad with the help of SEA EX are really noticing the growth of the Philippine boating industry.”

– Noli ManasTeamnonino

“It was a great opportunity for us to promote our upcoming sailing events as well as meet exhibitors with the same interest in sailing. It was an experience worthwhile. ‘Til next year!”
