President’s Message

Well, summer’s end is fast approaching but the research is still being done. With cooler weather will come more time to reflect on what you have found and what you still need to locate. Fall brings the chance for us here at PCGS to do some more cemetery walking and collecting additional data for updating and increasing the available research material. The Picnic was held in July at Lions Club Park in Rolla. To the ones that attended, I say thanks and I hope you enjoyed the chance to just talk to each other. It was a delightfully pleasant day. We have two great programs planed for the September and October meetings. September’s program will be on The Trail of Tears, done by a presenter from Oklahoma. We are pleased to have Pat Lubert from the Missouri State Archives for the October meeting. She will present a program on the State Archives website and what is available for genealogists. Both meetings will be held at the Phelps County Courthouse community room. Check out our webpage at http://www.rollanet.org/~pcgs/ for additional information on the PCGS upcoming events. Remember, we have elections in NOVEMBER and we need good dedicated people to fill the officer positions. I would like to say thank you to everyone for all your hard work with the PCGS. And thank you to those who have provided donations. We are on our way to getting a new Micro-Film reader/printer. We still have a ways to go but we have a good start. The goal of PCGS is to continue helping researchers by providing information and preserving historical records. Keep up the researching. Sincerely, Reba Fryer, PCGS President 2006

_____________ **** PCGS NEWS **** _______________________

ITEM: From the desk of Sheila Wood, PCGS Vice-President: The Phelps County Genealogical Society met on the 15th of August at the Chamber of Commerce Visitors’ Center in Rolla. We had an outstanding speaker and wish you could have heard him also. He was Dan Lashley, Section Chief, Cadastral Surveys, Land Survey Program, Geological Survey Resource Assessment Division Rolla, MO. Mr. Lashley played the part of Private John B. Thompson telling of his experience as a member of the Corp of Discovery. Emphasis was placed on the scientific instruments used by Captains Lewis and Clark to accurately map the water route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. Captain Clark produced about 140 maps during the expedition and in 1812 one large composite map was made of the entire route. When compared with 21st century satellite imagery of the Western United States, the accuracy of Clark’s map is astounding. I can say the speaker was also astounding (see the photo below). Our September general membership meeting speaker will discuss the Trail of Tears. Wanda Elliott from Oklahoma will come to the Phelps County Court House to speak. Be there!!

ITEM: As reported in the May 2006 Quarterly, PCGS is restarting a Surname Index that lists members and the families they are researching. A form is supplied on the next page for those members that want their information to be included in the directory. Please indicate what you want to be published by 1) circling Yes or No after Name, Address, Phone, and E-mail, and 2) giving any family names that you are researching. Please supply PCGS with permission to publish by signing your name at the bottom of the form and include the date. One can first copy and then complete the form, or simply recreate the basic components of the form in a letter and send it to PCGS.

ITEM: The PCGS picnic held at the Rolla Lions Club Park in July was a success! Plenty of food and drinks, and a healthy turnout made the Saturday afternoon even more delightful. It is the intention of PCGS to try and make this an annual event so folks can get together in a more informal setting to relax, enjoy themselves, and maybe even discuss genealogical issues! ====================================================================

Phelps County, Missouri____ Old Marriage Licenses/Certificates

The old marriage licenses/certificates listed below

may be claimed by a descendant of the participants.

This is a continuation of the old marriage licenses/certificates published in the 2002 quarterly number 3. Many of these licenses were claimed years ago, but the remaining old licenses were given to the Phelps County Genealogical Society so that we might find the family members who would like to have them. All you need to do to claim the license of your ancestor is to send a Number 10 (approx, 4-1/2 x 9-1/2 inches) self addressed stamped envelope (SASE) with one first class stamp (currently 39 cents). The licenses will be given away on a first come, first served basis, so someone may have already claimed the license you are interested in. The address is: Phelps County Genealogical Society P.O. Box 571 Rolla, Mo. 65402-0571 [email protected]

Glimpses. . .125 years ago..1881 From The Rolla Weekly Herald, Thursday September 29, 1881

PREAMBLE AND RESOLUTIONS The following was presented to the City Council on Tuesday, and unanimously adopted by

that body, and ordered spread on the city records. Gentlemen of the Council: I submit for your consideration and adoption, the following preamble and resolutions, and

hope they may be adopted, and, by your order, spread upon the records, on a page thereof, act apart and dedicated to the memory of our late distinguished president.

Whereas; It is known that James A. Garfield, President of the United States, is dead, from the shot of an assassin, after a long and heroic suffering, it becomes a solemn duty for this body to put on record their condemnation of the atrocious crime, with an expression of their deep regret for the untimely end of the deceased, and to declare their profound admiration of his noble courage throughout the terrible ordeal, and of his exhalted character as a patriot and a man. Therefore be it

Resolved, By the City Council of the city of Rolla. 1st. Not with unmixed grief we mourn the tragic fate of the second martyr Chief Magistrate of this Great Republic, and find human words inadequate to express the heartfelt horror in every breast for the enormity of the crime and of the detestation for the monster guilty of it commission.

2nd. That we desire to mingle our cordial sympathy and unavailing regrets with those of the whole American people, and especially with the bereaved widow and children, and the venerable mother of the illustrious dead in their great affliction. W. G. Pomeroy, Mayor. From The Rolla Weekly Herald, Thursday August 18, 1881

COPPER [Vichy Springs Chronicle]

For many years it has been known that copper abounded in this vicinity – that at an early day a rich mine had been discovered, but those who knew the exact locality had died or left the county and so little value was attached to it, that it had almost been forgotten. A few days ago an old lady pointed out the locality, when prospecting commenced which yesterday resulted in the discovery of rich minerals and in apparent inexhaustible quantities.

It does seem wonderful what provision nature has made for this county. A few months ago there was nothing except the beautiful prairie on our north to attract attention, now we have added to our health restoring water, the richest veins of lead, abundance of iron ore, and now when we chronicle this valuable discovery of copper, our mind is filled with amazement. Nature has truly made wonderful provision for our section.

EDGAR SPRINGS Town was lively on Saturday. Eph Bales, from Big Piney, and John Gresham, of this

place, had a knock down. Gresham fell on the bottom. Squire Asher assessed the damages at one dollar and trimmings. Eph Bales who seems to be half horse and half Alligator, after the Squire had gone home, gave Gresham another punching and took leg ball. Gresham don’t see where the fun comes in.

EDGAR SPRINGS The past week was quite lively. Ingram cut Levi Harman in eight places with a knife. The

row was about a horse trade. The matter will be legally investigated. One Mahaney has been on the war path. He stopped the mail, flourished his pistol around

generally, and swore vengeance against “Uncle Sam’s” officers.

he survived only a short time. The deceased was about 35 years of age an industrious, hard working man. A wife and five children are left without a husband and father’s care. February 5, 1897 Kluner, Mr. _____ Sr. The Times last week mentioned the afflictions of the Kluner family living on Long Branch, nine miles west of Vienna, and we are again pained to announce the death of Mr. Kluner, Sr., which occurred last Friday. He was laid to rest in the cemetery at Viessmann last Saturday. Within ten days a family of seven persons have been reduced to two, only William and his sister Bettie remaining. Sad though it be, we must bow to the will of him who “doeth all things well.” [Maries County Times] February 5, 1897 Neighbors, William Died, at the family residence, three miles west of this city, on Sunday, January 31, 1897, William Neighbors, aged 73 years. The deceased was one of the oldest settlers in this part of the county, having come here when quite young, and was a highly respected citizen, being a devout member of the Christian church for a number of years. The funeral took place from his late home Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock. The remains were interred at the Wishon burying ground A bereaved widow and three children are left to mourn his taking away. February 5, 1897 Hodgen, Isaac G. Inmate (Soldiers’ Home) Isaac G. Hodgen, of whose illness and partial paralysis we made mention of last week, was visited on Sunday by Dr. Kimbrough, from the office of Dr. W. H. Mudd, nephew of Mr. Hodgins in St. Louis, who came to consult with Dr. Fulbright, the Home physician, as to care of the patient, who, up to Sunday morning, showed some improvement. During the forenoon of Sunday a serious change indicated a recurrence of the paralytic attack, and he grew steadily worse till death ended the struggle at 10:20 p.m. The remains were forwarded to St. Louis on the Monday night train, and then sent next day for interment in his own family lot at Pittsfield, Ill., beside those of his wife. His illness and death cast the first shadow over the inmates and officers of the Home, by all of whom Mr. Hodgen was respected for his quiet industrious ways, and uniform kindliness of manner and respectful bearing toward everyone. The following is gathered from the Home records: “Captain Isaac G. Hodgen was born in Hardin County, Kentucky, May 29, 1828. His early life was spent in Illinois. He enlisted in Co. A. 99th Ill. Vols., in August, 1862 and served till close of the war, being when mustered out July 31, 1865, Captain of Company D, of same regiment, a position acquired by meritorious service and honorable promotion. Most of the later years he had lived in St. Louis. He was a member of Ransom Post of that city by whose officers he was indorsed when an applicant for admission to the Home, effective Dec. 14, 1896. A month or so before coming to St. James he had visited Pittsfield, where a sister lives, and while there busied himself several days in having the old burial spot re-arranged and put in order, and since his illness expressed the wish should he die to be sent there for burial beside his wife—a desire his relatives have now tenderly carried out. February 5, 1897

*** The effects of the late Mr. Hodgen were expressed to his daughter, Mrs. Ella Hodgen Carroll, St. Louis on Wednesday last, as directed by Dr. H. H. Mudd of that city, a nephew of the deceased. February 12, 1897
