Vipaaka is final transformed state of drugs after digestion. According to taste and effect on doshas, it is of three types: 1. Madhura 2. Amla 3. Katu

According to properties, it is of two types: 1. Guru ≈ Madhura 2. Laghu ≈ Katu, Amla

Vipaaka is inferred from actions, so knowledge of action is essential to know vipaaka of the substance

Medhya Rasayana

‘Medha’ means intellect and/or retention ‘Rasayana‟ means therapeutic procedure or preparation that on regular practice will boost nourishment, health, memory, intellect, immunity and hence longevity. Medhya Rasayanas are group of medicinal plants with multi-fold benefits, specifically to improve memory and intellect by Prabhava (specific action). They improve all the three faculties of mind: a) Dhi (Intellect/Acquisition power) b) Dhriti (Retention power) c) Smriti (Memory/Recalling power)

Medhya Rasayana

Medhya Rasayana is a group of 4 medicinal plants that can be used singly or in combinations. (Ca.Chi.1/3:30-31)

1. Mandukaparni – Centella asiatica – Indian pennywort 2. Yasthimadhu – Glycirrhiza glabra - Liquorice 3. Guduchi – Tinospora cordifolia - Guduchi 4. Shankhpushpi – Convolvulur pleuricaulis – Morning

glory Other medhya dravya mentioned in classical texts are: • Brahmi – Bacopa monniera • Jyotishmati – Celastrus penniculata • Kushmaanda – Benincasa hispida • Vachaa – Acorus calamus • Jataamaansi – Nardostachys jatamansi • Ashwagandhaa – Withania somnifera

1. Shita Virya and Madhura Vipaka- promotes kapha and enhances “Dharana Karma” (i.e., retention of cognition) e.g., Yastimadhu, Bramhi, Sankhpushpi etc.

2. Ushna Virya and Tikta Rasa- it promotes pitta and enhances Grahana and Smarana (i.e., grasping power and Memory) e.g., Guduchi, Vacha, Jyotishmati etc.

Medhya drugs act at different levels - a) at level of Rasa b) by stimulating and improving the function of Agni c) By improving circulation of Rasa by opening and

cleaning the micro channel and thus improving Medhya function. (Singh AK, et.al. 2014)

Effects of Medhya Rasayana and Yogic practices in improvement of short-term memory among school-going children Ayu; 2013

Atul Shankar Sarokte, Mangalagowri V. Rao

90 (10 – 16 years)

Group A – Control Group B – Medhya Rasayana (4) – 2 g twice daily Group C – Yogic practices

Group B showed most effective results for short-term memory test pictures and (2) serial recall effects test using memory scope. Group C showed significant improvement with respect to subjective and objective parameters in mini mental status scale

Group B showed to be the most efficient among the three groups. Medhya Rasayanas are quick in action and bring about improvement in memory faster when compared with Yogic practices.

Clinical evaluation of Kushmanda Ghrita in the management of depressive illness Ayu; 2011

Rajni Chandre, B. N. Upadhyay, K. H. H. V. S. S. Narasimha Murthy

35 10 ml of Kushmanda Ghrita - twice: morning and evening with 40 ml of lukewarm water for 1 month

Found statistically significant improvement in depression rating scale, Hamilton anxiety rating scale, immediate memory span direct and indirect test along with clinical symptoms.

Kusmanda Ghrita improved depressive illness patients probably because of its medhya prabhava and can be considered to possess antidepressant effect.
