Body of ArtPhaidon Editors

Interestingly, and surprisingly, there has never been an illustrated book focusing on the body, one that gives not only a complete history of how the human form has been represented in visual culture over time, but also how it has become – literally and metaphorically – the canvas on which and through which we talk about human experience.Unprecedented in its scope and rigour, Body of Art spans art Western and non-Western, ancient to contemporary,

figurative, abstract and conceptual. Works are curated by theme into ten chapters: beauty, the absent body, religion and belief, bodies and space, sex and gender, emotion embodied, power, the body’s limits, the abject body and identity. Dynamic juxtapositions create an original and thought-provoking take on this most fundamental of subjects and an illustrated timeline provides broader historical and social contexts.

With works ranging from eight-armed Hindu gods and ancient Greek reliefs, to John Singer Sargent’s intriguing Madame X, from Robert Mapplethorpe’s seductive photographs to Sarah Lucas’s provocative sculptures, this is more than a book of representations. Bringing to life the diversity of cultures through the prism of the body, it celebrates and communicates art with accessible scholarship, to thrill and inform both enthusiast and expert.

‘Gates’s practice is based on humble materials "potent" with associations. His aesthetic is minimalist but infused with a strong sense of narrative; his thronelike, custom-upholstered shoeshine stands, and framed, rolled-up fire hoses all speak to aspects of black history and black daily life.’ – Lilly Wei, Art in America

‘ The Mick Jagger of social practice, Theaster Gates has become the world’s most recognisable face for twenty-first-century socially engaged art.’

‘ Theaster Gates has a commitment to his art and to the community that’s unique. He didn’t get known here and pack up and leave. He dug deep.’ – Rahm Emanuel, Mayor of Chicago

The Noguchi Museum | A Portrait Tina Barney & Stephen Shore

The Noguchi Museum | A Portrait provides a unique perspective on the artwork of Isamu Noguchi and its setting in the Noguchi Museum. Renowned contemporary photo-graphers Tina Barney and Stephen Shore turned their attention to different facets of the museum – Shore to the artwork and Barney to the museum’s visitors – and together their images capture the unique spatial experience of the only museum

in the United States designed by an artist for the display of his own work.

Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988) was one of the twentieth century’s most important and critically acclaimed artists. Among his many innovative projects are sculptures, gardens, public spaces, playgrounds, ceramics, as well as furniture, lighting, and set designs. Several of his designs – including the 1947 glass-topped table

for Herman Miller and the Akari Light Sculptures – are still produced today.

In 1985, Noguchi opened the Noguchi Museum in Long Island City, Queens. The converted 1920s industrial building displays a selection of Noguchi’s work in both permanent and rotating exhibitions. It remains a popular destination of the New York art scene.

Steven HollRobert McCarter

This is the most comprehensive monograph available on Steven Holl, one of America’s greatest living architects, and the only one written with the architect’s cooperation. Written by award-winning author and architecture critic Robert McCarter, it presents Holl’s most important works, realized and unrealized, from 1974 to today, and examines the architectural

principles and concepts that underlie his designs. Holl’s buildings are examined through analysis of his design process and ideas, as well as his methods and materials of construction. Experiential ‘walk-throughs’ of Holl’s buildings place the reader within the spaces and describe how they act to engage all the senses.

Holl is rightly considered the greatest of the third generation of American modern architects, following the first and second generations of Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Kahn, whose work has served as both a source of inspiration and a standard for Holl’s work. This is the first in-depth survey of his work and its influence on the next generation.

'To call Mr. Ost a flower designer is akin to calling Annie Leibovitz a shutterbug.' – Anne Raver, The New York Times

Daniel Ost’s work bridges the gap between floral design and art. Inspired by elements from the natural world, he works with flowers, branches, and plants to create large-scale, site-specific installations. His work has

more in common with sculpture and set design than table arrangement. It is inspired by his interest in Japanese culture and aesthetics, and circumscribed by the seasonality of his materials, which include plants of all varieties. His many varied projects include the backdrop to Dries Van Noten’s spring 2007 collection, as well as floral installations at the Venice Biennale, the Museum of Islamic Art

in Qatar, and the Izumo Shrine and Toji Temple in Japan. This is the most comprehensive monograph available on the Belgium artist, highlighting his celebrated works while providing an overarching view of his career. It will appeal to art, design, and floral enthusiasts as well as creative professionals, offering a rich source of visual inspiration.

It tells how Grace transformed static studio portraiture into beguiling tableaux and turned location shoots into sweeping narratives in magical locations, two of the genres that she is credited with bringing to the history of contemporary fashion photography.

There is model Jerry Hall in Communist Russia, with Sir Norman Parkinson trying to smuggle the film out. Aretha Franklin appears as the queen in a version of Snow White photographed by Bruce Weber. A sequence depicts photographing the infamous grunge collection of the mid-1990s with Steven Meisel and the model Kristen

Stephen Shore travelled to Ukraine in 2012 and again in 2013, just prior to the current political upheaval, to visit 35 Holocaust survivors, most of whom were women. In the photographs of the survivors and their homes, Shore visually explores their collective experience as seen through quotidian details, and leaves open the question as to how the history of the Holocaust informs the viewer’s reception of the work.

Shore’s portraits highlight the resilience and hope of Ukraine’s survivors – despite the tragedies of their past.

The photographs are intimate whilst maintaining the unsentimental formal order of his photography. Portraits of survivors’ homes are interspersed with photographs of the contemporary Ukrainian landscape – both rural and urban – within which they now live.

The essay by Jane Kramer, who has written The New Yorker’s ‘Letter from Europe’ since 1981, will situate the survivors and their stories in the historical context of Ukraine’s modern history with a particular emphasis on the place of Jews within that history.

A powerful and haunting visual record, Stephen Shore’s portraits highlight the resilience and hope of Ukraine’s Holocaust survivors-Shore’s latest project is his most emotionally-charged to date and the first photobook on this subject-An important cultural document, Survivors in Ukraine sits between the traditions of the diaristic colour photobook that Shore himself pioneered with Uncommon Places (1982) and American Surfaces (2005), and that of the ‘concerned’ photographer using the camera as witness to conflict and other historic events

Jane Kramer has been a staff writer at the New Yorker since 1964 and has written the ‘Letter from Europe’ since 1981, covering various aspects of European culture, politics, and social history. She was previously a staff writer for the Village Voice.

Stephen Shore is one of the most influential photographers living today and has been director of the Photography Program at Bard College since 1982. His photographs from the 1970s established him as a pioneer in the use of colour in art photography. His work features in museum collections around the world including the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Tate, London.

'A wonderful new book […] by the presiding genius of modern studio ceramics, Edmund de Waal.'– Royal Academy magazine

The history of ceramic art is ingrained in the history of mankind. Clay is one of the very first materials ‘invented’ by man. An essential part of our lives, it has been moulded, thrown, glazed, decorated and fired for over 30,000 years in order to preserve and transport food and water. In more recent times clay has been used not just by artisans and potters, but also by artists, designers and architects. The Pot Book is the first publication to document

the extraordinary range and variety of ceramic vessels of all periods, from a delicate bowl made by an unnamed artisan in China in the third millennium bc, or a jug made in eighteenth-century Dresden, to a plate made by Picasso in 1952, or the vases of Grayson Perry today. Each entry is sequenced in alphabetical order by the name of the artist/potter, the school, or style, creating a grand tour through the very finest examples of the artform.
