The Pearl Academy of Fashion (PAF) was established in 1993 by theLittle People Education Society which is a statutorily registered body.It has grown from 47 students in its first year to over 1,400 students at3 campuses in Delhi, Jaipur and Chennai.

In 1995, the Academy entered into collaboration with NottinghamTrent University (UK), so that the curriculum was internationallycompatible. The collaboration has made great strides and recentlythe two institutions celebrated a decade of partnership, aiming tobe at the core of India’s fashion manpower development.

Change is thick in the air, with rising confidence levels of Indian fashionindustry. At Pearl, courses have been recast to adapt to the changes.It is with a genuine sense of satisfaction and fulfilment that we presentto you our Prospectus for the Academic Year 2008-09. With six coursesat PG level (and six at UG level), the Academy offers a wide rangeand variety of courses meeting the aspirations of different individuals.

Today, PAF enjoys a high stature as a prestigious provider of educationand training for the fashion and related sectors, with a number ofalumni in key positions in the industry all over the world. The Academytakes pride in its high calibre faculty, outstanding track record instudent exchange, and international networking and placement.

GLOBAL DIMENSIONSThe fashion industry is estimated to account for a worldwideconsumption of the value USD 1,200 billion (Mark Tungate, FashionBrands), comprising 66 percent clothing and the rest consisting offootwear, jewellery, accessories and cosmetics. Developed countrymarkets like USA, EU, Japan, Canada, Australia, Northern Europe,Switzerland, New Zealand together make up nearly 80 percent ofthis consumption. However, the spotlight is now shifting toconsumption in rest of the countries, where prosperity is on the riseand is leading to superior growth rates in fashion consumptioncompared with that in the established markets.

Owing to the nature of fashion markets, the industry is highly brand-driven as well as acutely segmented. Further, it is extremelycompetitive now, with clothing being freely traded. Besides, a majorproportion of goods have a short shelf-life. This has compelled thatthe consumption of the developed country markets is necessarilymet by manufacture in and supply from developing countries.Besides, retailing is a very significant dimension of reaching theconsumer. The functions of merchandising, operations, marketingand retailing, hence, constitute the frontend parts of a business whichtransform the creative output of designers into wares that arecoveted by consumers in all parts of the world.

No matter where the goods are manufactured or retailed, theindustry is highly human-resources intensive and, therefore, relies onstrong management systems and practices, information-technologydriven operations, branding, marketing and communications,strategic planning, human resources management and, further,logistical management.

INDIAN FASHION BUSINESSIndia is one among the principal suppliers of fashion goods to the world.Until 2004, India’s potential was restricted owing to quota regulation oftextile and clothing trade. But since 2005, trade is liberalized and India ison the path to realizing its true potential already, as the exports of 2006-07 indicate. Moreover, all experts highlight that fashion markets will beprincipally dominated by supplies from China and India.

The fashion market in India is itself growing phenomenally, clocking upannual growth at 20-30 percent. Images Fashion reveals in its recentyearbook that the clothing fashion and textile accessories markettouched above Rs. 98,000 crores in 2006, having enlarged from Rs 66,000crores in 2002. Today, nearly 75 percent is estimated to be ready-to-wear, of which only 25 percent is branded. Witness the number of foreignbrands, particularly luxury brands, that are making a beeline for the Indianconsumer. This is going to boost, with the Government allowing foreignretailers to set shop in India.

In foreign markets, India has been recording phenomenal growth ratesin terms of textile and apparel exports. The industry’s confidence levelhas so perked up that collectively the Indian textile and apparel industryexpects to reach a turnover of USD 110 billion by 2012, of the exportearnings will be Rs. 50 billion.

Put together, the domestic and foreign markets have generated a pushfor fashion industry growth, reflected in a manufacturing and retail boom.The modern fashion industry channels itself through modern retail formatsto reach the customer. As a result, the last decade has seen theemergence of mall shopping among Indian consumers, especially inthe metros and big cities. Nearly 600 malls are already planned tobecome operational in a few years time; very recently Reliance Industrieshas launched USD 0.75 billion project for retail expansion in the country.The retail industry has, therefore, fantastic growth potential for trainedmanpower

EVOLVING WITH THE INDUSTRYSince inception in 1993, Pearl Academy of Fashion has focused onfashion business and managerial education in both under-graduateand post-graduate curricula.

There have been post-graduate courses of varying durations, inkeeping with the Academy’s avowed policy of educational provisionin line with industry needs, focused on merchandising, production,fashion, retail.

With growth in industry maturity, the duration of studies haslengthened as well as broadened. This goes to prove that theAcademy is very dynamic in adjusting and adapting to the changingenvironment. Merchandising prepares you to join apparel and accessoriesindustries. Manufacturing focuses on garment production. Retail isdirected at the retailing sector. The Fashion Design courseemphasises entrepreneurship and business, along with technologyand design. Fashion Marketing aims to impart comprehensivemanagerial skills for marketing, luxury & high – end fashion brands.Textile design will place students in the home textiles and furnishingssector.

There are over 300 students enrolled in PG courses at present andnearly 600 persons have been awarded PG diploma in fashionmanagement streams since 1993 and are well placed in industry asprofessionals in merchandising, production, fashion design andretailing or as enterprise owners in India or abroad.

AIMThis course aims to train students in the latest techniques andtechnology in the garment manufacturing industry for productionfunctions.

SCENARIO AHEADThe significance of production is paramount in today’s fashion world.Productivity and quality are the two mantras for commercial successof any project. Production personnel are the keys to achieve thissuccess. As the customer has become very demanding in terms ofcost, quality and timely deliveries, the need for specialized peoplein production is very high in the industry. This course is designed tobuild a sound technical knowledge base for the students andacquaints them with the tools for effective managerial decisionmaking. From this course the student stands to gain technical prowessthrough advanced work study. The education methodology includesclassroom lectures, laboratory assignments and work shop simulationof situations faced in the garment industry.

GETTING STARTEDThe curriculum starts with basic concepts and knowledge in coretechnical subjects, business, and allied studies - related to thebusiness of fashion. The first semester offers basic modules of learningto provide a foundation. Accordingly, there are modules oncomponents of basic garments; elements of fashion, fibre/yarn typesand properties that they give to a fabric; a basic understanding ofmerchandising functions; key aspects of production, such as cutting,sewing, finishing and management principles. Verbal, written andbusiness communication skills of the students are honed throughoutthe semester.

BUILDING-UP KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLSThe second semester initiates the build-up of core manufacturingknowledge and skills such as advanced production systems, latestmachinery and technology, advanced understanding of weaves andknit, garment washing, cost-control, research methodology. Written andverbal communication skills are emphasized.

SUMMER PLACEMENT – INTERNSHIPAfter the second semester the student undergoes an Internship in theindustry, for which arrangements are made by the Academy. Thisexposure generates a rationality and pragmatism and encourages themto correlate classroom learning with what happens in the industry.

ADVANCED LEARNINGThe third semester follows the internship with an analysis of best practicesin the industry in the areas of materials management, productionplanning and control, plant lay-out, product analysis and operationalplanning, quality assurance, CAD / CAM and human resourcedevelopment.

ORIGINAL APPLICATIONIn the fourth, which is also the final semester, the student undertakes amentored individual project which integrates and applies all learningfrom the programme. This project is designed to allow for a holisticapplication of learning and the students will need to do a factory set upproject including financials. It gives them an opportunity to undertakean application that calls them upon to exert knowledge and problem-solving skills in manufacturing and technology. The best dissertationsreceive special awards and such awardees have an opportunity topresent their works to the industry at a public forum.

AIMThis course aims to train students comprehensively with concepts,practical skills and techniques required by professional FashionMerchandisers.

SCENARIO AHEADIn the global fashion industry, merchandising is a specialist functionthat involves a high level of planning and systems. Merchandisersliaise between the market and business end of fashion outside theorganization and the creative and production ends within. They areinvolved in business planning & analysis, buyer management, andorder fulfillment. Merchandisers are also required to steer productdevelopment, thereby enhancing competitiveness through thevalue addition route. With the tremendous growth of the apparelindustry domestically and overseas, current industry trends clearlyindicate a huge requirement of professionally trained merchandisers.The Fashion Merchandising course fulfills this need in the ApparelIndustry.

AIMModern retailing has significant front end managerial tasks such asin merchandising, customer relations, shop floor management, visualmerchandising, ware housing, store management. The courseprepares students with the competences to man these functionsfor executing such tasks.

SCENARIO AHEADRetail is one of India’s largest industry, accounting for over 10% ofthe country’s GDP and around 8% of the employment. It is one ofthe fastest growing, most dynamic segments of the economy. Thewhole concept of shopping has altered in terms of format andconsumer buying behaviour, ushering in a revolution of modernshopping in India. Accordingly, the retailing industry in India,estimated at INR 9,300 billion (2003) is expected to grow 5% p.a. andorganized retailing is estimated to be on its way to becoming anastounding INR 1,000 billion by 2010.

GETTING STARTEDThe course starts with an introduction to the retail industry and thevarious existing and future retail models and to the basic elementsof the fashion market. The main areas of learning are retail strategy,retail merchandising, and marketing and its relation to retail.Technical skills are given a strong foundation through basic inputson fabrics and garments. Emphasis is also laid on developingcommunication skills.

BUILDING-UP KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLSAs the course progresses, additional emphasis is given to application ofthe accumulated skills and knowledge of special focus areas such asstore planning, retail promotions, retail market analysis and marketing,consumer behaviour analysis, retail buying and merchandising, visualmerchandising, using specialized retail software wherever required. Youalso continue to enhance your knowledge of garment patterns andacquire competence in an international language, viz, German. Bysemester three, the focus is on skills and knowledge acquisition throughproject-specific research and exploration. You move into areas relevantto retail specialism, combining sound managerial expertise withentrepreneurship skills in terms of store design and operations, ITapplications, and relevant organizational and legal aspects of the retailbusiness

INDUSTRY EXPOSURE AND APPLICATIONThe learning is completed with industry internship and the final dissertationin the last semester. The internship gives exposure to a realistic hands-onexperience of retailing skills and techniques. This is followed by aDissertation Project that demonstrates understanding and learning, andensures that you apply your skills and knowledge to find solutions todefined problems in the retail industry. The best dissertations receiveSpecial Accruals and such awardees have a further opportunity topresent their work to the industry at a public forum. There is also anoption to go to Germany on an exchange scheme in operation withLDT, Nagold, an internationally reputed retail academy closely tied withPearl, where you may acquire exposure to international standards ofretailing.

CAREERSRetail merchandisers are responsible for ensuring that right productsappear in the right store at the right time and in the right quantities. Thisinvolves accurately forecasting trends, planning stock levels andmonitoring performance. Department Managers oversee the sales andmanage stores, plan advertising campaigns and sales promotions, hireand train personnel, control inventories, draft budgets, and recommend,establish, or implement store procedures and policies. Managers mayalso oversee the remodelling of a store, plan store layouts and designdisplays, decide selling strategies, and represent the store in negotiationswith manufacturers. Visual Merchandisers are responsible forconceptualizing, designing and implementing window and in-storedisplays. Visual Merchandisers must combine their artistic flair andcreativity with technical know-how to set up appealing displays.

AIMThe fashion industry has large scope for small businesses to operate;but the industry is complex and dynamic, and business owners ormanagers must combine competencies in design, manufacture andmanagement to be successful. The course sets such a focus andhas a strong accent on entrepreneurship. It aims to preparetechnically qualified professionals to co-ordinate related activitiesin areas of design manufacture, and management with a productbias towards Indian/ethnic apparel.

SCENARIO AHEADThe fashion sector is very large in India, but organized sectoraccounts for a mere 25 percent and the rest is serviced by smalland medium businesses. A large proportion is occupied by the Indianstyle segment, not only in the Indian market, but also abroad whereIndians are concentrated. Indians will always consume a mix ofWestern and Indian Fashion wear and as, overall prosperity is rising,this segment is also booming.

GETTING STARTEDThis programme correlates design and technology with practices inthe Indian-style fashion industry. SUMMER PLACEMENT – INTERNSHIPAfter the second semester the student undergoes an Internship in theindustry, for which arrangements are made by the Academy. Thisexposure familiarizes the students with the actual atmosphere and workculture of the textile industry.

ADVANCED LEARNINGDuring semester 3, students are exposed to design development areasthrough advanced modules on weaving, home product development,printing and value addition and are directly related to construction andpattern making for prototype development. Related subjects onproduction methods, quality assurance, merchandising, retailing, supply-chain management help to round off holistic learning and to developentrepreneurial skills.

ORIGINAL APPLICATIONIn the fourth, which is also the final semester, the student writes a researchreport on any textile-related problem area and, thereafter, undertakesa mentored individual 10-week diploma project which integrates andapplies all learning from the programme. The project aims to produce acreative, well-informed and motivated professional with the ability toanalyse, synthesise and conclude various complex issues related todesign, planning and technical management. The best projects receivespecial awards and such awardees have an opportunity to present theirworks to the industry at a public forum.

Delhi is recognized as the fashion capital of India. It has led India’sexport foray in the fashion markets of the world and accounts fornearly 40 percent of the country’s apparel export. Delhi’s centrallocation serves as hub to a vast cottage sector spread in its hinterlandover Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh where embroidery and surfacecrafts excel. Their influence on Delhi’s rise as fashion metropolis isprofound, and, moreover, historical dating back several centuries.Delhi is also in the fore-front of the retail revolution that India iscurrently experiencing.

Pearl Academy of Fashion was born in Delhi and is today located atNaraina, an erstwhile garment manufacturing strong-hold of the city.Spread across Seven buildings, the Delhi Centre houses a plethoraof facilities; these provide the necessary infrastructure to run courseseffectively. THE LIBRARYThis houses more than 5,000 volumes of books and 1,200 boundvolumes of international periodicals and journals, which are regularlyupdated. Other reference material in the Library include currentIndian and international periodicals and journals, forecastmagazines, daily clippings from leading newspapers, CDs, Videotapes, and slides. The library is electronically organized using theinternational standard OPAC system

THE RESOURCE CENTREThis is a storehouse of comprehensively listed and neatly displayedsamples of fabrics, garments and accessories. Specimens ofgarments by Indian and foreign designers and by PAF students arealso on permanent display at the Resource Centre.

HOSTEL ACCOMODATIONIn order to facilitate the stay of 1st year outstation students, theAcademy offers limited hostel facilities in Delhi, Jaipur and Chennaifor girls only. The hostel offers a comfortable living environmentsupervised by a lady hostel warden, who is assisted by housekeepingstaff. Security arrangements are also closely monitored here. Hostelaccommodation is available strictly on a ‘first come first served’ basis.Application for hostel accommodation is received separately.

Showcasing Talent to the World

Our students receive unique opportunities annually to present theirwork to a wide audience through exhibitions and seminars.

PORTFOLIOEach year, the students of Fashion Design show case their final collectionat a public ramp event called “PORTFOLIO”. At this event, counted proudlyamong all prestigious fashion events,, dignitaries from government andbusiness, and families of students from the audience. Fashion Designersand media spot budding talent. Television Channels interview theachievers who are conferred awards in different category. Print mediacovers the event extensively.

FABRIC FOLIOThe Tex-Style Fair is an annual event organised by the International TradePromotion Organisation of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry toshowcase Indian textiles to the world. It is attended by 3000 buyers fromacross the globe. The Academy sets up each year, at the invitation ofITPO, pavilion – “FABRIC FOLIO” – to showcase hundreds of samples ofinnovative fabrics collected from industry all over India by the textile designstudents. The students also develop own samples along the fair’s themeand trends, as well as exhibit the samples resulting from different projectsundertaken in the course. The pavilion is set up and manned by studentswho conduct visitors through the display.

PEARL UTSAV“All work and no play make jack a dull boy”. Indeed, in the creativedisciplines, extra-curricular activities are closely linked with the formalcurriculum. “Pearl Utsav” is an event organised annually by students toserve as a platform for demonstrating talent in music, drama, dance andother performing arts. The event is organised by PLANCLAN, a studentbody. Talented students also have opportunities to represent the Academyat various institutional festivals / events held locally and elsewhere in India.

CONTINUUMCreativity knows no boundaries, no limits. Ideas from a continnum…….Every two years, the Academy organised an International Conference –“CONTINUUM”, inviting distinguished design professionals from all over theworld to speak on current themes and topics. CONTINUUM 06 focused on“Global Fashion Leadership: Evolving Directions and Future Perspectives”with 12 out of 18 speakers coming from overseas. Students play a veryimportant role in the conduct of Continuum and contribute creatively tothe promotion, communication, exhibition and display needs of theoccasion. Merit ScholarshipsThe Academy has instituted one Merit Scholarship in each coursewith at least 25 enrolments at all Centres to the enrollee who registersthe best performance through all pertinent admission tests and theinterview, subject to minimum requirements of performance.

The Scholarship waives payment of tuition fee only. The waiver isgranted in the first year, and carries on in the second year on conditionthat the awardee’s academic performance in the first year meetsthe prescribed standards of achievement.

In the event the waiver is withdrawn in the second year, tuition feebecomes payable; however, the Academy will facilitate the studentan educational loan from Punjab National Bank at a modest interestrate and comfortable repayment period. Such facilitation is alsoavailable to the awardees in the first year to cover other payablefees/charges, should it be so desired.

So when we areassessing you, we will be particularly evaluating your career focus,your creative and aesthetic sense, your level of commitment andenergy, your potential as a team member, your ability to handle stress,and of course, your communication skills. For this purpose, everyapplicant, whose eligibility is proven, passes through an entrance test,other screening methods and an interview. Those candidates, whoregister strong indications of both proficiency and aptitude, areselected in order of merit, subject to the overall intake.

TESTS FOR FM, GM, FR, FMGCandidates answer a 60 minute General Proficiency Test (GPT) inEnglish language to demonstrate their proficiency in language(comprehension, vocabulary, expression), mathematics(10th standard), logic, etc.

Candidates who answered any AIMA-MAT tests held in the twelvemonths prior to the date of the Academy’s entrance exam (seeinstructions in accompanying Declaration Form) and had scored atleast 500 will not have to appear in the GPT. Successful candidatesfrom the GPT and eligible AIMA-MAT scorers will be called for furtherscreening consisting of group discussion and individual interview.

TESTS FOR FDIW, TDHFCandidates answer the same General Proficiency Test (GPT) as above.AIMA-MAT participants with qualifiers as above will be exempted fromtaking the GPT.

However, all candidates have to appear in the Design Aptitude Test(DAT), which examines a candidate for aptitude in perception,illustration, drawing, visualization, colour sense, etc. Successfulcandidates from GPT/AIMA-MAT and DAT will be called for SituationTest and interview. The Situation Test is a group activity in which youwill have to collaborate with other candidates to implement a designbrief with provided materials within a stipulated duration of time.

HOW DO YOU APPLY?Application FormsThe Prospectus and Application Form are available at theAcademy’s counter against payment of Rs. 1000/- by cash orcrossed demand draft. In case you download the Application Formfrom our website www.pearlacademy.com your completedApplication Form must be accompanied by a crossed DemandDraft for Rs. 1000. Outstation candidates can obtain the Prospectusand Application form by sending a crossed Demand Draft for Rs.1150. The Academy will send the forms on receipt of such request(accompanied by the Demand Draft) by registered post. Thecompleted application form must reach the Academy latest by1730 hrs on the specified date in the accompanying date-sheet.Demand draft must be in favour of “Pearl Academy of Fashion”,payable at New Delhi.

HOW DO WE MAKE OUR SELECTIONS?Admission is based strictly on merit, judged from your performancein the written examination, group discussion, situational test, andinterview, as applicable.

INDUSTRY SPONSORED CANDIDATESAND FOREIGN NATIONALSA few seats are reserved, at a higher fee, for industry-sponsoredcandidates and foreign nationals. Such candidates will have tocompete against the reserved seats for admission.

GENERAL NOTES

Your Examination Roll number will normally becommunicated to you by mail. However, justin case you do not receive your Roll numberup to 4 days before the date of the entranceexam, you are advised to contact us.

Other centres may also be added, and suchinformation, as well as the exact location ofthe centres, will be notified later.

The Academy reserves the right to cancel,add, or change any Entrance Examinationcentre(s) for administrative reasons.

All courses commence in July 2008.Candidates appearing in their finalexamination can also apply provisionally.

The medium of instruction is English.

The Academy’s facilities are available tostudents six days a week: Monday-Friday(0830 - 1900 hrs); PAF-Jaipur (0830-1800 hrs.)and Saturday (0900 - 1500 hrs) ); PAF-Jaipur(0830 – 1500 hrs.), except on the days whenthe Academy is officially closed.

Any disputes arising out of the contents of thisprospectus will be subject to Delhi courts’jurisdiction only.

Pearl Academy of Fashion is a unit of LittlePeople Education Society registered underSociety’s Registration Act 1860.
