PFEW 2014 – Magical!!This is our post-program edition of PFEW News and, as the title indicates, it was a truly “magical” summer. By the time the first class arrived on Sunday, July 6th, we had received over 3,200 applications from rising juniors and seniors all across Pennsylvania. This was, by far, the largest number of applicants in our 36-year history. This was also a milestone year as, for only the second time ever, we ran five sessions to accommodate the exploding demand we are experiencing. By the time of the final “dual” Closing Banquets on the campuses of Lycoming College and Pennsylvania College of Technology, respectively, 2,106 students had graduated, also an all-time record! Over the five weeklong sessions, we ran 111 student “companies”, each one comprised of 18 to 20 students per team.

Nothing captures the emotion of the PFEW “journey” more touchingly than the testimonials of our students. Said Justin LeJeune of Seneca Valley Senior High School in Butler County, “It isn’t every day that you are able to listen to and meet some of

the best speakers you will ever hear in your life. But that is exactly what makes Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week so incredible; it is not an “every day” camp. It is a thought-provoking, sometimes stressful, always fun, demanding,

well-managed learning experience that I am honored to have been a part of.” And then, Natalie Sheffo of DuBois Area Senior High School in Clearfield County, “After my experience at PFEW, I better appreciate everything businesses do for their consumers as well as for their communities. At PFEW, I learned the value of teamwork and cooperation in a business setting. In order for a company to run smoothly, every member must feel valued and necessary to achieve a common goal.” The formula for the success of PFEW, as reflected by those moving sentiments expressed above, remains the same as it has for decades. Our fledgling “entrepreneurs” operate imaginary “companies” in competition with two other businesses that are manufacturing and distributing the same type of product in a computer-

simulated global economy. The simulation is extremely real-world, formerly used at the collegiate level, and is designed to give them the perspective of what it is like to operate a business in today’s highly competitive global marketplace.

As the quotes also indicate, PFEW is blessed to have perennial speakers who are, quite simply, the best in the world. From as far away as California, Alabama, North Carolina,

and Virginia, our speakers present a variety of topics to our students that are germane to the world of business including: Business Ethics, International Trade, Labor Issues, and many on Personal Growth and Leadership. The teams also have weeklong projects including the simulation of an Annual Meeting wherein they are the senior management delivering a presentation to imaginary shareholders of their corporation and also a full blown “Marketing/Advertising Presentation” including TV, radio, webpage design and print for their particular product. We hear over and over again that the aspect of working together as a team is one of the things about PFEW that sets it apart from any other educational experience.

And, how do the students themselves rate PFEW as an educational program? Remembering that the median age of our participants is sixteen, consider the following student evaluations completed at week’s end: 96.8% of our graduates reported to “have a better understanding of the American free enterprise system and their role in it”; 94.4% responded “their PFEW experience will be helpful in choosing their career”; and an impressive 98.5% reported that “their sponsor’s gift was well invested.”

Our five sessions were once again hosted by our two “partnering” colleges, Lycoming College and Pennsylvania College of Technology, both in Williamsport, that serve as our “homes away from home” each summer. This was our 25th year on the campus of Lycoming and our 7th year on the campus of Penn College. Both of these incredible learning institutions work tirelessly with our staff year-round to develop the complex and intensive schedules that mandate fourteen to sixteen hour

And the Winners Were...Each of our five weeklong PFEW sessions gives our young “management team members” a chance to experience the excitement of competition within the free market system in addition to learning about the system and how businesses operate within it. Each and every PFEW graduate is a winner, but we give special recognition to the student companies (and their Company Advisors) who raised the bar during each week.

Marketing/Advertising Competition

Throughout the week, each student company develops its own advertising campaign and marketing strategy. Each company member contributes his or her own special talents, using a limited amount of supplies, to create a TV commercial, radio spot, and Web page, as well as various other print advertisements. On Friday of each week, each company presents its campaign to a panel of marketing/advertising judges, where they discuss their campaign and strategy in terms of product features, target market, and selling price. Each company presents a two-year comparative shareholders’ Annual Meeting, also on Friday, analyzing its operation of the company to a panel of judges. For the summer program, and for the year following as part of our marketing, we need thousands of copies of our Program Brochure printed by the end of June. In order to meet the deadlines for layout, print, etc., we must have our “final” draft to the printers by early June. They are called the “heart and soul” of PFEW because it is under their guiding hands that the program comes alive each summer for our young entrepreneurs. The Raymond G. Weber award, these days, is a very rare and special event at PFEW. The only individual student award ever given, this is for a young man or woman who goes “above and beyond” what might be expected of them at the program and, indeed, frequently goes to a student who has stepped far outside their normal comfort zone in aiding the team in its work and projects. ...And Ten Years!Even contemplating what it takes to clear one’s schedule for a week every summer for three consecutive summers is daunting. But, as we ask the students at their Closing Banquets on Friday nights, can you imagine what it would take to give ten years of summers to any organization?! With training days, that works out to just about three months of someone’s life devoted to one particular cause and one particular mission – just an extraordinary commitment.

This year, it was truly a pleasure to honor four Advisors marking their decade-long service to PFEW with a special plaque presentation at the Closing Banquet of each of their weeks.

...How About Fifteen Years!And, as extraordinary as ten years of service is, when Company Advisors achieve their fifteen-year milestone, we do something just a bit more special. For more than fifteen years, quietly and without any fanfare, Wheeler Brothers, Inc. – a subsidiary of VSE Corporation and based in Somerset County, has been sponsoring hundreds of students to PFEW from a four-county region. As a result

of the company’s generosity, and that of its Foundation, students from Somerset, Bedford, Westmoreland and Cambria Counties have been able to take part in the program. These are largely rural areas with few sponsors, which makes the Wheeler gift all the more precious to the students, schools and communities of the region. Here, company President Chad Wheeler is presented with their 2014 “Founder’s Club” plaque, the highest honor annually accorded any of our supporters.

For more than two decades, Waste Management, Inc. has been a perennial “Founder’s Club” member, our highest annual honor, sponsoring literally thousands of students to PFEW from communities all across Pennsylvania. This year marked an extraordinary milestone for an extraordinary man. At the Closing Banquet for the students and volunteers of Week II on Friday evening, July 11th, Mr. Doug Harris was recognized and honored for his quarter-century of exemplary service to Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week and our mission.

For the past twenty-five years, Doug has lovingly mentored more than 450 young men and women as their Company Advisor, guiding them and coaching them through PFEW’s challenging curriculum and team projects. Moreover, as the former Engineering Manager for Croda, Inc. located in Mill Hall, PA, Doug was largely responsible for the annual scholarship gift that the company made for local students. Having retired from Croda a number of years ago and

And Then, Can You Imagine?relocating with his lovely wife, Connie, to North Carolina, Doug has faithfully continued his uninterrupted service as a Company Advisor to PFEW, making that long journey each summer. A lifelong volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America and very active with his church and many other civic activities, Doug epitomizes the true spirit of giving back.

Doug, there really aren’t words that can adequately convey what your service has meant to PFEW, your fellow volunteers, our staff and most importantly – your students.

Congratulations on this remarkable milestone and thank you so very, very much for the love and service you have given PFEW these many years. We wish you and Connie all the best in the future and look forward to seeing you next summer!

Recent Gifts

The Erie Community Foundation once again hosted its annual “Erie Gives” day on Tuesday, August 12th. During the twelve-hour event, gifts made to the more than 300 participating nonprofits received a “percentage match” for each gift received. PFEW was, for the third year, the organization that placed first in the day’s donations, ultimately receiving a check for $182,083. days for our young people, giving them one of the most intensive educational experiences that can be found anywhere. So much a part of our “family” have Lycoming College and Penn College become that, respectively, Lycoming now automatically offers $20,000 in scholarship grants ($5,000 every year for four years), and Penn College offers $8,000 in grants ($2,000 a year for four years), to any PFEW alumnus who enrolls as an undergraduate at either school. In a time when funding undergraduate education is becoming more challenging, these grants are just wonderful opportunities for our students.

It will come as no surprise to our readers that the staff is already well into the planning of PFEW 2015. Now that we have expanded to a fifth session, we have the opportunity to host even more students next summer and that is exactly what we intend to do. In a time when the American economy is still struggling and our companies are facing unprecedented challenges, it is very encouraging to know that so many young adults want to learn about what “free enterprise” means to the American way of life.

This issue of PFEW News is really to honor the thousands of men and women across Pennsylvania, who worked to help us prepare for our five summer sessions, and then those nearly 250 men and women who actually joined us to present PFEW to more than 2,000 eager young men and women. Our mission has never been more vital and we are pledged to re-double our efforts to make the 2015 sessions even better.
