The Petrovalve Plus rod pump valve and thePetrovalve Gas Breaker feature patentedtechnology in sucker rod pump valves. Thevast majority of producing wells employbottom hole sucker rod pumps which operateusing at least two valves known respectivelyas and valves. Ball andseat failure is the most common cause ofsucker rod pump down time resulting inrecurring costs that consume a significantportion of field maintenance and workoverbudgets. Our research and engineering hasdeveloped the next generation of PetrovalvePlus and Petrovalve Gas Breaker with largerflow areas and improved flow dynamics for alltypes of artificial lift wells.
The Petrovalve is composed of a hemisphere, penetrated by a stem which projects verticallyabove and below. This component is calledthe valve plunger. The stem guide above andbelow the Petrovalve plunger is manufacturedwith a single cross member containing anaperture for the stem. This creates aprecision guide stroke. Upper and lowerguides are identical and are reversible, as isthe seat. The guided valve plunger eliminatesthe inherent problem of violent uncontrolledcontact of the ball’s multisurface sealing areawith the valve chamber, thus eliminatingirreversible damage to itself and the chamber.
The Petrovalve promotes longer valve life, increased efficiencies and incorporates largerflow areas than comparably sized API insertball-and-seat valves. Increases in area rangefrom 27% to 112% in sizes 1.25 through 5.75.This increase may allow for increases inproduction where reservoir conditions permit.

Petrovalves are applicable on ALL artificial liftwells, including but not limited to high gas/oilratios, H2O/oil, heavy crude, and sandy wells. In addition, operators are now able to operatepumps efficiently in deviated and horizontalareas of the well bore. Some high volume wellsmay show increased production with our guidedvalves at the same strokes per minute or thesame production while allowing the operator toslow the pump down considerably. Reducingthe number of strokes per minute translates intoreduced lifting costs for fuel/electricity andreduced wear on the complete lifting system. This simple change in operating speed caneliminate millions of strokes per year whilemaintaining the same production level.
The Petrovalve Plus was initially designed forwells utilizing rod pumps. However, the largerareas and increased run times have shown theadvantages of installing Petrovalves in thestanding position for other types of artificial lift. These include gas lift, chamber lift, plunger lift, hydraulic and ESP installations, and steamflood. In addition to these applications,Petrovalves are also used as discharge andinjection valves, as a discharge valve to protectESP or hyrdraulic systems in the event ofcontrolled or unexpected shut downs and asinjection/back pressure valves for waterflood orwaste injection wells.

Big Bore Pumps
“Heavy oil areas” are often characterized by some ofthe most difficult pumping conditions in the industry, primarily because pumping 8 to 15 API oil is likepumping tar loaded with sand. The Petrovalve Plusdesign offers better flow dynamics and increasedflow capacity, proven with test results from heavy oilfields in Venezuela.
A ball moving wildly in front of the fluid trying to enterthe pump barrel greatly reduces the smooth flowrequired to fill up the barrel. Petrovalve Plus, byallowing the fluid to pass smoothly and equally on allsides, permits greater speed and accessibility forthe fluid.
Most ball-and-seat rod pump systems are landed ator near the vertical position in the well bore becauseof the reduced efficiency and high failure rate ofpumps as the angle from vertical increases.Petrovalve Plus valves are unaffected by the angleof installation. The Petrovalve was designed toallow high-efficiency pumping in any position.
The design problems associated with ball-and-seatvalves are nowhere more obvious than in big-borepumps. A 5 3/4” big bore pump contains a stainlesssteel ball that weighs 17 pounds. Because of theweight of the ball material selection for large valveshas been limited to stainless steel to keep weight incheck. However, the Petrovalve Plus allows for theuse of harder, corrosion resistant materials whichreduces the mass effect on the seat.
Conventional ball-and-seata c t i o n i n s t a n d a r dm a t e r i a l s r e s u l t s i nexcessive wear on both theball and seat.
The improved PetrovalvePlus has greater flow areathan existing conventionalhousings.
This triangle costs producers money byrestricting the reservoir’s capability to producefluid. The weight of produced fluid having to rise2 feet to the 3 foot level will result in lostproduction.
