    Molds

Scope of ApplicationThe Ductilityor Elongationismeasured by the distance towhich a sample will elongatebefore breaking when two ends

of a specimen briquette arepulled apart at a specified speedand at a specified temperature.

It may be used for qualityspecifications.

The Force-Ductilitymeasurestensile properties on the basisof the performed force andthe specimen strain.

A specimen briquette is pulledapart at a specified speed andat a specified temperatureuntil the briquette ruptures or aspecified strain is achieved.

The Elastic Recovery ismeasured by the recoverablestrain determined aftersevering an elongated briquettespecimen.

The specimens are pulled to aspecified distance at a specifiedspeed and at a specifiedtemperature. This is useful in confirming that amaterial has been added to theasphalt to provide a significantelastomeric characteristic.

    Tensile Properties - Force-Ductilometer Method- DDA 3(automatic)Elongation:

    ASTM D 113 - AASHTO T 51 - JIS K2207DIN 52 013 (IP 32, NF T 66-006)

    Force-Ductility:

    EN 13589 - IP 520EN 13703 - IP 515 - AASHTO T 300

    Elastic Recovery:

    ASTM D 6084EN 13398 (DIN V 52 021-1)- IP 516(ASTM D 5892 - ASTM P 226)

With the ductility machines of the DDA 3 seriesthe afore mentioned procedures can be performedautomatically. Except for recovery tests, 3 tests canbe performed simultaneously.

The drive is microprocessor controlled and usesa stepping motor and a feed rod. Both are locatedoutside the tempering bath and therefore are notaffected by corroding influences of the bath liquid. The tempering bath itself is double-walled with anouter water circulation system. The tractor cradle is made of stainless steel as wellas the bath walls.

If extremely thin threads are measured, the built-incirculation pump for the inner bath can be switchedoff.

A very even and exact temperature can be obtainedin the bath by the connection of a good coolantcirculator and due to several temperature probes plusthe transparent bath cover.

Traction speed, elongation and pauses can be pre-set on the control unit.During the whole test run the tensile force on eachline is permanently measured. The maximum tensileforce may be up to 300 Newtons per line.

With the DDA 3 a minimum tensile force margincan be set. When a bitumen briquette ruptures andthe tensile falls below this setting, the pertinentelongation will be stored and the machine will bestopped automatically after all three briquettes havebroken.

There is a special program for recovery tests ofpolymer-modified bitumen. The bitumen briquette will be expanded to a pre-setelongation, then the tractor (after a pause) returns toa position where no more stress is in the material, equivalent to the cut-up state of the specimen. If due to any recovery of the material a tension shouldoccur, the tractor will move until there is a stress-freecondition again.

The control unit is equipped with two RS232interface. This allows to connect a serial printer anda PC to record all test parameters, the final valueson each test line as well as peaks with their pertinentelongation.

Further, the DDA 3 has analog output sockets so thatforce/elongation curves can be drawn.

The ductility meters are also available as DD 3 in abasic version without force measurement. These models have a digital indication of theelongation only.

Replacing analog line recorder or serial data-printer, allows to control the DDA by PC, the data-transfer to MSEXCEL or LIMS and simplifies the download of firmware-upgrades.

The sample status of up to 3 samples will be displayed simultaneously, indicating the traction distance or forRecovery-tests the percentage of relief and the total energy.

Significant points like the local minimum, maximum, turn-points of in- & decreasing flanks and tangent-pointscan be determined automatically and displayed as diagram or chart.

The numerical display of force or distance for a single point on the curve is possible, too.

Individual diagram areas can be increased, curves can be hidden orindicated numerically.

Since every sample will be saved under an individual filename, it ispossible to compare 3 samples of different tests with each other.

The evaluated data can be exported as ASCII-files. They includeinformation like the sample name, file name, user ID, date & time, duration, program, speed, temperature at start & end, status anddistance & force.

Printing of numerical or graphic evaluations, including relevant pointlike maxima and fracture are possible on a usual printer.

    Summary of Method

Penetration is the resistancewhich a material under specifiedconditions of test providesagainst being pierced by aspecifically shaped penetrator.

Beside the configuration ofthe penetrator used, primeimportance attaches to suchfactors of temperature, time andload of test as are specified bythe different standard methods

of test.A sample is filled in a specifiedcontainer and conditioned in atemperature bath. Then a standardized penetratoris vertically dropped on thespecimen to measure thepenetration depth.

Higher values of penetrationindicate softer consistency.

The PNR 21 is a compact but highly flexible texture analyzer, that demonstrates the forces, which occur whenthe properly chosen test body is pushed into the tested material or withdrawn.

Especially due to its easy and convenient handling the apparatus allows a quick and economical examinationof the plastic & elastic properties of pasty materials.

PNR 21 Rheotex uses different test bodies. It depends on the measurement problem, whether a needle, acone, a cylindrical or platelike ram is applied. These test bodies are mounted to a support-arm with forcesensor which is attached to a vertically movable carriage.

The load or tensile forces, which affect the force sensor, when the carriage moves up or down are indicatedon a computer screen as a force/displacement diagramor as a displacement/time function.

The instrument permits to monitor curingand congealing reactions of adhesives, mortars etc. or to observe the behaviourof sealing matter and cements.

The creation of test programs is veryeasy.

Either made directly on the instrumentor by using PNRCon software and a PCwith Windows.

The use of a computer does notonly enable a much easier and moreextensive creation of test procedures, but also allows their storage andreloading.

Scope of ApplicationUsed to measure load forcesas well as tensile stresses, which occur when a test body ispushed into the tested material

    or withdrawn.

Suitable for bituminousmaterials, hot-applied pavementsealants & fillers and cement.

    Summary of Method

A texture analyzer measuresthe forces, which occur when atest body is pushed with a pre-programmed speed into thetested material or pulled out.

The forces affecting the testbody are measured andindicated in the form of adisplacement/force curve or

as aforce/time functionThis allows to determineinformation about the aging, thematurity or the curing, as wellas the estimated subsequentprocessing of a sample.

    BPA 5 Bending Mechanism

    Breaking-Point - FRAASS Method- BPA 5 (automatic)

    Bitumen and bituminous binders:

    IP 80 - EN 12593 (DIN 52 012, NF T 66-026)- JIS K 2265

Easy to OperateDue to its principle of construction measuring the bending force of a steel plaque coated with the materialto be examined and the use of thermoelectric elements for the cooling of the test chamber, the AutomaticBreaking-Point Tester BPA 5offers a series of outstanding advantages.

The handling of the BPA 5 is very easy. The operator only needs to place the specimen on the plaque suppor tand the BPA 5 automatically clamps and adjusts the test plaque.

The large LC-display, visible up to 10 m distance, provides the operator with additional instructions during atest. When a test is completed, the final result remains on the display until a new measurement is started.

VersatilityThe scope not only covers the examination of bitumenaccording to the conventional FRAASS Method butalso allows the user to adapt the test procedure toparticular condit ions (e.g. research of glass transitiontemperatures) or to perform a permanent bendingprogram.

With the Standardized-FRAASS-Test-Methodthe instrument detects a distinct variation of thebending force or a typical deformation of the force/temperature curve respectively. Just as if the BPA 5user could look inside the material under test.

These striking force characteristics can even berecognized with difficult materials (such as certainkinds of bitumen), where ruptures of the bitumencoating cannot be observed visually.

In particular with Polymer-modified Bitumen (PmB),the Permanent-Bending-Programis an interestingalternative to the conventional FRAASS method. Thesample is cooled to a specified temperature and thenthe number of bending strokes is counted which arenecessary to cause a rupture.

This program, however, requires a PC with BPACon-software to remote-control the BPA 5, for storageand evaluation of the measured data. Thus, testproceedings (e.g. variation of the bending force) canbe easily watched via a graphic diagram on the PCscreen.

For samples with a very low breaking-point aRapid-Test-Program is included. It cools with anaccelerated rate of 2 K/min in the beginning and thenchanges to the standardized cooling rate during theactual test period.

In order to avoid unnecessary tests, withsamples where the breaking-point is not knownat all, the SEARCH-Mode, which is preset inthe USER program, can be used beneficially. The instrument works with a refrigeration rate of

2 K/min and makes a bending test every 2 Kelvin.

The BPA 5 also offers the possibility to changetest parameters like bending speed, cooling rateor bending intervals and to store them as a USER-Defined-Program.

Scope of ApplicationTo determine the temperatureat which a bitumen tends tobreak rather than to flow whenstressed.

Suitable for any homogeneousroad or industrial bitumen.

    Summary of Method

A thin flat steel plaque, coatedwith the sample, is flexedunder specified conditionsat a descending series oftemperatures.

The FRAASS-Breaking-Pointis the temperature at whichthe first cracks appear in thecoating.

BPACon-SoftwareMost comfortable is the use of the BPA 5 together with aPC with BPACon-software. This software package (forWindows) includes the Permanent-Bending-program.Further it permits to remote control the BPA 5 by PC,to create additional user-defined test programs and tostore or reload them from a PC. The measured data canbe easily saved and evaluated on a PC in numerical formand as well as a graphical diagram.

BPACon is, for instance, mandatory to run Permanent-Bending-Tests or when Glass-Transition-Temperatures are determined, where the trend of the bending force versus the temperature drops and therecovery trend serves as the criteria for the material under test.

EconomicalThe BPA 5 is a very economical instrument. It uses Peltier-elements for the refrigeration of the testchamber. These solid-state cooling elements require a light auxiliary refrigerant only and thus avoid investingin a bulky and high energy consuming cooler.

During testing, a constant load(0 to 450 g) is applied to aasphalt beam for a selectedduration. The deflection of the beamis measured and monitoredcontinuously by PC.Further the test parametersare set by the PC, whichdisplays & prints a plot ofload vs. deflection andcalculates the stiffness at thelowest temperature anticipated.

For tests acc. ASTM D 6648an auxiliary cooler is requiredto cool down the molds, so thatthe sample is stiff enough to bedemolded without distortion.

A range of research-grade software is available to enable the following tests:

Oscillationas a function of time, temperature, frequency and shear stress Viscosityas a function of shear rate, shear stress, temperature and time

Creep andCreep Recovery(for compliance measurement and analysis) including accumulated strain testing.

    Time Temperature Superpositionand Viscoelastic Analysis

Scope of ApplicationUsed to measure theviscoelastic properties ofmodified or unmodified (agedor unaged) asphalt binders in

    a temperature range of +5 to+80 C.

    Summary of Method

For AASHTO MP1 tests a sampledisc is confined between circularparallel plates and tested at aspecific temperature.Dynamic shear is determinedby applying a known torque tooscillate one of the plates andmeasuring the resulting strain.

The phase angle, in radiants ordegrees between the sinusoidalstress & strain, is measured, too.Resultant stress is measuredin a strain control mode, whileresultant strain in a stress controlmode.

The measurement of the rheo-logical properties, or viscoelasticbehavior, of binder, like range anddegree of stiffness, elasticity, andrelaxation times measured overthe working temperatures, helpsto improve the performance life ofasphalt road systems.

Rheometers measure the rheo-logical data concerning the flowand the deformation behavior ofsubstances by:

    - Rotational testsfor liquids:

Flow curves (shear stress andshear rate), viscosity function, yield point, thixotropy (structuraldecomposition and regeneration),temperature behavior.

    - Oscillatory tests

for low viscous liquids to solids:

Viscoelastic behavioras an amplitude sweep as a function

of the deformation or load (or shearstress); as a frequency sweepas a function of time (speed orfrequency)

    Time-dependent behavior(thixotropy, structural decompositionand regeneration)

    Temperature-dependent behavior(glass-transition-temperature,melting-temperature,crystallization-temperature)

    Jellification andhardening behavior

    - Creep and relaxation tests

to investigate the viscoelasticbehavior and material structure

    (e.g. molar mass distribution) ofpolymers
