An old dog can teach a person new tricks…Patience; Don’t sweat the small stuff; Age is really only a number; and be Thankful for every chance of joy you get.

Irene, my scrappy terrier mix, has been teaching me and my other two pooches a lot about life and love, since she first came into our lives in April of this year.

Irene was in rough shape… ear infections, bad skin, smelly and apparently spent much of her past having puppies. When I saw this old, scruffy “Fraggle Rock” looking dog in one of the cages at the Rochester Animal Shelter where I volunteer, I opened the cage. I sat on the floor with her and she licked my face. She looks like my dog Charlie, my first rescue 17 years ago. Charlie and she could have been twins…

Same color, same gray highlights, both old…both—abandoned.

Unfortunately, Irene’s age and health problems took her off the adoption floor and onto another floor no dog wants to find himself…

But thanks to my volunteer buddies at Rochester Animal Shelter, they told me if I wanted her, I better come adopt ASAP. Now it would be a no brainer except for the fact that I have two other success stories from Rochester Animal Shelter, Fiona and CeCe, young dogs with lots

of energy, who aren’t fond of sharing their space or their mother. But I couldn’t get Irene out of my mind. My Mom, who is 85, still has a lot of life left to live, even as she battles dementia. The two possess the same spirit. So I decided to adopt the scrappy 15 year old terrier mix, find another home for her, and my other dogs would have to deal with it for a while.

Well, that was more than seven months ago… Irene has found a permanent home… mine. The 15 year old is really about 11-years old. A little bit of medicine, bathing and TLC have made this girl into a beauty queen. My two dogs have dealt with it, and actually they all pal around together. Irene loves going for car rides, running, yes running in the park, guarding the window at my house and visiting my mom in memory care. Now if she could teach the rest of the crew to clean the house.

P’looza: What prompted you to start up a house call veterinary service?

Dr. Marion: Honestly, I never planned on starting my own business, but while working in a small animal veterinary clin-ic I noticed patients daily that did poorly in the typical clinic setting. I’d see older arthritic dogs slipping on the floors, or cats frozen in fear or trying to run away or attack anyone simply trying to hold them. Many pets, anxious to be in a new place full of strange smells and noises, just seemed uncomfortable. I knew there had to be a better way to provide quality veterinary care for these pets, loved and cared for by their pet parents. Over time, as I witnessed a growing need, I decided to start a house call veterinary service. Hence, Doorbell Vet was born.

P’looza: Does Doorbell Vet have a main goal? Dr. Marion: Yes, our primary goal is to provide quality and compassionate care in the comfort of your home.

P’looza: Who is your typical client?

Dr. Marion: Well, our clients are quite diverse, but they all share the same need or desire for low stress and convenient veterinary care. Our clients range from those that have trouble getting to a clinic, i.e. people who have had a recent surgery or hospitalization, elderly clients, pet owners who lack reliable transportation,

Petpalooza thoroughly enjoyed talking with Dr. Dori Marion last month, learning more about her ever growing veterinarian service known as the Doorbell Vet.

or merely people with busy and hectic schedules. Some-times people who have children or multiple pets find it dif-ficult to bring everyone to the vet. In addition, pets that are anxious due to car rides or become nervous in a veterinary office benefit greatly from our in home care. Also, many older pets appreciate the fact they are able to remain in their familiar and comfortable surroundings.

P’looza: I understand your practice is expanding and you’re adding on an associate. Is that correct?

Dr. Marion: Yes, we are very excited to have added Dr. Kulow to the staff at Doorbell Vet this past March. Dr. Allie Kulow has a great deal of experience in private practice having been practicing in Rochester since 1996 and espe-cially in the field of behavior. In addition to her regular house call visits, Dr. Kulow also offers in-home behavioral

consultations.

P’looza: What’s the most challeng-ing aspect of your work?

Dr. Marion: I see a lot of pets for in-home euthanasia, which is very chal-lenging emotionally for a pet lover like myself. The pets are often very ill and the owners are un-derstandablly very upset, but I think that this is one of the

most important services that we provide. We give the op-portunity for a beloved pet’s final moments to be at home in a peaceful setting surrounded by their loving family.

P’looza: What would you say is the most rewarding?

Dr. Marion: It’s very rewarding to know that we’re developing strong bonds with pets and their families by giving lots of personalized attention and having the abil-ity to interact with them in their own homes. One of the most gratifying services I feel we provide is hospice care for pets with terminal conditions. We are able to help these pets continue to have a good and comfortable quality of life with their families for as long as possible.

P’looza: In what ways can Doorbell Vet help owner’s take better care of their pets’ health?

Dr. Marion: I see many pets that haven’t been to a veterinarian in years because the stress of getting to a physical clinic is such a deterrent. Being able to come to the home allows these owners to have the veterinary guidance they have been lacking to help keep these pets healthy and comfortable.

P’looza: Do you have any stories you’d like to share?

Dr. Marion: I do have several patients that have certain things that make them feel more at ease during the visit. Some dogs have a favorite toy, and one cat in particular likes to be brushed just prior to his exam, but my most memorable encounter was with an anxious dog who felt most comfortable on his trampoline. He jumped up onto it and proceeded to bounce on it all by himself. While it had been a long time since I had been on a trampoline, I was more than happy to make his trampoline my tempo-rary exam room so he would be more at ease.

P’looza: That is one house call to remember! What would you like our readers to remember about Doorbell Vet?

Dr. Marion: Many people are surprised by how many services can be provided in the home setting. While we do not perform sedation, emergency care or surgery we can diagnose many ailments, manage a lot of chronic diseases and urgent care problems in addition to complete wellness care, hospice care and in-home euthanasia. So, remember if your pet is in need of veterinary care, we make it easy. Simply call: 500-5993 ... then listen for your doorbell.

Dr. Allie Kulow & friends.

Dr. Dori Marion visits with one of her happy patients.

Little Darling, it’s been a long cold lonely winter … and for many… a hungry one. Not just for humans, but for their pets as well.

Many local pet owners face the daily dilemma of how to feed their pet. They

may have fallen upon hard times, or maybe they just need some short-term assistance with their pet. They love their pet and the last thing they want to do is give them up.

Where can a pet owner turn to if they are barely able to feed their beloved animal? For many, they will go without so their pet may eat. Currently, there is no governmental food stamp program for pets, and those using food stamps cannot use it to buy pet food.

In comes Meals for Mutts, a NYS Non-Profit in Rochester run by a core of three volunteers, trying to help out local dog and cat owners in need. The purpose of Meals for Mutts Inc., is to provide healthy, nu-tritious meals to companion animals whose owners have fallen on hard times and are not able to provide for them. Meals for Mutts began about three years ago as a conversation among some volunteers with Pitty Love, a local dog rescue.

Chrissie Cody-LaBorde founded Meals for Mutts as a response to the need she saw among local pet owners. “I reached out to Matt Piccone, of PAWS, Providing Animal Welfare Services. As part of PAWS outreach, they would provide dog food to clients in their program,” said LaBorde. “But with all the other services PAWS provide, they found it just wasn’t sustainable anymore. “

So Meals for Mutts took over and now provides food to PAWS clients, as well as those referred to them from local rescues Pitty Love and Going to the Dogs, as well as social workers. In addition to LaBorde, the group has two other directors, De-nise Knapp and Sarah Battistella.

“We have an application on our web site that anyone can fill out, regard-less of income.” “We also provide for those temporary down on their luck or just need a onetime dona-tion.” LaBorde said. “We are hoping to make an impact that by provid-ing food to animals in need, we help reduce the number of animals being turned into at shelters or rescues. “ she said.

Currently, Meals for Mutts serves 25 recipients, many with multiple dogs. Since January 1, the organization has provided 3,000 pounds of dog food to the community. This includes com-munity drop off and foster services.

They also provide puppy kits to local rescue groups and fosters.

Meals for Mutts is going through a transition period. Previously, the organization was making house calls to area pet owners household and dropping off food on a regular basis. This mode of distribution though, was not as efficient or streamlined as the organization would like. Meals for Mutts have begun a more efficient system to reach its clients. Meals for Mutts is currently looking for two centralized distribution cen-ters on bus routes so pet owners can partake in getting food for their animals twice a month.

Meals for Mutts has a network of local pet stores who donate food to their inventory. “We like to provide a healthier brand of dog and cat food to our clients.” With the healthier brands the dogs tend to eat less and the food has a better nutritional value than other store brands.” LaBorde said. Both Pet Supplies Plus locations in Fairport and Penfield are currently doing a donation drive.

In addition, Meals for Mutts works with local businesses as drop off locations. These include:

Atlantic Auto Body, 860 W. Ridge Road, where the general manager matches all donations.

Nick’s Auto Repair, 4268 Rte. 64, Canandaigua,

Smiley’s Auto Repair, 2228 Ridge Road

North Eastern Pool and Spa, 101 Ontario St. East Rochester

Rhino’s Pizza, 86 Donavan St. Webster

“We welcome more businesses, so any one that might be interested in helping out, so please contact us,” LaBorde said.

Meals for Mutts can be contacted at 585-208 ext. 0313, or visit the website at: www.MealsforMuttsInc.com

Q. When’s my bird gonna be ready to come home? Why isn’t it weaned yet?

A. Every bird weans at its own pace, we can give you a general idea

BIRD BANTERwith Paul Lewis Owner, Birds Unlimited

Located in Webster, NY

of when it might be ready but its not up to me.

If someone were to ask your parents when you would be walking, talking and not poopin’ in diapers any longer they could only give an approximate time frame when all this would happen.

Before my birds go home they must not only be eating on their own, (and not just eating one or two things) but drinking, and climbing around the cage with coordination.

We also like to see birds socialize with other birds much the same way parents unload their kids at a day care at an early age. They need to know how to be a bird.

I’ve had cockatoos wean at 13 weeks I’ve had them wean at 24 weeks. Macaws are usually between 16 and 20 weeks, some have been longer. Smaller birds tend to wean a bit earlier. So please be patient, I’ll send them home when they’re ready.

Pet Lover’s Tip # 26Bribery vs. RewardThe idea of using treats to train is often equated with bribery. Truthfully, dogs do what works. If using treats gets them to do what you want, then why not? You can also use the world around you as a re-inforcement. Every interaction you have

with your dog is a learning opportunity, so when you think about it, you probably don’t use food very often except during active training sessions. So why does your dog continue to hang out? Because you reinforce him with praise, touch, games and walks. Just remember, the behavior should produce the treat; the treat should not produce the behavior.

Q: How does a dog exercise?

A: By going to the dog gym to work out of course!

Dogs need both mental and physical exercise to stay fit and healthy. Dogs need to engage in activities such as running, jumping, climbing and confidence building in order to stay fit both physically and mentally.

Learning how to move on, around and through agility obstacles is a great way to work their muscles and mind. Dog treadmill training is a perfect way to get in their daily walks when weather conditions aren’t optimal or leash manners are lacking.

Roc City K9, LLC is a great place to bring your dog to work out on the agility equip-ment, treadmills, tread wheels and use the indoor walking track.

After a good work out give your dog a good scrub in the self wash area or book an ap-pointment with our groomer. And, if your dog needs to challenge their mind they can take classes with our certified trainers.
