Corporations and governments are doing it. Now it’s time for people to do it to their homes. Right-sizing is not a euphemism for downsizing, but rather a process for making your home fit the way you live.

Many of us are residing in the past while living in the present.

• Do you really use your living room?• Is your dining room a walk-through space

on the way to elsewhere? • Do you really need space to work at

home?• How many miles do you walk in your

kitchen to fix a festive meal?

I urge you to come clean about how you really use your home. For example, a foyer is a superfluous space when the main entry is through the mud room or garage. Similarly, the oversized great room of the 1990s – which morphed from separate rooms for eating, entertaining and preparing food – doesn’t work for every family. Gathering areas must incorporate many functions today: TV viewing, eating,

homework, reading or game playing. The dining room that gets used three times a year should be repurposed. It makes a great home office space and you can use the dining table for sorting papers, which you probably do for your taxes anyway. And for many of us, one home office may simply not be enough anymore in this economy. Right-sizing should enable you to live efficiently, flexibly, sustainably and best of all, comfortably.

My new book is not a decorating book. It will lead you into re-thinking your daily life inside your home. Suddenly, you will be analyzing how a room is used today, not a generation ago. There are how-to worksheets to assess personal living style. Discover checklists, tradeoffs and dimensions information, money-saving and time-saving advice as well as an extensive resource list. You’ll even find a source list on where to donate furniture and furnishings.

The most important tool to right-sizing is an attitude re-adjustment. Having an open mind and willingness to rethink and reinvent space will almost certainly bring big rewards as you discover space you never knew you had. Don’t focus on resale. That was so yesterday. Right-sizing is the solution for today.

Besides the usual wine and cheese, we put a few unique touches on our salon menu including specialty martinis and light bites appropriate for the season.

If you’ve always wanted a pool but think you don’t have the space, think again. Designed specifically for modest sized yards, dip pools, splash pools or

cocktail pools can cost between $25,000-$30,000 and create the perfect right-sized oasis. Toni Spagnoli of Florida Lifestyle Pools offers up these considerations:

Things you must consider• Setback requirements

are different for every neighborhood and depend on where you live and your lot classification.

• Overhead power lines may restrict the amount of space that you have to build but most lines can be either moved or buried.

• Building codes require that you build a number of feet away from another structure.

More bang for your buck• Adding a sun shelf or

benches can cost more but are worth it when building in a small area with less options for traditional seating.

• Deep pools are unnecessary. Most small pools are for lounging, not diving.

• Splurge on the interior finish. Most pebble interiors come with lifetime warranties and are available in a large selection of custom colors.

• Consider making your dip pool a spa too by adding therapy jets and a heater.

Go green• A variable speed pump

will be your biggest long-term money saver. This is the latest in pool pump technology which can significantly cut down on the monthly costs!

• A salt chlorination system is likely the biggest time saver. Salt sanitization requires less upkeep and no harsh chlorine.

A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING. It seems obvious, but so many don’t do it. Every cabinet and drawer in your kitchen should have a definite, singular purpose so that every item has a place to be put away. Use labeled shelves if necessary so everyone in the family knows what goes where, no excuses!

TAKE INVENTORY. Collect utensils, pots, cups, Tupperware, dishes and appliances and group like items together to locate duplicates. Then decide if you can live without three can openers, an excessive amount of coffee mugs, or if you can give away or store that extra set of dishes you never use.

if you get it out—put it away.if you open it—close it.if you finish it—replace it.if it’s full—empty it.if it’s dirty—wash it.if it’s garbage—throw it away.

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS ‘SAVING FOR LATER.’ This is the principal notion behind a kitchen purge. Be realistic about single-use appliances like fondue pots, bread makers, waffle irons and pizza stones. These things take up a huge amount of cabinet space and you should only keep a single task item if you use it frequently.

Equally, St. Petersburg’s large number of alternate street routes and mild climate help classify the city as “scooter-friendly.”

Just ask Chris Densmore, owner of Scooter Escapes, who practices what he preaches by driving his own scooter to and from work, every day.

“Our motto is ‘we ride what we sell, and we sell what we ride’,” says Densmore.

Pricing for brand new scooters start at around $1,000 and the Wall Street Journal recently reported that the average price to insure a scooter is only $300 a year. That,

combined with fuel efficiency (most average 85 mpg to well over 100 mpg) makes scooters a wise low-cost alternative to hefty car and gas payments.

From a purely environment-friendly standpoint, the Toronto Motor Club says a car driven 10,000 miles a year produces, on average, 9,700 pounds of CO2 while the average scooter produces only 2,770 pounds of CO2.

As Densmore sees it, “I can, and will, do everything I need to do on a scooter. We don’t need more highways or suburban sprawl.”

WHETHER YOU ARE TRYING TO SAVE MONEY OR MOTHER EARTH, SCOOTERS ARE A pRACTICAL AND VERSATILE SOLUTION fOR URbAN LIVING

florida DMV facts:

• If {the scooter is} 50cc or less, these vehicles are not motorcycles by driver license law definition, fS 322.01 (25), so a motorcycle endorsement is not needed per f.S. 322.03(4). However, to operate them on streets and roadways, you must be at least 16 years old and hold at least a regular operator (Class E) or “Motorcycle Only” driver license.

• Operating a scooter requires the proper equipment including brake lights, headlight, mirror etc. per S. 316 f.S., and tag, title and registration.
