  • TECHNICAL FEATURES

    1. Design features

The new balances essentially retain the weighing system of The PC1616, PC16 and PC24, while the electronic

system is that of the new PE Series (P E160. .PE6000[PE6). The description of the weighing principle(ME-701754) thells you all there is to know about these balances.

Features compared to the PC1616, PC16 ad PC24:

    - Weighing system: New design of scanner and temperature sensor.

    - Balance P/C board: New design. Many new functions. Operating parameters are stored i a EAROM.

    - Data interfaces: New design of Option(s) with specific Mettle. connecticm sockets (2 x 15-pole). Without .Option t the accessory connections will not functicm.

    - ~ Better appearance and adaption of the back wall to the new data interface.

For the FE HD, BULLETIN ME-701706 must also be taken into account

    2. Operating functions

    (Stand-alone) for the Ser

    2.1. Standby circuit

The single control bar is used to switch the balance o or off; if the power cable is connected, the electronic

    system is always under power,

    2.2. Auto zero

The auto zero function satisfies the calibration (certification) requirements stipulated by PTB/HB44 (OIMLguidelines ape not final at this time). The function is limited to a $mall band width. When the display isswitched on, the balance measures the Current zero position (dead weight). As so. as a load is placed on theweighing pan (weight > auto zero band width), the auto zero feature is no longer operational, even if thedisplay is reset to zero by taring.

    2.3. Semiautomatic calibration

The calibration functian c?, be triggered with the single control bar. To do this, a specified calibration

weight must be placed cm the pm. This weight depends m the operating mode. The calibration factor is

stored in the EAROM and cannot be lost. However, when the bar code is read in, this factor is cancel led.

In certified balances, the calibvatim functim can be blocked by setting a short-circuit plug on sT4 (balanceP/C board).

METTLER PE11/12/16/22/24, FE HO, FE HD-2

  • TECHNICAL FEATURES

    2.4. Unit of weight display

The user can configure the balance to display weight in any of the following units without additional peri-

    pheral devices: g / kg / oz / tl / lb / dwt / ox / ct.

(This does not apply to units that are not appropriate for particular balance models).

Weight values can also be converted from any one of these units into any other unit by using one of the

GE305 applications. In certified balances, the (co version function can be blocked (same as in 2.3. ); in thiscase, the conversion feature only allows the conversion between two units which must have been configured

in the balance or in the GE305.

2,5. Stability detector and Delta Display

The functions are always in operation (except for the PE12, PE24 ad FE HD).The stability detector works with three band widths. :

    - The balance is stable (ring symbol underneath sign goes out).- The balance is not stable during weighing (ring symbol is o).

The balance is. not stable during weighing-i (ring symbol is on, last decimal place (Delta Display) is bla -ked out). Please note: DeltaDisplay orIly applies to PE1l and PE16.

If the balance is Ot stable, the data output (data 1/0 socket) is blocked in the ,,Send on transfer operatingmode

    2.6. Integration time

The integration time is variable, but canmt be adjusted rnaually. It is adjusted automatically, depending cmthe prevailing conditions.

    3. Specific Accessories

The accessories a~e e.y important, because they let the use, expand the range of applications of the ba-

    Iace.

    3.1. Option 016 (data interface ~ unidirectional)

Function of the two 15-pole sockets:

The CL and the RS232C data outputs are combined in .me socket, therefore there is o switching back andforth Two coding switches make it possible to select the transfer mode (send on transfer/send continuous)and the transfer rate (300/2400 Baud).

    3.6. GE53 Overhead Oisplay

Designed for use with overhead projectors. {t is suitable for all transparency projectors, but not for thosewhich work with episcopic light (incidental light). Cable .Omecto?s are shaped like branch connectors. Thismakes it possible to attach additional connections.

    3.7. GE54 Output Module

A Part Of the DataPac applicatim packagemotor). A repair/exchange is anticipated in

    3.8. Calibration weights

It is used to control varIo.s additional functions (e.g. , adjustingcase of defect.

Appropriate weights are available for calibrating in the standard mode for all models

    4. Balance P/C board

The model parameters, which are generally stored i a single-chip processor (ROM), are placed here in anon-volatile memory (E AROM). This standardizes the balance P/c board ?md the microprocessor (except for aspecific reference resistor R (separate P/C board) ad a Calibration-adjusting resistor R, as well as variousmanners of plugging in the ST5) ad thus makes it identical for the entire serie of models.

1 addition, the automated function check of the P/C board requires that the P/C board which is to be tested

must already be equipped with a microprocessor. For these reasons, the microprocessor is an integral part ofthe balance P/C board in this series of models. Thus, the following applies for serice:

Balance P/C boards, both ew parts or those supplied in repair/exchange, are equipped at the Mettler fac-

tory with a microprocessor (EAROM is not loaded),- The microprocessor must not be removed from p/C boards which have bee sent to Mert[er for repair/ex-

    change.

ME TTLER PEll/12/16/22/24, FE HO, FE HO-2

  • TECHNICAL FEATURES

If the balance P/C is defective, it is intended to replace it ystematically in the .epai r/exchange program.

For the purpose of Quality Assurance, Mettler reserves the right to refuse P/C boards that have been sent in

under the repair/exchange program, if these have been mishandled.

For this reason, the serice documents in Register C O,Troubleshooting contain no reference or hints on this

    level

    5. The 3 operating modes

    - Normal mode for not-certified balances

    - Certification mode for certified / yet to be certified balances

(Eichnmde)- Test mode for certain service operations. Features:

    . Calibration with full load

    . No aUtO Ze,O

. PE1l and PE16 balances display the double indicated value ~ double resolution

(PE12, PE24 and FE HD ten times the indicated value g ten times the resolution)

The difference between normal mode ad Certification mode is simply the calibration weight. In the normal

mode, ,t is set to a practical due, while i the certification mode it is set according to Certification

    standards.

  • TECHNICAL FEATURES

    6. Loadinq or writinq over the EAROM

The lC4 EAROM stores the model parameters of ~ operating mode, including the weight required for calibra-

tion , as well as the calibration factor. The parameters are read in by mea~ of a ME-73592 code reader set.

There are three types of bar codes, one for each operating mode. A bar code consists of a block of 9 symbols

    (O. .8), which should be read in oma after the other. The three blocks for each balance model constitute abar code table. These tables are identical on the front ad on the back, in case o. of the codes is damaged.

The ME-73592 code reader set consists of:

    - An ME-73593 service P/C board, which is a data output with a special processor.

A Hewlett-Packard HE DS-3050 bar code reader with a Mettler 15-pOle connector which makes it possible to

establish a Connection with the P/C board.

The code reader set is requived i order to:

Load the EAROM after the balance P/C board has been exchangednw!nt P/C board is not loaded). I f the code reader set is defectivetive P/C board and plug it into the replacement or exchange P/C

    data to be transferred.

the EAROM of the exchange or replace-

Disconnect EAROM IC4 from the de fee-

,oard. This will cause a\\ the mcess.ary

    - Change the operating mode, for example, in the case of a repair which requires the test mode.

How to se the code reader set:

    - With the power cable disconnected, disconnect the application P/C board (if installed) and replace it withthe service P/C baord. Connect it to the 15-pole socket (GE socket) of the code reader. Reconnect thepower cable, tare and wait for zero display.

When entering the code, leave the bar code table in its plastic cover

(to protect the code).- Hold the code reader like a thick pencil, inclined by about 15 with

    respect to the vertical line.

    - set the code reader down on the edge of the white paper to the

left of the code line ad run it in quick, even strokes over the code

lines, beginning with the line O (zero).

When the O line is read in, a model designation appears i the display, for example, PE24 (in the test modePE24t; in the certificaticm mode PE24E,,). starting with line 1 appears SLINE,( and the number of the sIie that is to be read in. (If this number does not change to the next higher umber after a ii. is read in,the indicated ii.. must be entered once again: Reading Error. ) After Iit! 8, the Sign *OFF, lights up. Now[are and balance will display zero. The balance is now ready m operate in the selected mode.

METTLER PE1l/12/16/22/24, FE HD, FE HO-2

  • TECHNICAL FEATURES

When a code is read in, the following always applies:

The calibration factor (i.e. , a correction factor that is automatically determined d.rin9 calibration betweenthe natural sensitivity of the balance and the correct weight indication) is set to equal z. This meansthat the previous calibration is lost and that the balance ~ again be calibrated. This must be done with

a calibration weight prescribed for the type of operating mode that is now read in.

The unit of weight display is automatically configured to a metric unit of weight. If the weighing is to be

done i a diffemmt unit, this unit must again be selected (according to the Operating Instructions).

In some case, the word ERROR may appear in the balance display, i.e. :

If the EAROM is not loaded (for example, after the P/C board has been replaced) or if the EAROM is de-fective.

    - [f rhe code reader is defective.

Before changing a balance P/C board because a defect is suspected, You should always read in the desired

code! Because, if a service P/C board is defective, it can always be repaired under the Mettler repai. /ex -

change program. But, if the code reader is defective, o service i. offered by Hewlett-Packard (HP).

You will get reliable performance from your code reader, if you follow these simple care instructions:

    - Keep tip ad small hole in tip of instrument clean.

    - Unscrew tip periodically ad clean glass window of diode.

    - Periodically check tip for wear ad tear. Replacement tips are available from Hewlett-Packard dealers under

    the number HE DS-3001.

The improvements made in design and production have led to a simplified parts concept. The following guide-

    lines apply to this concept:

    - (t must be possible to repair the balance regardless of the defect- Replacement of a single part is chagig to replacement of the cornpoent group which contains the defec-

    tive part.

    - Single parts/component groups, which are affected in most cases where a Weighing cell is defective, remain

    available as before,

    - Inexpensive single parts which will remain replacement parts, will be offered in sets containing a specifiednumber of pieces,

    - Cornpoets of P/C boards are not sinqle parts ( E-parts). P/c boards, whose replacen?emt under the repair/exchamge program is ot justified because of their low cost, are replaced as entire units if they are defec-tive.

    - There are no replacement parts for inexpensive accessories; they are replaced as entire units.

Possible repairs for accessories ca be seen in the ,,Accessoriesna lists.

Accessories for which ma replacement parts/groups are listed, are replaced a~ entire units when there is a

    defect.

  • D3 2. PREPARATIONS D3

    2.1. Work station; tools

The heart of every measuring cell is a strong magnetic system whose alr gap is the cause of a stray field in

which the compensation coil must be able to move freely. This stray field is capable of attracting magnetizable

particles and floating matter within a certain distance and guiding them to the air gap. [t is hOPeless to re -Pair a bala..e . . a table where such Particles have settled. Therefore, the following aPPlies as a matter ofcourse:

Before beginning your work, clean your work station with,. a sufficiently large arealf away from your work station, remove dust before opening the balance.

    0. not leave open balances unprotected for longer periods of time; cover with paper.

Keep tools ad tool bag clean.

    2.2. Service position of balance P/c boa?d

If encessary, the balance P/C board can be rnoed bak slightly

    to make work easier.

Important reminder: Do not work with loose P/C boards, since

ground connection i. no longer assured {nthis case.

    Disconnecting the power cable

Unscrew fastening screws of the balance P/c baord,

Position balance P/C board (14) o opposite holes.Attach screws and geav wheels.

When rnoig the balance P/C board back to its original posi-

4.1. Repla. inq the par! sup port, assembled (3)

When replacing a pan support, axsembled, the following is to be noted:

If the replacement affects a PE24 or a FE HD, the draw (tension) spring supplied with the pan supporlshould be hooked on parallel with one of the two built-in standard draw springs (using the spring [ens Ionhook from the Mettler tool bag).Reason: The larger weighing range requires a higher resistance until the overload protection feature be-

    comes effective.

The extra draw (tension) spring must not be isntalled in the PE1l, PE12 and PE16, because the overloadprotection function would not be triggered at the right moment.

    1 ) Measure R59 AB ad AC of the defective P/C board ad divide ~c , = ratio 1 .39.

    2) Adjust Ieplacernet P/C board R58 in such a mannev that ~ is as close as possible r. the ratio 1.39

Because of manufacturing tolerances, this is not possible with the same res. istace values as in case 1 ):If in case 2) we set AB also to 10.7 kfl. AC become,, for example, 7.2 kfl, thus (he ratio ~ = 1.486,i, too large.

If we now reduce A8 to, let u, say, 10,5 kfl, AC becomes 7,5 k(l, and the ratio is reduced to 1,40. Thisis sufficient for our propose.

    1,39 = 1.007. This corresponds TO an error of < 1%. A factor of 2% is admissible.

    3) and 4) Adjust R58 in such a manner that a ratio of 0.766 is created. This is the case in the example withDE = 5.2 kfl and DF = 6,8 kfl.

This will cause the comma to also shine through under the decimal point (i certain countries this 1s a re-quirement, partly for certified balances only).

    5.1.4. Voltage +25 v/+ 35V

At the factory, short circuit plug 5T5 is xet to the 1 2 position (+25 V).For the PE24 and FE HD, this setting must be changed to the 2 - 3 position (+35 v). (Please observe theinscription on the balance P/C board. )

    5.1.5. Preadjusting the calibration

FOF safety reasons, the semiautomatic calibration procedure is structured in such a manner that only small

    calibration errors can be corrected.

    - The weight indication of the uncalibrated balance is accurate to 2 %,

If for same reason a weight indication is not within this tolerance, the tolerance can be reduced with an addi-

    tional adjusting resistor R. ..:

    - Tare; slightly raise weighing pa (several digits); gently let pa slide back into position; read display.A correctly prepared balance will indicate a difference of O to 1 digit (in the test mode). If not, checkfor touhing and brushing.

    b) Check for mechanical jamming (flexible bearings):- Place full load i center of weighing pan and tare; move load to rear edge of weighing pa; read res.lt;

move load to front edge of weighing pa; read and compare res..lts

If there is a symmetrical deviation, i.e. , an approwmately equal amount of digits towards plus or minus

starting from zero, we are only dealing with a corner load errov which will be discussed in the next .hap -ter. But if the deviation towards plus 0? mi. s is clea?ly .neve, this indicates a rnecha ical jamming ordamage in the weighing system. PE16: Special Fastmode bar code table for faster weighing-in

Fastmode without DeltaDisplay CL-45845Certified Fastmode without DeltaDisplay CL-45846

    Background

Our experiences on the market have show that the PE16 precision balance does notalways satisfy customer expectations as far as weighing-in is concerned. We havetherefore developed a new bar code for this balance. With the new parameters thatare read in with this new bar code, weighing-in is even faster than before. At thesame time, Delta Display is switched off, i.e. , the last digit of the display is alwaysvisible.

When should the parameters of the special bar code table be read into the balance

Only if the customer specifically asks for a faster weighing-in balance. This means:Do not try to increase the number of balances having faster weighing-in characteris-tics. Reason: Compared to standard balances, these models are much more sensitiveto vibrations.

Preconditions for entering the new bar code into such a balance

At the present time, only ME-47734 microprocessors are built into these balances. In order to read in the bar code, the original ME-47734 microprocessor must be re-placed with an ME-47455 microprocessor. Starting in October 1984, the new ME-47455microprocessors will also be built into PE16 balances. The bar code can be read intothese balances immediately, without first replacing the microprocessor. Just followthe instructions given in the PEI1 . .PE24 Service Manual.

Registering balances with faster weighing-in characteristics

Service technicians are advised to personally register those balances where theparameters of the special bar code table have been read in

  • 2. Replacing the guides

There is a new description for replacing the guidesprocedure as it is carried out in the field).

Replace Page D5 in Section D of the Service Manual.

    3. Reading in using the bar code reader

    (5) (16) (adapted to fit the

When reading in using the bar code reader, things are arranged so that after thefirst line has been read in, each time a new line is read in correctly, the displayimmediately changes to the next higher line to be read in.

Then the following should be noted:After the last line has been read in, a pause of approx. 3. ..5 seconds must elapseOnly then does the display go out and change to OFF (this applies particularlyto the FE HD and FE HD-2, because with these scales, the procedure is differentwhen the last line is read in).

Note: If this pause is not maintained and the last line is read in a second time (onthe assumption that the line was not accepted by scale), the entire read-inprocedure must be repeated after the control bar has been pressed (when this isdone, Line 1 appears in the display).

Recommendation: Make a note of this in the chapter entitled, TECHNICAL OVER-VIEW. Point 6.

    4. Voltages

The description in which the secondary voltages are to be measured on connectorbar, STI, is not clear (confusing).

Replace Page C51 in Section C of the Service Manual (see enclosures)

    5. Seals (in the FE HD and FE HD-2)Both models conform to IP65 Protection specifications, i. e., rustproof{ andprotected against sprayed water (as per IEC Publication 529).

    Remarks regarding Service work:

When carrying out works steps on the display housing (4), make sure no sealsare damaged.. Strips (19) lengthwise, front and rear, between the base of the display hou-

sing (7) and the display housing (4).. Seal (19) for the cable opening from the base of the display housing (7) to

the display holder (8).When replacing the tare key (1) and the program keypad (3), always make surethat the contact surface is clean. When replacing the front glass (2), the the edge of the glass must be coatedwith Gurisil all around (i. e., there may not be any gaps so that water can getin). The cable seal (19) on the back wall of the housing base (11) must always beinstalled properly. All screws must be carefully tightened.

Replace the Exploded View Drawing in Section A of the Service Manual (see en-closures).

  • 6. Drainage

To assure that water will drain out of the scale, and to assure that any calciumdeposits etc. will be prevented from forming between the ribs of the cast housingand the steel housing, there is a space of more than 4 mm between the cast hou-sing and the steel housing (housing base (11 )).

Procedure for scales with a clogged-drain:

Drill two holes (max. dia. 8 mm) in the bottom of the steel housing (housing base(11)).

Note: The exact position of the holes to be drilled should be decided on bylooking for the stains left by the standing water. A space of at least 20 mmbetween the holes and the outside edge of the steel housing should be maintainedin every case!

    7. Lateral guidance of the platform supp ort (in the FE HD and FE HD-2)Even with a slight lateral hit on the weighing platform (18), the platform support(17) can be knocked out of position.

Procedure:To improve lateral guidance of the pan support inspecial pan support (with longer edge on the fourboth these models.

    Note !

The new Order No. for the platform support (17) for45907/V instead of 48905.The Order No. for the platform support (3) for all other models is still 48905.

the FE HD and FE HD-2, afeet) has been designed for

the FE HD and FE HD-2:

Replace the Parts List in Section A of the Service Manual (see enclosures).

    8. Corrosion on the P/C board (in the FE HD and FE HD-2)No soldering work should be carried out on the P/C board because colophoniumresidues (especially on the solder side) oxidize and can therefore cause short-circuits. If soldering work is necessary, the solder spots must be carefully cleanedwhen finished.
