NPH-PERU - APRIL ACTIVITIES APRIL 30 th , 2006 HOMES At this moment, we are renting two homes, one for the girls and one for the boys and both houses have additional space for new arrivals. The girls’ home does not need lots of maintenance repairs as does the boys’ home for it is a well kept house in terms of construction. Ever since we moved into the boys’ new home, we have had to make lots of maintenance repairs mainly on the bathrooms in the entire house as well as further electrical repairs in the kitchen and the bathroom of the employees. In addition, we had to get our new certificate of Civil Defense which recognizes that the home is safe and suitable for the living conditions of the children of NPH. We were also told by these same authorities to place one more fire extinguisher on the first floor which we have done. The Water Reservoir that we installed at the beginning of March has been more than enough to cover for the shortage of water that we were having the first days of February and March. CHILDREN During this month two new girls joined our family. Their names are Mayra who is thirteen years old and Judith who is eleven years old. Mayra was placed into our care by the Family Judge from the Province of San Marcos and Milagros came through the Demuna to us since she was suffering physical, psychological and verbal abuse from the family she was living with. Mayra was living in the same circumstances, though at the time of her custody, she was found sleeping on the streets. Both of them were also abandoned by their biological parents. We have seen that the two girls have adapted quickly into the NPH environment and do not have any behavior problems as do the majority of the children once they arrived to NPH. HEALTH DEPARMENT/SERVICES We have accomplished a lot in this segment for we have placed all our children under the Peruvian Health System called SIS (Sistema Integral de Salud) which is free for all children between the ages of 0-18, after a lot of paperwork. Only two children have not been able to get these benefits due to the fact that they do not have any papers (birth certificates). Enrollment in this health system guarantees our children free medication, consults and the vaccines that are required. In the next few days, all our children will be vaccinated for yellow fever, due to the fact that Cajamarca has been prioritized by the local health authorities as a high risk region for this disease. We have also started to use the services of a new clinic, Clinic Padre Luis Tezza, which is run by nuns; their prices are much cheaper than the previous clinic where our children

were previously treated. As a matter of fact, our two new arrivals in this month have gone through their medical check-ups there and that is where Milagros was diagnosed with a kidney infection; she is receiving further treatment there. In coordination with the donation from GlaxoSmithKline, our vaccines will be delivered to this clinic since they have the proper refrigeration and a doctor needs to receive them personally for the storage. The doctor will determine which vaccines are most needed by the children. CHILDREN´S SCHOOL ACTIVITIES During this month, all of the girls got excellent grades in their first test. The boys have not yet written any exams. Two of our boys were named by the Director of the School they are attending to act as Brigadiers since they have an excellent conduct and are very responsible (Miguel Angel and Franklin). We have completed purchasing most of the materials that all teachers have asked our children. All the children are doing more than what we asked from them. We hope that they continue taking advantage of this opportunity. NEW NPH PROPERTY IN CAÑETE It is a delight to let you know that thanks to our ECC friends and their selfless sacrifice, NPH-Peru finally has its land where the future orphanage will be located. This property is located much closer to Lima than our current location. It is a blessing that after a long search we found the right place for all the children. The children and all the staff want to thank very sincerely our friends from the ECC for their constant support towards the life of our children who will benefit the most with this gift. SPONSORSHIP DEPARTMENT At this moment, the majority of our children have sponsors. The new arrivals since January of this year are not yet placed for sponsors since we are awaiting their final decision from the family judges and fiscals. The children seem very happy to receive pictures of their new godparents and appreciate the fact that they now have more godparents in addition to the many tíos/as they have at home. RELIGIOUS Twenty seven of our children started attending catechism classes on Sundays for two hours in the same parish where we are attending mass every Sunday. They are preparing themselves for their first communion, confirmation and baptisms too. This is all for the moment since we are preparing for our second visitors day, which will be held during the first weekend of May. Thank you all and God bless you all. Sincerely, Alfredo Hernandez
