Personalia Robert Bernasconi (born 1950) is Moss Professor of Philosophy at Memphis State University. He is the author of The Question of Language in Reidegger' s Ristory of Being and of a recently completed manuscript The Art of Existing: Reidegger in Question, as weIl as of a number of essays on various aspects of continental philosophy and the history of social thought. He is currently completing a book called Between Levinas and Derrida. He edited a collection of Gadamer's essays entitled The Relevance of the Beautiful and Other Essays. With David Wood he edited Time and Metaphysics, Derrida and Difference and The Provocation of Levinas, and with Simon Critchley he edited Re-Reading Levinas. Before coming to Memphis, Robert Bernasconi taught at the University of Essex for 13 years. Remo Bodei (born 1938), holds the chair in history of philosophy at Pisa University, and teaches at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. His scien- tific interests were initially focused on German classical philosophy, on the culture of the "Goethe-Zeit" and on utopian thought of the Twentieth Century. In the last decade he focused his research on the theory and history of individuality and of passions. Apart from various articles, translations and editions of philosophical texts, he published the books Sistema ed epoca in Regel (Bologna, 1975), Regel e Weber. Robert Bernasconi (born 1950) is Moss Professor of Philosophy at Memphis State University. He is the author of The Question of Language in Reidegger' s Ristory of Being and of a recently completed manuscript The Art of Existing: Reidegger in Question, as weIl as of a number of essays on various aspects of continental philosophy and the history of social thought. Jacques Colette (born 1929) is professor of philosophy at the University of Paris-I (Pantheon-Sorbonne). He is a member of the Centre de Recherches Phenomenologiques et Hermeneutiques, the Husserl Archives in Paris (CNRS). He translated into French works of Schelling, Kierkegaard and Husserl, and published initially on authors who worked in the margins of the great systems (Lessing, Jacobi, Hamann, Solger, Hölderlin, Kierkegaard); among others: Kierkegaard. La difficulte d'etre chretien (1964), Histoire et Absolu (1972), Les ecrits de Hamann, Introduction, Traduction et Notes (1981). He has also published numerous articles on twentieth century pheno­menology and existential philosophy in Germany and France.

Jean-Fram;ois Courtine (born 1946) is professor of philosophy at the University of Paris-X / Ecole Normale Superieure. He is Director of the Husserl Archives in Paris (Centre de Recherches Phenomenologiques et Hermeneutiques). He translated into French works of Schelling, Husserl and Heidegger. Among bis other publications are: Suarez et le systeme de la metaphysique (1990), L'Extase de la raison. Essais sur Schelling (1990), Heidegger et la phenomenologie (1990) and L'Invention de ['analogie. Aristote et les commentateurs grecs de la metaphysique (paris, 1992).

Theodore de Boer (born 1932) studied classical philology, theology and pbilosophy in Amsterdam and Louvain. He was professor of philosophy successively at the University of Utrecht, the University of Amsterdam, and is at present at the Free University in Amsterdam. Urbain Dhondt (born 1930) is professor at the Catholic University of Louvain. He obtained this Ph.D. in philosophy at the Catholic University of Louvain with a dissertation on Aristotle's ontology. He was president of the Institute of Philosophy of Louvain from 1975 until 1991. He teaches on the theory of naturallaw, ethics and pbilosophy of religion.

Louis Dupre (born 1925 in Belgium) obtained his doctorate in philosophy at

the University of Louvain with a dissertation on 'The Starting-Point of Marx's Philosophy'. He taught first at Georgetown University and for the last twenty years he has been the T. Lawranson Riggs Professor in the Philosophy of Religion at Yale University. He is the author of ten books, among them The Other Dimension (1972, 1979; translated into six languages), Marx's Social Critique ofCulture (1983), Passage to Modernity (forthcoming, 1993).

Klaus Düsing (born 1940) was professor of philosophy in Bochum and Siegen, and at present in Cologne where he is also Director of the Husserl Archives. Among his publications are: Die Teleologie in Kants Weltbegriff (1986 2), Das Problem der Subjektivität in Hegels Logik (19842), Hegel und die Geschichte der Philosophie (1983), Schellings und Hegels erste absolute Metaphysik (1801/1802) (1988), and several articles and reviews. Together with H. Kimmerle he edited: G. W. F. Hegel, Gesammelte Werke Vol. 6 (1975).

Jean Greisch (born 1942) is professor of philosophy and chairman of the philosophy department of the Institut Catholique in Paris. He is a member of the Centre de Recherches Phenomenologiques et Hermeneutiques, the Husserl Archives in Paris (CNRS). He translated into French: Hans Jonas' Das Prinzip Verantwortung (Le Principe Responsabilite, 1990) and Wilhelm Schapp, In Geschichten verstrickt (Empetres dans des histoires 1992). He published Hermeneutique et Grammatologie (1977), L'age her­meneutique de la Raison (1985), La Parole Heureuse ou Martin Heidegger entre les Choses et les Mots (1986); in cooperation with R. Kearney he edited: Paul Ricoeur: les metamorphoses de la raison hermeneutique (1991). He is Director of the Collection 'Philosophie' of the Editions Beauchesne. He will shortly publish an introduction to the work of Paul Ricoeur (Le Cogito blesse), and L'etre, l'autre, tetranger. L'hermeneutique dans la meta­physique.

Samuel IJsseling (born 1932), studied theology in Rome and philosophy in Louvain, Freiburg i. Br. and Paris. In 1964 he obtained his doctorate at the Institute of Philosophy in Louvain with a dissertation on Heidegger under the direction of A. De Waelhens. Since 1969 he has been professor at the same institute, where he teaches history of modern and contemporary philosophy and philosophy of language. Since 1974 he has also been Director of the Husserl-Archives. He has published various books and articles focusing primarilyon Heidegger, Derrida, contemporary French thought, rhetoric and the philosophy of language.

Gwendoline Jarczyk (born 1927) is both philosopher and journalist. She teaches at the College International de Philosophie and at the Centre Sevres (Paris). She is a member of the Internationale Hegel-Vereinigung. Her main publications are: Systeme et Liberte dans la Logique de Hegel (Aubier, 1980)

and Eloge des Libertes (DDB, 1991). In co operation with P.-J. Labarriere she published a new French edition of Hegel's Wissenschaft der Logik (Science de la Logique Aubier, 3 vols. 1972, 1976, 1981), several other translations of and commentaries on Hegel's texts, and a collection of essays under the title Hegeliana (PUF, 1986). They are also due to publish a new translation of the Phänomenologie des Geistes (Gallimard).

Joseph J. Kockelmans (born 1923; PhD., Angelico, Rome, 1951; post­doctoral studies in mathematics, physics, and phenomenology from 1951 to 1962) is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Office for the Promotion of Interdisciplinary Studies at The Pennsylvania State University. He is member of the New York Academy of Science and Past­President of the American Philosophical Association, Eastern Division. He is co-editor of the Dutch Heidegger Library, the Purdue Series in the History of Philosophy, and the journal Man and Warld. In addition to articles in journals he has published several books on the philosophy of science, on interdisciplinary and higher education, and on the philosophies of Husserl and Heidegger.

Pierre-Jean Labarriere s.j. (born 1931) is professor of philosophy at the Centre Sevres and Director of the College International de Philosophie (Paris). He is a member of the Internationale Hegel- Vereinigung. His main publications are: Structures et mouvement dialectique dans la Phenomeno­logie de l'Esprit de Hege! (Aubier, 1968, 1988), Introduction ci une lecture de la Phenomenologie de l'Esprit de Hegel (Aubier, 1979, 1987), L'unite plurielle. Eloge (Aubier, 1975), Le discours de l'alterite (PUF, 1983), L 'Utopie logique (Harmattan, 1992). In cooperation with Gwendoline Jarczyk he published a new French edition of Hegel's Wissenschaft der Logik (Science de la Logique, Aubier, 3 vols. 1972, 1976, 1981), several other translations of and commentaries on Hegel's texts, and a collection of essays under the title Hegeliana (PUF, 1986). Emmanuel Levinas (born 1905) studied philosophy in Strasbourg and Freiburg i.Br. He was professor of philosophy, successively in Poitiers, Paris­Nanterre and Paris-Sorbonne. He translated Husserl's Cartesianische Medita­tionen into French and presented the phenomenology of Husserl and Heidegger to the French public in his: En decouvrant l'existence avec Husserl et Heidegger (1949). He published on Jewish religious culture (Difficile liberte, 1963), and several talmudic studies (1968, 1977, 1982). He devel­oped his own philosophical ideas in, among others: Totalite et Infini. Essai sur l'exteriorite (Phaenomenologica 8, 1961), Autrement qu'etre ou au-deM de l'essence (Phaenomenologica 54, 1974), and in a great number of articles, many of which were collected in: Humanisme de l'autre homme (Mont-

Alphonso Lingis (born 1933) is professor of philosophy at The Pennsylvania State University, and has translated the last and posthumously published book of Mauriee Merleau-Ponty: The Visible and the Invisible (Evanston, 1968), and several works of E. Levinas, among which Totality and Injinity (The Hague, 1979), Otherwise than Being or Beyond Essence (The Hague, 1981) and Collected Philosophical Papers (Phaenomenologica 100, The Hague, 1987). He has published on reeent Freneh philosophy and on phenomenology, among other things: Libido (1985), Phenomenological Explanations (Phaenomenologica 96; The Hague, 1986), Excesses. Eros and Culture (New York, 1983), Deathbound Subjectivity (Bloomington, 1989).

Giuliano Marini (born 1932), is professor of politieal philosophy at the Faeulty of Politieal Scienees of the University of Pisa. He has studied the philosophy of Dilthey, and subsequently the movement which Dilthey himself gave the name "the historical school" (including the writers Gustav Hugo, Savigny and Jacob Grimm). Subsequently he dealt with the political philoso­phy of Hegel; now he is studying the political philosophy of Kant. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the reviews "11 pensiero politico" and "Archivio di Storia della Cultura".

Among his works are: Dilthey e la comprensione dei mondo umano (Milano, 1965); Savignye il metodo della scienza giuridica (Milano, 1966); L 'opera di Gustav Hugo nella crisi dei giusnaturalismo tedesco (Milano, 1969); Dilthey e il giovane Hegel (in the collective volume Incidenza di Hegel, Napoli, 1970); Jacob Grimm (Napoli, 1972); Dilthey jilosofo della musica (Napoli, 1973); Liberta soggettiva e liberta oggettiva nella 'Filosojia del diritto' hegeliana (Napoli, 1978, second edition 1990); Friedrich Carl von Savigny (Napoli, 1978); Storicita dei diritto e dignita dell'uomo (Napoli, 1987). He was editor of the volume La polemica sulla codijicazione, which includes writings of Thibaut and Savigny (Napoli, 1982, third edition 1992). He translated the Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts of Hegel (Bari, 1987, third edition 1991).

Jean-Luc Marion (born 1946) studied philosophy at the Ecole Normale Superieure and is professor of philosophy at the University of Paris X Nanterre. He has translated into French and wrote a commentary on Deseartes'Regulae ad directionem Ingenii (La Haye, 1977). He has pu­blished books on the philosophy of Deseartes: Sur l' ontologie grise de Descartes (Paris, 1975, 198F), Sur la theologie blanche de Descartes (Paris, 1981, ed. eorrigee 1991), Sur le prisme metaphysique de Descartes (Paris, 1986) and several studies on phenomenology and metaphysics: L'idole et la

Otto Pöggeler (born 1928) obtained his doctoral degree in Germanic Studies at the University of Bonn in 1955; his dissertation focused on 'Hegels Kritik der Romantik'. In 1966, he obtained his qualification in philosophy at Heidelberg. Otto Pöggeler is professor of philosophy at the University of Bochum and Director of the University's Hegel archives since 1968. In 1977 he became a fuIl member of the 'Rheinisch-Westfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften'. A bibliography of his articles and books can be found in Philosophie und Poesie (Festschrift O. Pöggeler, 1988), Vol. 2, ed. Annemarie Gethmann-Siefert (Stuttgart, Frommann-Holzboog, 1988, pp. 351-374). William Richardson (born 1920) is a psychoanalyst and professor of phi­losophy at Boston College. He has published on Heidegger's philosophy, Heidegger: Through Phenomenology to Thought (The Hague, 1963, 19743)

and on topics in social and moral philosophy. Together with lohn P. MuIler he has edited a collection of studies on recent French philosophy, The Purloined Poe: Lacan, Derrida & Psychoanalytic Reading (Baitimore, 1988).

Paul Ricoeur (born 1913) studied philosophy in Rennes and was professor of philosophy successively in Strasbourg, Paris-Sorbonne, Paris-Nanterre and Chicago. He has translated Husserl's Ideen into French and published several studies on existential philosophy and on Husserl's phenomenology. His own hermeneutical approach has gained worldwide reception by spe­cialists in philosophy as weIl as in the humanities. Among his many publica­tions are: Philosophiede la volonte (2 volumes: 1950 and 1960), De ['interpretation. Essai sur Freud (1965), La metaphore vive (1975), Temps et Recit (3 volumes: 1975, 1983, 1984) and Soi-meme comme un autre (Paris, 1990). A number of his numerous essays and articles are collected in: Histoire et Virite (1955 e.v.), Le conflit des interpretations (1969), Du texte ci {'action (1986).

John Sallis (born 1937) is W. Alton lones Professor of Philosophy at Vanderbilt University, Nashville. Among his many books are Being and

Michael Theunissen (born 1932) was professor of philosophy in Bern and Heidelberg, and is at present at the Free University in Berlin. Cornelis Verhoeven (born 1928) is professor of philosophy at the University of Amsterdam.
