This Personal Care Homes Directory is provided by Saskatoon Health Region in response to the expressed need for information about individual personal care homes and has been compiled from information provided by the individual personal care home operators and The Department of Health. Licensing and regulation of personal care homes are the direct responsibility of the Department of Health, Government of Saskatchewan. Saskatoon Health Region expresses no opinion on quality of accommodation and services provided by the listed personal care homes.

PERSONAL CARE HOMES DIRECTORY

This information is distributed by Saskatoon Health Region (SHR) in cooperation with the Department of Health and the Personal Care Homes Association to help you select a Personal Care Home (PCH). A list of licensed Personal Care Homes in the Saskatoon area and a brief description, provided by the PCH operator, is included in the directory. Personal Care Homes have been encouraged to develop a brochure outlining the additional services offered in their home. Be sure to ask for this brochure when you visit the homes. Before you begin your search you will likely have some questions about Personal Care Homes. What is a licensed PCH and what services can I expect from them? • A Personal Care Home is a private business that provides accommodation, meals and

supervision or assistance with personal care to adults in a residential, family-like atmosphere. They are one of the options for long-term care worth considering. Many homes do accept residents for a respite stay. Personal Care Homes are not to be confused with Special Care Homes (“nursing homes”).

• Personal Care Homes are licensed by Saskatchewan Health under the authority of The

Personal Care Home Act. All homes are inspected regularly. Licensed homes post their license in a prominent place in the home. As a minimum requirement, the homes provide 24-hour supervision, laundry, supervision of grooming, bathing, dressing and nail care, transportation arrangements, safeguarding medications and home-based social and recreational activities. In many homes the provision of specialized care can be arranged and may include such things as wound care, catheter care or injections. The procedures would be performed by either an appropriate professional or a trained caregiver.

• All licensed Personal Care Homes meet minimum standards in relation to size of bedrooms,

number of bathrooms, dining, recreation and leisure areas, and are inspected by the local fire safety official. All homes with a capacity for six or more residents are required to install an automatic fire sprinkler system.

• All staff providing care is required to have a certificate in standard First Aid. • Staff preparing or serving food is required to complete a food handling course. Meals served

are based on Canada’s Food Guide. Special diets can be accommodated in most homes. • As of March 31, 2005, all staff and licensees are required to have a 16-hour course in the

provision of personal care.

• Personal Care Homes receive no government subsidies. Fees are determined by the operator based on the amount of care the resident requires. Fees vary from home to home. The Personal Care Home Regulations state that notice is required for fee increases. Additional charges are usually made if the operator needs to purchase additional health care supplies for a specific resident.

How do I begin my search? A Personal Care Home may have a condition on the license because of the way the home is built, or if the operator and staff are unable or do not wish to provide care for persons who have particular needs. Ask the operator of the home if there is a condition on the license as this may limit the care that is available in the home. Before you begin your search, sit down with a pencil and paper and write down all of your care needs. Take this list of needs with you when you go to look at homes. Show the list to the operators of the homes you are considering. Discuss your requirements and consider how they can be met. All PCH operators must complete an admission agreement with each resident at the time of admission. This agreement defines, in detail, the care the resident requires and the cost of the care. It is important to discuss all of your care needs with the operator of the home. Both you and the caregiver of the home must be clear about what services are to be provided and the associated cost of the services. Family should receive a copy of the agreement if they are assisting with placement. Who is available to help with my search? The staff at Client/Patient Access Services (CPAS) are familiar with many of the homes and are willing to assist you by providing information. Client/Patient Access Services (CPAS) is a single-entry point for long-term and home care services delivered by the Saskatoon Health Region. The telephone number is 655-4346. Home Care staff in Rosthern, Wakaw, Humboldt and Watrous will also assist you and provide information about personal care homes in their areas. Who can provide additional information or discuss concerns? You can obtain further information in this regard by contacting one of the Personal Care Home consultants. They are responsible for licensing, monitoring and inspections. The PCH consultants can be reached at 933-5179 or 933-6163. The directory will be updated on an ongoing basis. EXPLANATION OF DIRECTORY CATEGORIES

**The Personal Care Homes are listed in alphabetical order by area.** Area - E East - NC North Central - W West - R Rural Saskatoon The Saskatoon district has been divided into areas to provide you with an indication of location of the Personal Care Homes (see map - next page). Capacity This is the maximum number of residents for which the PCH is licensed. Average Fee - A $1000.00 up to $1199/mo - B $1200.00/mo or more - C $1500.00/mo or more - D $1800.00/mo or more - E $2200.00/mo or more The fee structure for each home can vary from time to time. This indicates the average fees as of the listing date. Age Preference - E Elderly - M Middle-aged - N No preference YA Young Adult Some homes may prefer a specific age group of residents. Care Preference - C Mentally Challenged - D Dementia - M Mental Health - N No preference Indicates if the PCH prefers a particular type of resident. Gender Preference - M Male - F Female - N No preference Some homes may prefer to care for only males or females or both. Up-Night Staff - Yes - No All Personal Care Homes have 24-hour supervisory care. Night staff are generally allowed to rest between scheduled routines/checks. A home that offers up-night staff ensures there are staff members awake in the night.

This is part of the admission agreement. - P Provided - Some homes may provide transportation for their residents, usually for a fee. This fee will be in addition to the monthly charge. Some Personal Care Homes have listed both, indicating transportation is negotiable. Languages Spoken - E English - F French - G German - O Other - S Sign - U Ukrainian All Personal Care Homes are English (E) speaking. This category indicates a language in addition to English spoken in the home. Accommodate Specialized Care - Yes - No This is an indication that the PCH operator is prepared to arrange for specialized needs such as catheter care and diabetic care. Exit Alarm - Yes - No This is an indication that the home is equipped with alarm systems on the exterior doors. Smoking - Yes - No Some homes allow smoking in designated areas only. You will need to clarify this when speaking with the PCH operator. Respite - Respite care is care for a limited period of time. Homes that are willing to provide respite care will do so if / when they have a vacancy in the home. There are no designated respite beds in the personal care homes.
