Nature’s Best DadsAnimals don’t often get nominated

for father of the year, so let’s hear itfor several who should. HappyFather’s Day to:

Emperor penguins. Females needto feed and refuel after laying eggs, leaving males to incubate the eggs inthe frigid Antarctic. For two months, the penguin dads balance an egg ontheir feet, protecting it with theirbrooding pouches. After the chickshatch, the fathers feed them amilk-like substance until themothers return.

Marmosets. These tree-dwellingprimates often give birth to twins ortriplets. When the babies are a fewweeks old, the father steps in to helpraise the young—feeding, groomingand carrying them on his back.

Mourning doves. Thesemonogamous birds team up to reartheir broods. After working together tobuild a nest, Dad sits on the eggs frommorning to afternoon, then Mom takesover until dawn. Both take turnsfeeding their hatchlings.

Sea catfish. Unlike most fish, this bewhiskered father refuses toleave his offspring to fend forthemselves. In fact, he protects thefertilized eggs and the hatchlings inhis mouth for months, forgoing foodthe whole time.

Wolves. Predator mammals aren’tknown for having doting fathers, whichis why the wolf pack is a special familybond. While the she-wolf guards pupsin the den, the father—her mate forlife—hunts for the family. Later, heacts as a protective mentor.

“It is a wise fatherthat knows his own child.”

—William Shakespeare

Enjoy a Safe SummerOutdoor summer fun can

sometimes lead to injuries. Beprepared for any seasonal hazardswith the following prevention and firstaid tips.

Bee stings. A blunt-edgedobject like a credit card works best toremove a bee’s stinger. Clean thearea with soap and water, then applycortisone cream or calamine lotion. Ifa serious reaction develops, seekmedical attention.

Poison ivy or poison oak. The

plants’ oils often cause an allergicreaction, so remove the oils as soonas possible by washing the affectedarea with soap and water. If a rashdevelops, soothe skin with a bakingsoda bath. An over-the-counter oralantihistamine and topical cortisonecream can ease the itching.

Tick bites. Wear long pants andlong-sleeved shirts in tick-infestedareas; insect repellent also helps. Ifyou find a tick on your skin, remove itwith tweezers, then clean the bite andapply antiseptic. If the bite siteexpands or develops a rash within30 days, see your doctor.

Sunburn. Reduce the risk ofsunburn by staying indoors between11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and alwayswearing sunscreen. If you getsunburned, treat the pain andinflammation with cool compressesand ibuprofen. Seek medical advice ifthe sunburn is severe.

easy-to-prepare foods. Beat the heatwith these ideas for delicious sidedishes that don’t require any cooking.

Salads. Forget simple lettuce anddressing blends. Instead, considermarinating sliced heirloom tomatoesand shallots in balsamic vinegar, oliveoil and tarragon; or try a spinach andred bell pepper salad tossed withginger, soy sauce and peanut oil.

Slaws. Break away from theordinary by using radicchio, fenneland nectarines mixed with buttermilk, sour cream and vinegar. Considerjazzing up a traditional cabbage slawby adding green onions, redpeppers, apples, raisins or peanuts.

Dips and salsas. Layer creamcheese, smoked salmon, sour cream, red onions and dill weed in a pie platefor a special savory dip. Put a newspin on salsa by using chopped and

whole blueberries combined withlemon juice, cilantro, jalapenos andred bell pepper. Other salsapossibilities include mangoes, cucumbers, radishes, watermelonand peaches.

Soups. Refreshing summertimesoups that are served cold include thechunky tomato-based gazpacho andthe creamy vichyssoise. Go for theunexpected by incorporatingcucumbers, fennel, avocados, carrots, watermelon, strawberries, cherries orpineapple in your cold soupconcoctions.

The Evolution of ZoosAs spring gives way to summer,

consider planning a trip to the zoo fora chance to view the world’s mostmagnificent creatures.

Modern zoos strive to createhabitats resembling naturalenvironments, encouraging healthy, happy animals and a good learningexperience for visitors.

Today’s zoos focus on speciesconservation, and many of themoperate breeding programs that helprestore populations of endangeredanimals, such as tigers, wolvesand elephants.

The idea of collecting animals goesback far in our history.

In ancient Egypt, Greece andChina, royalty and aristocracy keptpersonal menageries of animals as asign of status and wealth. Baboons, hippopotamuses and elephants wereamong the exotic animals displayed. The practice spread to Europe asexplorers captured unusual animalsfor their monarchs’ private enjoyment.

England’s royal collection openedto the public in the 16th century, during the reign of Elizabeth I.

During Europe’s Age ofEnlightenment in the 18th century, zoos became places for scientificstudy. A large public zoo opened inParis in 1793, displaying aristocrats’menageries seized during the FrenchRevolution. Animals were kept incramped cages to showcase as manyas possible in limited space, a practicethat continued into the 20th century.
